this is fun game for people who like ninja's its fast paced fun uses ninjitsu (ninja magic) probably one of the better ninja games to be created for the ps2. warning shinobi not an easy game. you wil have to try it a few time's but its still fun and not as hard as ninja gaiden.

GOOD GAME BUT HAS FLAWS

THE REASON I GOT THIS GAME IS BECAUSE THEY DON'T HAVE NINJA GAIDEN FOR PS2. NOW DON'T GET ME WRONG I DON'T REGRET BUYING THIS GAME, I'M JUST SAYING THAT NINJA GAIDEN WASN'T AVAILABLE FOR PS2. ANYWAYS, THE GAME REVOLVES AROUND HOTSUMA AND HIS QUEST FOR REVENGE. HE HAS SPEED, STRENGTH, INTELLIGENCE, SHURIKENS, AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST THE ALMIGHTY AKUJIKI. AKUJIKI CAN AND WILL KILL ANYTHING AND I DO MEAN ANYTHING. TANKS, HELICOPTERS, DEMONS, HUMANS, AND ANYTHING ELSE YOU CAN CONJURE UP IN THIS GAME. THE ACTION IS FAST AND INTENSE AND THE GRAPHICS AREN'T HALF BAD. THE GOOD STUFF IS THAT HOTSUMA CAN CLING TO AND CLIMB ON WALLS WHICH IS MANDATORY FOR A LOT OF THE GAME AND CERTAIN LEVELS. THE "TATE" IS A NICE TOUCH AS WELL. DEFEATING SEVERAL ENEMIES GOES TO A CUTSCENE OF HOTSUMA FROZEN IN TIME AND ALL THE ENEMIES FALLING TO PIECES AROUND HIM. THE STORY ISN'T HALF BAD EITHER. IT SHOWS IN FLASHBACKS HOTSUMA'S LIFE AND REASONS FOR HIS QUEST. NOW FOR THE FLAWS. THE STEALTH DASH IS GOOD TO A POINT. A LOT OF TIMES ENEMIES ARE OUT OF THE RANGE OF THE DASH WHICH IS A REAL PAIN IN THE [...] SINCE IT WILL MESS UP YOUR "TATE" SEVERAL TIMES. THE TARGETING SYSTEM WILL SOMETIMES TARGET THE ENEMY FARTHEST AWAY INSTEAD OF THE ONE CLOSES TO YOU. NOT TO MENTION AKUJIKI IS CONSTANTLY WANTING BLOOD AND IF IT DOESN'T GET IT, IT STARTS TO DRAIN YOU. A LOT OF OTHER REVIEWERS COMPLAIN OF REPETIVENESS WITH THE GAMEPLAY WHICH I CAN AGREE WITH ALSO. IT DOES GET A LITTLE BORING WITH THE DASH/SLASH REPEAT THING BEING THE FOCAL POINT OF THE GAME. AND LASTLY, I THINK SOME CHEAT CODES WOULDN'T HAVE HURT EITHER. BUT, ALL IN ALL I CAN SAY THAT I ENJOY PLAYING IT FROM TIME TO TIME.

Old-School

If you're looking for a challenge, old school game play, or just some sweet ninja action, then this game is for you. It might be the hardest game I've ever played, its set up to be a straight forward challenge through the levels, and you're a futuristic ninja, I don't see what could go wrong.

Graphically speaking, the game is top notch for a PS2 game. It really is one of the best looking games of the last generation. It even has some decent textures, which was a rare thing at the time. Everything is really detailed, especially the character models. I never experienced a frame rate drop, which is important because the game play is very difficult and fast-paced. The thing that really stands out for me is the fluid animations. The way you move through the game just seem right, and very ninja-like, if that makes any sense. Plus your scarf seems like it had its own development team because its so detailed and has some of the craziest animations I've ever seen. This game is just gushing with visual style. There's well used blur effects, over the top gore, and just an awesome art design, that I find to be very appealing.

