Tenchu and then Tenchu 2

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 4 / 5

Tenchu 2 is a great game and has far more excellent replay value than expected. I used to play the original Tenchu a lot -- where stealth wasn't worth much overall, and hacking and slashing meant more. In Tenchu 2, the stakes are raised a bit higher in that some missions require COMPLETE stealth in your attempts. I have seen all the levels and they are all incredibly complicated (but not detailed: think "Deus Ex" or "Unreal Tournament"). The cinematics are spectacular -- it feels as if you are watching one of those black-and-white cinematic movies open in color (all except it is not QUITE as tacky!).

The goods on the game: 1) Excellent replay value. You can create your own missions, and you have 3 characters storylines to find out. 2) Eeringly realistic. The characters (enemies) actually taunt you when they see you and alert the other enemies (more or less). The audio effects are great...there are crickets, birds, dogs, etc. and they actually sound like the animals they represent. Additionally, the traps sound like aluminum cans and they bang around when you touch them. 3) Stealth animations. The crowning achievement from Tenchu and now this one as well... 4) Cinematics. Well worth the game value alone with effort put into it...not just a simple cut and paste or having bubbles for speech (thinking Final Fantasy series). 5) Different enemies. It goes without saying, but these enemies are not the same -- they have different dress and they wear masks sometimes. 6) The scenery. Sorta makes you wish you were born in feudal Japan.

The bad: 1) Distorted view after some maneuvers. 2) Moving. This is bad...you can't easily turn around. 3) The "ki" meter. In the game, you have to rely on it with skepticism sometimes. The ki confuses you by "sensing" both your allies and your enemies. 4) (Potentially bad). For those into hack and slack of the original, you won't have much of that here -- unless you plan on dying QUICKLY.

5) The computer AI. If you've played "Deus Ex" or "Unreal Tournament," you'll understand. The AI is not completely stupid, but it is erratic -- sometimes displaying brilliance and sometimes just plain S-T-U-P-I-D. 6) Out-dated graphics. Can be forgiven but not forgotten...

This game has great looking graphics and the story is captivating; however, the controls for the characters are very twitchy. You can't adjust them either. This is one of those games where you are given a selection of configuration A, B, or C, so basically there is no way of fixing the controlls. The character cannot strafe and turn at the same time, which is very important if you want to keep you eyes on you opponent. Then there is this weird, wall clinging move that the character does. the problem with it is that sometimes he will not do it when you want him to and, of course, do it when you don't. When the character gets into a battle, he always manages to turn his back on his opponent. You can try your best to keep the "bad guy" in front of you, but these "expert" ninjas always turn their backs on their opponents as if they want to die(it's very aggravating). Even with all this aggravation, the most IRRITATING thing about this game is the way "bad guys" seem to drop from the sky. You can check an area out thoughly and know for certain that the area is clear, then suddenly a "bad guy" just appears. I'm not talking about walking up on you, that does happen, but that's normal. I'm talking about characters just vaporizing right beside you. Honestly, I wonder if they even tested this game before they released it. I could program a game better than this.

Not as good as the first

Tenchu 2 doesn't really hold a candle to it's predecessor. Theproblems that existed in the 1st ... are back and worse than before. On the plus side, it offers some new features like hiding the corpses of your slain enemies, new moves, new weapons and a mission editor(which pretty ... cool!) If you can look past the problems, tenchu 2 provides hours of slash em' up,lob it off fun for the whole family.

Inferior sequel/prequel

'Tenchu 2: The Birth Of The Assassins' should have been a much better game than the original 'Tenchu', which still stands as one of the best games from Playstation. But instead we get a much inferior sequel. Though the graphics in the first one were a little weak, they are even more so in this as some of them look down right terrible. Obviously, someone decided to rush this game into the market....Granted, there are 29 missions to complete and many of the fighting moves have returned, but the controls will have you pulling out your hair in frustration. In many cases, as with fighting the bosses, you'll find yourself falling right off the screen as you get spun around when attempting a strike. Needless to say, stealth is almost mandatory for survival. Also, your long range vision is impaired as you can barely see in front of your nose.

The game does include the capability to create your own levels as well as playing a third character other than the staple two. But the weaknesses just about ruin what should have been a great game - Such a shame.

The assassins strike back!

I waited so long for a sequel of "Tenchu: Stealth Assassins" to come out, and when it finally did, I didn't hesitate to get it. This game (in certain aspects) proved to be superior to the first one. The story was much cooler and full of twists and the voice acting was much better too. Also, the people's mouths moved when they spoke... awesome! The graphics and cut-scenes were better too. The people actually performed different actions like walking around and jumping super high in the air and performing other things that were absent in the first game, like walking and fighting in the cut-scenes.

I only have a couple of complaints: the missions and enemies at times were extremely difficult and getting caught just once or twice could make you a novice in no time at all. In the first game, you could get caught 3 times and still be given a ranking of a ninja. With all the negative things aside, I'd like to focus one more positive: getting the chance to play as the bad guy. The new ninja Tatsumaru gets amnesia and becomes evil, taking on missions for the villain Lady Kagami and even fighting his old allies Azuma Shiunsai, Rikimaru, and Ayame. This game (being a prequel to the first one) even shows how Rikimaru got that scar he has on his eye: Tatsumaru slashes it with Rikimaru's own future sword Izayoi when he had his guard down. "Tenchu 2: Birth of the Stealth Assassins" was a great, yet challenging, game. I can't wait till Part 3 comes out for the Playstation 2.

Tenchu 2 is not for the weak

Tenchu 2 was a welcome addition to my game library. I considered the original one of my favorites. In the second game the levels aren't more difficult but require different strategies and patience. The only detractor I found in the game were the combat combinations for Ayame and Tetsumaru. Ayame has limited reach and her wild swinging style can cause her to end up with her back to the enemy. This can be a major problem facing a boss. Tetsumaru has a hard hitting combo but if the enemy is not directly in front of him or is pushed to either side of the attack during combat than he has the same problem. It was great to see that each character has separate and unique levels with specialized bosses. This leads the player to be able to play nearly 40 levels between Rickimaru, Ayame, and Tetsumaru including hidden levels found in the options once all levels for each character are completed. These hidden levels are shorter but challenging none the less. The bosses are much tougher than the original and require the use of backflips, side slides and blocking that the average gamer will not take the time to learn. They will therefore get frustrated and quit and blame the game for their inability to perform any function besides hack and slash. If finesse is mastered this game is beautifly designed and a wonderful gameplaying experience.

This game i love and always will. not many people know about the tenchu series. they are great games and should not be overlooked. tenchu 2 is the story of 3 azuma ninjas who get caught up in battle with the rebellious ninja group the burning dawn. you choose to play as rikimaru or ayame with 10 levels each. plus, also have missions with third character tatsumaru. Good story that is pretty predictable but still fun. needs more missions though.

Well i rushed out and bought this the first day out and it was very impressive. The CG cinemas are way better the the ones in Tenchu. You can unlock a third character. This game also features diffrent missions for Rikimaru and Ayame. The mission editor is awesome. this game is definitely a 5 star hit. It also has many new actions like sheatihing and unsheathing your weapon, dragging bodies, stealing items from bodies. Now you can swim in the water and occasionly you will meet up with a great white shark which is really cool. This game is a definite buyer for anyone who liked the first one.
