Reading through these reviews, it seems that Steam is giving people a lot of trouble and thus, the game a bad name. I for one have had no problems with Steam. I bought the game in a store, installed it, and it has run fine. For those worried about the internet connection, you only need this to register your copy of the game. Once installed on a machine, you can select to play a game in "off-line" mode (meaning no internet required). Just thought I would help clarify.

So let me get this straight, you nerds give this game a bad review because you had a bad experience with tech support or Valve's Steam?
Are you retarded? Don't give this game 1 or 2 stars just because you had bad experiences with the company. (Wow, I hate stupid people.)
The game itself is probably one of the most amazing games out there. The Half-Life series redefines the first-person shooter genre.
Awesome game. Buy it. I'm a cheap ba$%ard when it comes to buying games, because I'm always afraid of regretting the purchase. But this is one purchase I DO NOT regret making!
Best game, but worst possible distribution

Here's the truth behind HL2 and Steam: Half Life 2 is, in mine and many others' opinions, the best game ever made for PC. Especially because the level design is simply beautiful.
However, Steam is one of the most terrible inventions ever introduced to the gaming world. If you don't have internet access, DO NOT BUY THIS GAME because you will not be able to play. Steam is a program which has control over Half Life/Counterstrike/all other games in the series. Once you create an account and associate your cd key with the account, the cd key will never work for any other account. However, you can download and play games you have in your account on other computers as long as you log in with your account. Unfortunately, I believe only one computer can be logged into your account at a time. But there's a LOT more to it. I have no idea how Steam works. I don't know if anyone does. It's worth dealing with though, and from what I can tell it seems pretty fair.
Overall, once you get past the hassle of Steam, you're in for one of the best gaming experiences of your lifetime, so I'll go ahead and give it 5 stars.
Half-Life 2 : Game Of The Year

This seems just like the issue that occured last year when people had purchased Half-Life 2 via a retail store before Half-Life 2's official release date had occurred.
People flooded the Steampowered forums wanting to know why their game did not work.
It did not work because the official release date had been broken.
I purchased my Half-Life 2 through Steam.
I didn't get to play it earlier than the release date.
I had to wait too.
I don't claim to know why the Half-Life 2 : Game Of The Year edition isn't working for you, but I would think it has something to do with being sold earlier than it's release date.
Half-Life 2 is a great game and when the validation servers are ready, you will be able to play your game(s).

Possibly the best game ever made since 2004. It comes with half-life 1: source, a digitally re-mastered version of half-life . Half-life 2's graphics are beautiful! Even on low end hardware If you have a computer that is from 2002 or later you can probably play this game on at least low setting. Half-life 2-
PROS: Great visuals. Great A.I. Great variety of weapons and ammo. Great sound and good character and story. Comes with Half-life 1:source, Counter-Strike: Source(best multiplayer game ever!!!) and if it is really a PRO Half-life 2: Death Match. It also comes with steam which organizes Valve games for you and auto updates your games.
CONS: Steam in my book is helpful but I also consider it AD-WARE, I haven't had any of the random crashed that others mention. But I did install the game and then try to play it and go what why can't I play it... 5 Seconds later Steam pops up telling me to play the game I have to become a member. I was like "what that's gay...whatever"
This is seriously with Counter-Strike: Source and HL1: Source the best game of 2004.
I recommend having a Decent PC, such as mine:
Gigabyte Motherboard, AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+, Seagate 320GB SATA-2 HDD x2, Corsair ValueSelects 2GB O/C DDR2-800, eVGA GeForce 7900GS 256MB x2 in SLI Mode, Dual DVD-RW Drives.

If anyone can find a first person shooter that can beat this one I will be not only delighted because i can buy it and play it but rather extremely surprised because ive played many pc games and to be honest this puts all of those to shame. And i ran it on a laptop. If you like a linear story that is extremely realistic you WILL NOT be disappointed. Best PC game to date that I have ever played and to say the least ive been around the block. Once you play it you will see why it clearly won the game of the year.

To say this game is great is an understatement. The level of immersion and graphical quality present in this game are almost unparalleled. The best part of this edition is the addition of Half-Life 2 Deathmatch. There's nothing better than playing multiplayer with the gravity gun! Also, this version is far superior to both the original PC and XBox versions.