The soundtrack won't blow anyone's mind, but it fits the game's style well. It seems like a revamped soundtrack of all those old arcade games you loved to play as a kid. I find it to be especially awesome thanks to nostalgia. The sound effects themselves work just fine, no real need for improvement.

The game play is fairly simple, but hard. Not only do you have a small life meter that can drop quickly, but most of your enemies seem to have more life than you do, which wouldn't be that difficult except that you fight up to a bout 10 at a time sometimes. A cool twist, that also adds to the difficulty as well as the fun is that your sword will get stronger with the more enemies you kill, but if you go for a period of time without killing anyone, you health will drain. This helps to keep you in the action.

Unfortunately no game is without flaws. We all love a challenge, but sometimes Shinobi pushes it a little too far. Whenever you die, you have to start at the beginning of the level. Also, some of the bosses seem to flat out cheat. There's also not a whole lot of replay-ability. Despite its flaws, I consider this to be an awesome game. If you like ninjas, a challenge, or want to experience some nostalgia, then this is the game for you.

Not for the emotionally unstable.

Shinobi is a fast-paced, action packed, hack'n'slash dash game, that takes constant concentration or else you'll pay the price. Don't get me wrong, I love Ninja games like the Tenchu series, and who doesn't like a super-cool ninja going around to slash his zombie clansmen around a basically devastated Tokyo, while posing like a bad-... at that? You've heard the graphics are great, sound is great, story line passes, but then there is the game play. Controls are easy to handle once you've become accustomed to them. No problem there, that's like with any new game right? But in this situation, it's basically crucial. Now you'll have to maneuver over countless lava beds, pitfalls, borderless walls with pitfalls (and that's all to intensify the game play) WHILE combining your attacks to make a "Tate Combo." Sounds easy? Play this game for three days and you'll understand. And no matter how good you are with killing your enemies, NO amount of health or Yin will save you from falling to your doom. Say you get so far into a really hard level...and fall...now you'll have to restart all over again, and endure that same difficulty. No save point in the middle of playing so you'll HAVE to restart to the exact place. Sounds fun? Not really, it's basically stressful and full of sweaty palms, blood-shot eyes, and yells at the television. However, I've been having the game for a while now, and I still haven't beaten it, but I do eventually enjoy going through previous levels and try to regain my sanity, or play something else. Some other advice, don't expect to beat the game in a week (or two) cause it won't happen. Patience, stamina, and some serious concentration is required for this game. I don't know what SEGA was thinking, but here it is for all to enjoy.

Sega What happened to Yuzo Koshiro ?

Revenge of Shinobi and Shinobi 3 are Masterpieces. This game is far from that. Difficulty is not based on skill but rather on how long will u play before u smash the controller over your head. I played this game until the last boss with the strategy guide. I could not beat the last boss, this is actually only the second time I have not been able to finish a game in my life.

Yuzo Koshiro synonymies with Streets Of Rage and Shinobi, made some of the best 16-bit Music. Why did Sega abandon this guy?

It's worth checking out if u are a fan of the original Shinobi, but this is not Joe Musashi.

What happened to killing enemy with shrunken, in this game your shrukens are good for nothing. Also blocking has seemed to have disappeared. That's what really frustrated me about this game there were little things that could have been tweaked.

Overall it's still a good action game but not up to par with the rest of the series.

awesome game...love the sega references

there's not much to dislike in this game, except for the fact that those dogs are REALLY FREAKING HARD. if you havent played it you obviously dont know what im talking about, but there are these dogs where you can only damage them from the rear (actually you can only damage about 1/8th of thier body, the rest is armor that cant be penetrated.) other than that its a solid game. great graphics and all, and if you remember the sega game, the telephone poles and billboards break away just like in the original games (in too many cartoonish looking pieces, only 128 bit effects rather than the 16 bit effects found on the sega game.) and if you like martial arts movies, the story lines basically like the premise of those movies (your dojo/master has been killed you must avenge thier deaths.) again not much to dislike

