Forty Years Of The X Men.
INTRODUCTION:
Over the years, The X Men have consistently been one of the most popular comic book superhero groups of all. It's hard to believe that the characters created so many decades ago has remained so popular for so long, and that the concept succeeded despite so many people's initial doubts! Unfortunately over the years, many of these classic comic book stories have been long out of print. But on the good side, the success of the recent live-action Marvel films have caused a massive resurgence in the popularity of the company's many comic series. And thus, many of the old stories have been given new life in many ways. One of these ways is the new DVD ROM set, Forty Years Of The X Men. Read on, and see if this set does the team's legacy justice!
OVERVIEW:
Forty Years Of The X Men is, essentially, a collection of hundreds of comics spanning the era from the sixties to the present. The package consists of a single DVD ROM disc, compatible with PCs and MACs alike, and it retails for approximately fifty dollars.
REVIEW:
I love Marvel Comics, as anyone who has read any of my reviews will surely already know. And this package more than does The X Men's comic book legacy justice. The obvious good point of this set is its sheer value. For one fairly low price, you get HUNDREDS OF comics, in all their original uncut glory. Hell, these even have all the old ads! The Marvel Masterworks reprints may feature improved picture/color quality, but you only get usually nine to eleven comics, and the less-expensive paperback versions of those books are only available at Barnes And Noble (a huge problem if you don't have one of those stores nearby.) Not to mention the Masterworks representation only covers roughly the first fifty to sixty volumes. Back to the matter at hand. With the exception of the picture quality, this set beats the Marvel Masterworks reprints on every level. The best part of this set, though, is that Marvel corrected pretty much every flaw of the Spider-Man set that came earlier. This has the annual issues, and it's on one DVD ROM instead of eleven CD ROMs. It's almost as if the Marvel people read everyone's Amazon reviews and tailor-made this set to their specifications! All in all it's a sweet set, and a much better value than the Masterworks and Essentials collections.
EDITION NOTES:
This package is a fairly recent release, but its availability is hit and miss. Take my advice and check in several stores that carry computer software. One store is bound to have it, eventualy. And if not, you can order it.
OVERALL:
Despite the ultimately-neglectable flaws, this is a collection that belongs in the home of every Marvel Comics fan out there. Many reissues of these classic stories have been done over the years, but this is by far the ultimate one, and the best value. Final verdict? HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Amazing, Great place to start

Not only can you start from the beginning but you can see the evolution of the X-Men. Why Wolverine and Cyclops are always at each other's throat, why the original X-Men are different from the current, how Phoenix's powers emerged, how Professor X loss the use of his legs, power changes, huge plotlines and twists, etc.
Also, I own a Mac and have no problem using the DVD.
THE GOOD:
Over 485 issues with all pages and in full color. To purchase these, even in TPB format would be hundreds of dollars.
THE BAD:
No crossover issues. Plus, reading them on screen is not that much fun unless you have a notebook. I'm printing them out and it's A LOT of paper.
VERDICT:
The good by far outweighs the bad if you are a true X-Men fan or want to start from the beginning.

I collected X-Men back in the 70's and 80's, and always loved the original team the best. My collection is now socked safely away from children and dogs and whatnot, but I can now enjoy every issue in prestine mint wherever I find myself, even take the whole kit and kaboodle on the road. A previous reviewer was frustrated at Mac OS X not being able to detect his DVD. He may want to get a replacement disk, because I can vouch personally that the DVD runs perfectly on my Mac portable.
Good for the Uncanny X men completists! Saves room!

I've bought this product only to supplement my Uncanny X men collection. I have all the Uncanny X men comics or books from Giant Sized X men to current issue of Uncanny X men 470 and I must say this is a good supplement if you don't want to pay a lot of money for the older 1970 issues. I used this DVD rom as quick reference if I want to go back to read an issue.
This set does include Annuals too and the table of contents is laid out in years so it's easy to navigate through and see the covers. I also agree that sometimes you have to adjust your Adobe PDF to fit the pages so you can read clearly which can be a little annoying.
I sit in front of computers all day and when it's slow at work, I launch this baby and read away. It's nothing like sifting through years of X men..it's just clicks away. However, I rather have real comic in my hand if I'm resting at home on the couch then having a hot labtop on my chest. So the money you spend is worth it, I mean I see the Uncanny X men 266 sometimes sell half the selling price of this DVD ROM. ;)
Great....but very dissapointing packaging...

