Decent Game... Sort Of.

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 3 / 4

I really don't think this game is as bad as a lot of other reviewers say it is. It's basically a good game that's fun to play, with fairly decent graphics. Of course, there are some major problems. For one thing, the game routinely crashes on my computer. I can't go 15 minutes without it locking up. This doesn't make much sense because my computer meets all the right requirements, and it should work fine. Plus, it gives me weird error messages every time I try to save a game, but it still allows me to save, so I can let this slide. And not only that, but at times throughout the game, the screen will suddenly start to flash green, and I can't figure out why. But the worst problem this game caused was that it slowed down my computer immensely, so that I had to reboot every time I played the game. Because of all of these problems, it drove me to uninstall the game before I got to the ending. It's a real shame, because it's a fun game and I wanted to finish it. Oh well, perhaps another time.

Another problem is the story. I didn't find myself caring a lot about the characters (when there were characters), so I give the story a big thumbs down. The story got slightly better when you enter the Jungle World, but not much. I also wish there were more music and ambience effects, but there weren't. There were some nice ambience effects, like in the Jungle world, but not many. One last thing I didn't like was that it took a long time to move between scenes. Just walking along a corridor can take longer than it should. But, besides the major flaws and bugs, the game is fun to play. The puzzles are kind of cool, and exploring the new areas is fun. That is, if you like adventure games. If you don't like adventure games, you will loathe this game. I just wish it worked right on my computer, that's all.

Pros: Basically fun to play. Some pretty nice graphics in some areas (the Jungle World is really cool). The puzzles weren't too hard, so they weren't frustrating.

Cons: Major bugs in the game keep it from being completely enjoyable, and made me unable to finish the game. I didn't enjoy the story. Perhaps there should have been at least some harder puzzles. Hardly any music and sound effects. Pretty much no replay value. (Even though I do want to finish it someday)

Overall: 3 stars. I wanted to give this 4 stars, but the bugs and the lame story brought it down. It's worth buying only if you really like adventure games, and are willing to take a chance that it will work right on your computer.

HUH?

this is probably the worst role playing game ever made. while the graphics are somewhat, i stress somewhat, satisfying, the game play is awful. the "puzzles" are so simple that my ferret solved most of them for me while i was off doing some thing a bit more entertainig, like stabbing my self in the eye with a sharp object. aside from the "puzzles" there were no hints what so ever on what to do next. you wander around aimlessly untill you finally stumble across the smallest little thing. at least in other role playing games, even the bad ones, there is some sort of central thought pattern and things to find that lead you along your way, this is just a lot of aggravating wandering. then when you finally figure out that you should've ducked in the alcove to the left and gone back to the place you were befor that you did every thing at and so on and so forth, the ending is far less then satifying... no battle no thought behind it, no follow up on how you saved your race of cowering humanoids...NOTHING, just a cheap lil 3 line text something to the effect of " you won." with the credits rolling over it. and it has no replay value what so ever. i would not buy or play this game for free at that, while dream catcher does have other good games, this is definately not one of them..

Crash City

Despite reconfiguring my computer more times than I can count I could never get this game to play for more than a minute without crashing and giving my entire PC some sort of seizure. Contact with Dreamcatcher elicited a polite but never-ending stream of things that must be wrong, settings that had to be changed, shutting down EVERY running program (including Intellimouse). Good GOD, Why would you put out a game that requires a user to COMPLETELY RESET their computer just to be able to play it! Yes, it's cheap--but that doesn't mean you should buy it. Twenty bucks for a game that doesn't work is still twenty bucks gone. Capsule Review: Beware!

Yuck

Save your money and go get a root canal. I do believe it would be more fun. The only reason I gave it any stars is that you have to, otherwise I think it rates, say, a swift toss in the garbage. I had to turn up the brightness to its maximum setting just to see the lousy graphics. Of course then the colors were all washed out. The puzzels are few and far between. When you do find them, they are extremly easy. When you win, all that pops up is a screen telling you that you won. I kind of like a little more imagination than that, in my games. Also I tend to like games that take a while and tax me. I started this one at about 9am on a Sunday and wrote this when I finished at 2pm. No, I did not just sit there and play either, I managed to clean my apartment also. Like I said at the begining, save your money or buy a different game!!!