See, I just dont see the point in writing reviews of products before they come out. Can someone explain that to me? How to you know that this is gonna "rock" or "rule" or anything of the sort? Well, I know...I own it and have played it extensivley since it was released on the 13th of november. I like this game...quite a bit actually. While the first level seems a bit slow, it is all a set up to get you familiar with the controls and the system of movement. This game is a visual masterpiece.
With an impressive frame rate, and a blindingly fast character, prepare to be amazed.
Gameplay is just as frenzied, fast, and furious as the visual presentation. The levels are quite large, and in later levels can get quite complex and difficult to traverse. The story is engaging as well, and the voice acting is pretty well done too. This game is not one for the casual weekend gamer. Shinobi will require you to invest some time in it...most evidently in the later levels. With your sword hungry for blood, you need to keep eliminating enemies in order to keep it satiated, if not- it will turn on you and start to deplete your energy. So you need to find a balance between fighting the enemies and just rushing past them to the end of the level.
I read a review of this game in a popular playstation magazine, and was startled that it got less than glowing reviews. This game is one in a long time that actually presents a challenge and isnt easily beaten, and I, for one, like that. I love a game that gives me fits of frustration and ups the tension level, give me a challenge...after all, I shelled out 50 bucks for it...it might as well give me my money's worth right?
I cant really describe this game in words, you should purchase it, rent it if you want, in order to get the gist of what I am trying to say. Renters beware...once you get this game, you wont want to take it back to the store. Buyers...keep this one at home...dont loan it out, you might not get it back. Its just awesome. Beautifully presented, Brilliantly executed and Blazingly fast..yep! I wanna be a ninja too!

Shinobi returns...with a Vengeance!

Shinobi's Back!! You all saw the commercial; now reap the benefits that it's finally out. One of Sega's oldest and under-appreciated franchises returns on the PS2 in 3D. Those familiar with Shinobi will be surprised to find out that this Shinobi is not the Joe Musashi of the past, but a new ninja named Hotsuma of the Oboro clan. Shinobi starts again in a new direction and with a new character. But the classic game play of the past titles is retained, this time in glorious 3D.

A 3D Action platform game, Shinobi is heavy on action. Like 90% action, all the time. The other 10% is cinemas and platform skills. No running around looking for a key to open a door, this game is fast and furious. Unlike the Shinobi's of old, your primary weapon is your sword and not the shuriken. You have a cursed enchanted sword that grows stronger with every enemy cut down, and thirsts for blood...if you don't satisfy its thirst; it soon feeds off your own life. The shuriken still remains, and is used to stun enemies at long range...of course, the multiple shuriken toss while flipping is present, but in 3D. Ninja magic is here as well, and you can now run along walls and stick to them like Spiderman.

Graphics are sharp and look great, and the game moves very smoothly. There is a hint of the jaggies once in awhile, but for the most part, the textures are great. Sound is spot on, and music is reminiscent of the Shinobi style music of games past. One of the coolest features of the game is in the combat, as you can dispatch enemies with Tate (pronounced Tah-tay). If you have 4 or more enemies, and dispatch them all within a certain time period of each other, a very cool sequence awaits you. All the enemies are "frozen" and while Hotsuma sheaths his sword, they fall apart in pieces. It's hard to describe, but you must see it in action to appreciate it. Trust me, you will want to dispatch them in Tate after you do it once. In this sense, and the soul feeding of the defeated enemies and style dispatching of enemies reminds me of Devil May Cry. And that's a good thing.

The story is told through CG sequences and looks great. Extras abound, including the chance to use Joe Musashi once you unlock him! Sega and Shinobi are back!!

Kick ... - all action !!

Got the game the day it was released and this is definately a "MUST HAVE" game; Not just for those who played the original Shinobi series. The game is quite difficult and it can get frustrating at times. This doesn't make the game less fun or lose interest. This is one of those game, you'll be playing till your thumbs starts hurting and you have to take a break. Game graphics are Good but not spectacular. Sound is above average and keep you into the game. The camera angle at times need to be adjusted but not a major issue. Haven't completed the game but the plot is interesting enough to keep you going. The only people that would dislike this game, are people that like saving all the time. Sega has done a very good job bringing back an all time classic for the next generation system(PS2).
