It's not Pencil and Paper gaming, but...

Many of the reviews have carped about the linear progression, the lack of depth, and other issues that are indemnic to computer role playing games. NWN:G is a pretty good computer game, and a mediocre (out of the box) role playing game. The graphics are good, the Aurora toolset is quite easy to master (I actually was able to rebuild some pencil/paper DandD campaigns that I created in the early 80's using Aurora - what a retro-blast!), and the music is well rendered. This game, however, truly shines when the purchaser immerses themself into the on-line gaming community. There one is faced with limitless opportunity to hone their skill in a role-playing environment. NWN:G out of the box is a mediocre product if one only plays the packaged game. The numerous servers accesable through Gamespy allow one to focus on role-play, hacknslash, or a combination. Access the on-line gaming, and look for references to Nordock, to get the closest thing to Mr. Gygax's intended role playing out of this product. Just the opinions of an old pencil n' paper gamer.

I did alot of research on various RPG's because I was looking for something other than a first person shooter and found Ultima Online outdated and boring after 4 years of faithful play. I wanted an original RPG with an emphasis on action and player choices. I decided to try NWN after hearing alot from players and the reviews.

Initially when I previewed the screen shots, I wasn' impressed...but boy was I wrong! The shots did this game no justice. I found the colors and shading done very well and the environment I had to imagine playing the table top version when I was younger came to life. The storylines are intriguing and the role my character plays is valuable to a grand scenario. The music is amazing and adds a orchestral depth and feel to the game. I feel connected to my character and carry out his actions as I would in real life. The challenges are mixed with hard and easy enemies so I am never bored. The HUD is designed very well, at least for those good with the keyboard. I use a combo of the KB and mouse and find the controls easy and fluent. I do not have a superior system, P4 256 MB Ram and 64MB ATI Radeon 7500 and the game still runs well. Sometimes sluggish while in large detailed areas but still playable. I find the game to be extremely enjoyable and even tested out the Multiplayer version and found that to be fun...but I am still looking to Dungeons & Dragons online =-)

A lot of people I know have recommended this game to me, because I love computer games and play tons of other RPGs, but I have to say I was really dissapointed. I only played until I was level 13 or so, but I found the game slow and uninteresting the whole way through. First off, I'm not really a fan of the D&D rules or whatever...for some reason none of the RPGs I've played with them have really caught my interest (except Knights of the Old Republic). I can see why people like the game, but I personally don't enjoy it. It also has great modablity, which is a big plus, altough I don't think it's enough to save the game.

NWN has renewed my faith in D&D video games

I enjoyed Baldur's Gate at first, but the level limitations and controlling multiple players was a pian. Neverwinter Nights has made significant strides since then. Highly enjoyable game, there is a lot of customization to your character as he/she progresses up in level (just like playing the real game). I only wish I bought the platinum edition instead so I could get both expansion packs rather than just the one. If you like D&D and video games, this is the game to get!!

Worth the money and the time spent on it.

Delightful gameplay with a lot of challenges, sidequests, alignment baited conversations and even touches of humor. Interesting characters, creatures, spellcasting and music. I have been playing the game solid for about two weeks and I am still only in chapter 2. It has a lot of possible campaign hours and of course, the more sidequests you take on, the more experiences you will gain.

This is the first computer based RPG I have ever played, usually finding myself more of a hack 'n' slash, first person shooter type, but Neverwinter Nights has won its place in my heart as No 1 game of all time.

I was nervous purchasing the game initially because the demo crashed repeatedly, as I see happening with a lot of other potential players. While waiting for the game to arrive in my hands, I ended up having a computer crash which, at the time seemed a curse, but I see now as a blessing. I had to reinstall Windows, and not being able to find my XP Professional cd, I had to use my backup XP Home. Neverwinter arrived two days later, I installed the game and the included expansion pack and I have been playing for hours since. I have not had a single problem with errors or game loads what so ever.

I have spoken to several other people who were having identical problems as myself, and we all had one common platform. Window XP Professional.

So, if you have purchased the game, and are having crashing problems or are afraid to purchase due to word of mouth, know that there is a way around it.

I just bought this game recently in Iraq; it seems to have problems with my laptop. My laptop is an averatec, and only a couple months old; but while the graphics themselves are awesome, the text on the menus and item descriptions are so blurry as to be entirely unreadable. The game looks wonderful, and I'm really disappointed that I cannot get it to work. I hope that someone will be able to give me the advice I need to get the ball rolling. My biggest roadblock is that I can't hook my laptop to the internet to download the 72 meg patch. Help!!

This Rocks!

For some reason, this was sitting on my shelf unopened for months. I recently installed it and started to play it and realized how much fun I was missing. I loved the Dungeon Siege and Diablo games and was looking for something like those and here it was sitting on the shelf all this time. Installation took a few CDs but was fairly quick and error-free. The graphics are great, the music is appropriate and sets the mood, and the sound effects are good too. Controlling your character needs a little getting used to but its fun seeing your hero battle it out especially if you choose a "short" character like a gnome. RPG and D&D fans should delight at all the possible customizations available. I would have liked to be able to control a larger party of say 6 characters for more firepower and seeing their different abilities side by side but this is just a small quibble. Until Dungeon Siege 2 and Neverwinter Nights 2 arrive, Neverwinter Nights Gold should suffice til then. If not, I guess I'll get the expansion pack, Hordes of Underdark, too.

It's not the follow-on to BG2 that I expected. I had high expectations for a game from bioware and I was truly disappointed. Having just one character under full control, and a second barely under control, isn't as much fun.

If you are looking for a good RPG experience, then I would reccomend World of Warcraft instead. This game is fun, but is has the 'raw' feeling of an easily hackable game. This is because they include the developement package that they themselves used to create the the game. That's not only bad, though. It's also fun to create your own story and share it online with other NWN players. Great multiplayer aspect too. If this is your first RPG, choose something else.

Once was a good game but has seen its day. Still good if you cannot afford online monthly payments.