While I love the content and the overall idea, it seems they seriously skimped on the packaging. All you get, outside of the outer box, is a cd in a paper envelope. No jewel case, book, insert, etc.......perhaps it's on the cd.
Excellent buy

I've tried this on two different mac computers: an emac desktop and an ibook G4, it runs perfectly on both. I see that some people are having problems, I'll see if I can help with that at the end of the review.
I'm a huge x-men fan, but can't afford to buy a bunch of back-issues. The essential book collections are affordable, but they're printed in black & white. With this one disc you get almost 500 uncanny issues, including annuals, all are high-quality scan in's. The disc also has a nice little bio section, and comes with the neccessary adobe software. The one down-side is that you miss out on he tie-in issues, whick gets irritating mid-90's, but I'm not docking a star for that because what you get is well worth the price, and it's clearly stated in the description that this is strictly "uncanny".
OK, for those of you having trouble getting it to run w/ a mac here's the process:load cd, click cd image on your desktop twice. You'll get a finder window w/ various files/folders, one will have install on it, this should be the adobe software, follow the installation instructions, and move your new adobe reader to applications when finished, restart your computer. Once re-started load the cd again, open adobe reader 6.0 click the folder image in the upper left-hand corner you should have a finder-type window, go to desktop, click on x-men and choose start.pdf. You should be good to go. HTH

This is a great item for any collector or new fans to the X-men. All the older along with the newer issues look great. The CD includes all issues of the Uncanny X-men (1-461) along with Giant Sized and annual issues. There is also comprehensive biographies on the more popular characters and artwork and layouts of the Xaiver Institute. Could it of had more content, maybe, but this will keep one busy for a long time. With easy maneuverabiltity, this is a highly addictive CD with virtually months of entertainment.

Honetslty I got this product two weeks ago, and ohh my.... I lost my life to it. This prodcut has every Uncanny X-Men for over 40 years. I'm trying to read them all, but of course that more then 500 comics. I proably won't finish untill 2 years from now (that's if I read 2 a day (which is my goal).
The only promblem I have with the product (and i found this promblem with all the Marvel comic that are scanned in) is that one page is acutally 2 pages layed out. It's really hard to read on the computer and you really don't want to buy 11"17" paper and a duplex printer to acutally try to print this out. So you are sort of subjected to reading it on the computer, which stinks, because you have to minimize the page about 3 times so you can read each panel. When you get into the 70's (the year not the comic) it gets a little harder because Marvel uses more vertical panel, and you can't really see the text if you want to see the whole panel. Then it really stinks when Marvel uses 2 whole pages of art with the story, because you are zooming in and out to find the next text and trying to read it and enjoy the artwork at the same time. Also it really funny that you can see the staple on the scan copy.
Now you ask is it worth the trouble? If you really want to read these comic, "Yes it is." And you will save tons of money buying this product instead of the reprint book form. Now i have to say it is nice to have the book and go anywhere you want with it, but you can do the same with the laptop, but you will hate that paneling with the mouse.
Is the prodcut children friendly? NO! But doesn't mean they won't enjoy it. Just means that it would have be better if it was more interactive.
Great Idea!

My husband loves having access to all these comics. We both like that by having them on the cd they don't take up space around the house. He is looking at others that he wants to get too.
Works on Vista!

I completely agree with the other posts that there are no other x-titles included (please put New Mutants and X-Factor in this collection), but where else can you get 500+ comics IN COLOR for $50 or so? That would be about 4 of the Essential X-men series titles, which would stop in the mid-80s. This has 3 times more comics, plus they are in color. I know use Microsoft Vista, and they work perfectly (I have also purchased 44 years of Fantastic Four, 40 years of the Avengers, and the Incredible Hulk complete collection). Good wind-down activity for the night. Great buy! If you want to completed a storyline that requires other x-books, it is much cheaper to buy a used color collection of the arc than to start from the beginning. Great buy!
