Nothing to see here, move along

This game offers nothing new in the shooter genre. Basically takes everything you have seen before in other games and puts the same cliches in here. That might be okay if there was something to keep your interest but there is not. A very tired formula.

worst playable game

I've played some games that were pretty bad due to glitches and programming errors, but this game has no major glitches or programming errors (though a few minor ones) and is playable but just plain sucks. Please note that this review concerns the single player gameplay, as i have not had a chance nor the desire to try out the multiplayer.

Cons: The enemies are stale and for the first half of the game are nearly identical. The enemies pretty much all die in the same ridiculous way: having a spaz attack while standing upright. The enemies have wretched AI. For each of those reasons, killing aliens gets very boring early in the game. The voice acting is horrible (though, unintentionally very amusing). The cutscenes suffer from the same disease the voice acting had. The story is very weak. To be fair, many games have weak stories, but the failure was much more noticeable in this game, as it was played out in aforementioned shoddy voice acting and cutscenes. The ending is the worst/weakest i have ever experienced. I went back to a save from a few minutes before the ending *three successive times* to make sure that it really was the ending and not some turkey prize ending like what some games give when you die at the wrong time.

Pros: You can upgrade your weapons (which is really the only fun part of the game) with biomatter points you get by killing aliens (which, as i have alluded, is one of the least fun parts of the game). How one would upgrade a shotgun with biomatter left over from a dead alien is a curious matter, but i just let it go in the face of the game's other glaring issues. The weapons act like you would expect them to (which i guess is more of a par than a plus) with the minor exception that the reload time is a tad long. The level design was generally intuitive (with a few notable exceptions), but a little plain. The game is flexible as far as minimum requirements are concerned, so it works well (i'm using that term liberally) with older systems.

I paid $20 for this game, and i consider it a $20 lesson in why one should not make impulse buys of games before reading their reviews.
