Between Quake 2 and Quake 3, better settle with Quake 2 or go pick up Unreal Tournament. This game is just too boring and slow. I think it has something to do with the OpenGL engine or maybe the designers at ID software just got tired of revising a tired old game. Maybe they shoudve changed the name of the game to something else. Action is slow. Weapons are just too boring to use. It has no alternate fire still. Sound is the same old monoaural type clunky thumping sound. Interface is still a pain. Just setting up a server requires you to open your .cfg files and .bat files and type lines and lines of code unlike Unreal Tournament where everything is there at a punch of a button. Maps require no strategy primarily because they all look alike. The CTF maps are bad. I mean really terrible. Bots are just too dumb to play with. This game will wear you down in 2 hours. Forget this game. Go pick up Unreal Tournament.

Quake3? UT

This is just a souped up Quake1. I for one don't know how ID makes a living selling the same game so many times. It has cool graphics, but the gameplay is very subpar. Compared to it's competitor, Unreal Tournament, Quake3 is miles behind. I was looking forward to q3 since q2, but when I finally got the first "test" I was very disappointed. I heard of Unreal Tournament and downloaded the demo, and now I am addicted. If it's demo with only 6 levels can get me so hooked, imagine what... well you get the idea. Unreal Tournament CLEARLY outdoes Quake3.

All in All, I don't see what the big fuss was about. Don't get me wrong, Q3 is a great game, but i think Half-Life beats it hands down with TFC and CS. Q3 IS just a souped up version of Q2, and Quake can get really old after weeks of playing. :P And on a final note, I just couldn't get into Q3 as much as I did Q2 because the levels weren't as real. It was too "cartoonish".

Alright game, but Should have been Better...

Quake 3, the game that millions were waiting for. It took quite a long time, longer then expected, and in the end it didnt end up like some were hoping it to be. The game itself has excellent graphics and is ok in Multiplayer.

I, myself, like stories in games. The other 2 had an actual story line, but in the third addition to this series, it did not. Hence the name, Quake3: Arena. The whole singe player is just arena playing. I may have liked it more if it had some sort of story line.

The multiplayer option is alright, but not as well done as Unreal Tournament. UT has much more advantages. You don't have to listen to me, but I think that Unreal Tournament is a better buy at the moment.

id, be ashamed.

In 1996 a game was made - Quake. It blew the minds of all 3d-shooter fans (including me) with splendid graphics and addictive gameplay. In 1997 a game was made - Quake2. A brilliant sequel to Quake, it was better than its predecessor in all ways. In 1999 a game was made - Quake3. It had brilliant graphics and boring gameplay. In fact, it was a letdown. This is the brief history of the Quake series. Sad, but a fact - the third game turned out to be worse than the previous two. I very much looked forward to the day when this game would come out. I bought it. I installed it. I ran the quake3.exe file. And in front of my amazed eyes the following strange picture occured: A big marine with a big gun was rapidly decreasing the number of the filthy aliens in front of him. Why weren't the aliens responding to the fire, and most importantly what was all this about - no one cared to explain. Then, the marine ran out of ammo and the filthy aliens seemed to have awakened and started shooting at him. The marine ran towards them and disappeared. Where did he go? Did he die? No one cared to explain me. This is the deep and intriguing plot of Quake3:Arena. HalfLife should just suck. Then I pressed the words SINGLE PLAYER, pressed OK several times and started fighting a bot (Crash) who was so unreasonably stupid, that at first I couldn't believe i was playing on "Nightmare". It was a really cute picture - a slowly moving bot walking around with a shotgun and waiting to be killed - so VERY interesting... The levels are good. The architecture is good. The skins are good. Everything is good (except for the AI ant the storyline), but it could have been better. I liked the curves used in the game. The graphics are splendid, but Unreal Tournament looks and feels much better. I'm sorry to admit it, because I'm a big fan of Q1 and Q2, but the third part of the series is a complete letdown!

Great Graphics and Fast Game Play

Overall, I am dissapointed by Quake3. However, there are now many modificatinos (Mods) available that make it a far more interesting game when playing over the internet. Plus, a new mission pack will be released in Nov. 2000 that will add new maps, weapons and features. I still prefer Unreal Tournament to Q3. But if your looking for some great graphics and really fast game play (assuming your computer can handle it), then I strongly recommend this title be added to any serious "first person shooter's" library.

The graphics are okay at times. But even on a 500mhz computer it can run slow. I wouldn't recommend buying this game unless you have at LEAST a 300mhz. There are many levels to choose from. The game can get a little frustrating. It's hard. I'd recommend half life if you like shooting though. But besides slow play it's an alright game.

Great game, poor overview by amazon

Quake 3 Arena is a great game. The weapons are hardly groundbreaking innovations. But why would they need to be? I own both this and Unreal tournament and for pure deathmatch competitions nothing beats Q3A. It's focus on gameplay over a multitude of weapon modes is what really allows it to shine. Games like UT can become to bogged down in the cuteness and novelty of 25 weapon fire modes. And let's not even talk about the unbalancing caused by the redeemer.

On another note, the Amazon overview of the game is completly incorrect. A) There is no flamethrower built in to the game, some mods include one, but ID did not. B) What player classes? Again, there are some great mods which provide team fortress gameplay (Weapons Factory and Q3Fortress), but character choice is inconsequential in relation to gameplay in vanilla Q3A.

THIS GAME ROCKS. IT IS ONE OF THE BEST GAMES I HAVE EVER PLAYTED. my friend and i play always when we get back from school. its awseome. the 4 stars is really 5 1/2 becuz single player can get boring. i was about 9 when i discovered that multiplayer actually wqorked by accidently clicking on it and seeing servers. if u have a crap 4 connection dont plan on playin interenet cuz u will lag a lot. i have played Unreal Tournament and i think i like unreal better then quake but i dunnno. its a good overall game as long as u play multi player

A Near-Flawless Deathmatch Experience

I've always been an Unreal Tournament person, but lately I've been playing the Q3A demo a lot and decided to get the full version. The engine is the smoothest and most powerful I've ever experienced in an FPS. It is fast as Hell and accomodates an extraordinary degree of precision in regard to movement and aim, which is easily noticable if you use a mouse that takes advantage of unusually high-res environments (I use an Intellimouse Explorer). Unfortunately, the graphic designs for a lot of the levels using it are kind of boring aesthetically... lots of castles and gothic constructions, and those space levels with the jump pads. Then again, most of my favorite flashy, unconventional UT levels had bad framerates. I did find the weapons a bit of a problem, not so much because they are unoriginal as because they are unbalanced. It is rare that anyone uses anything other than rockets and railguns, which hurts gameplay a bit. The built in alternative modes of play are not great, but the mod community is fairly advanced. I still like UT more, but any true FPS fan should have a copy of this.