Get it straight.

For all you people who have played Myst and Riven you cannot compair this or any other game to them, because they are in a league of their own. Never-the-less this game would be a great introduction game to more complex games like Riven. I suggest that if this game did'nt meet your expectations, but you liked the graphics and the puzzles, try Myst. Then go on to Riven and you will not be disapointed at all, and if you are then games like this are not for you. There are some things about this game that could be better, like when you are walking the lighting is fine, but when you stop it gets dark. That is all I have found so far that I don't like about this game.

Disappointing

Well, on the plus side, the scenes were beautifully drawn. However, MINIMAL story line, puzzles that were not mentally challenging, but rather tedious, and no character interaction (you don't even get to see yourself- not even your hands!), it also had a horrible interface (saving is a rather long process)... I give this game a big thumbs down. I was actually annoyed when it finished because I had wasted my time (I got the walkthrough pretty early on, just to get it over with!) This is probably the worst game that I have ever finished. (The graphics were pretty enough to at least run through once, and I kept hoping it would get a little interesting!) Save yourself the annoyance and get The Longest Journey!

Some Good, Some Bad

Generally, I love this type of game... I had some fun with this one, but, honestly, there was much to be desired. Here's the deal:

The storyline was very compelling. Unfortunately, I had gotten about two thirds of the way through the game when I realized how interesting the concept was, especially combined with some smooth, detail-filled graphics. That meant that there was not enough left to really enjoy. The game is so short that, by the time I got into it, it was over. Bummer.

I was a bit annoyed that I felt I had to use a walkthrough for this one. I got tired of slowly wandering through the game, hoping I would stumble across the clues I needed to find my direction, trying to exact a plan to get the bad guy. Why did I feel like that? Ultimately, the use of logic alone cannot be used to figure this one out. The many of the puzzles, but, especially the end, I felt as though they were contrived out of chance alone, like a good book that suprises you with an ending that is "just not right" for the storyline, or incongruent with other elements of plot.

So, all in all, the game is nice and entertaining, but I was pretty disappointed at a premature ending.

A below par Game

The Crystal Key is an interesting game. You goto this other world to "look" for other beings; you are supposed to save earth. There are VERY little interactions with other creatures in this game. You move quite slow and don't have hardly a clue of what to look for to progress to the next areas. I found the game to be very dark in some areas (play at night for best results). However, it did have good graphics. They get blurred when you move, but most of the graphics are very beautiful when you stand still looking for something to do. I agree with most other reviewers on this game, it is just below gaming standards. I resulted to a walk-through for the last puzzle(s), this put the game below 3 stars because it did not keep me interested enough in the game to keep playing until I beat it. Nonetheless, I finally did and I must say I was not real happy with the ending. (Hint: Try dying RIGHT AT the end to get a more involved ending.) Bottom line: This game is quite boring and tedious but worth the money. Look for this game only after you have others to resort to.

You're Not a Player, Just a Watcher

The player has no choices in where to go or what to pick up. You mainly just wander around looking for the cursor to change so you'll know where to go next. Then you get to ride there on a video. There is no logic to the puzzles, and no way to identify what you are looking at. There are no clues to point you in the right direction, just changing cursors. I got tired of wandering around and resorted to a walkthrough just to get it over with. Even then, the game makes no sense. There were repeated crashes, error messages, and reboots.
A complete waste of money - and a good thing it was not very much money.

Short and dark

I'm not that experienced with adventure/puzzle games, but I do know what I like. I like to be able to see. Maybe it's my eyes or the fact that I play games on a laptop, but this game seemed particularly dark to me. I couldn't find several items except by the "braille" method.

However, it's nice to have the puzzles related to the storyline and not just thrust in front of you because a puzzle seems needed ("I need to use the restroom." "I'm sorry, but you'll have to solve this crossword first.").

The story seemed a bit short. I confess to using a cheat or two, but I don't think doing that sped up the time that much.
