Firstly, I am an MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) guru. I've been watching it for years, and I've had this game since it's release day. I just joined on Amazon, so I'm just now reviewing the game.
This game is much better than the UFC games that are out. The UFC games seem to have too much inconsitency in its fights. A stand-up striker should not be able to submit a submission master within 10 seconds (50 seconds their time) in every fight. Every UFC game is simple, no challenge. Pride FC is more realistic in the fighting aspect. There is a wide variety of moves, animations, and quality fighters. Pride has the best fighters in the world, and this game provides all of the ones from a few years ago. Most importantly, Vanderlei Silva is present.
The graphics are decent. The bodies look like they're made mostly of plastic, which is bothersome when looking at the screen. The faces are well done, they just look like they're mounted on top of a plastic sheet.
The gameplay is done really well. Most matches will not end within a few seconds. They can, but most likely will not. Most of the important fight positions are available. Stand-up, stand-up clinch, mount, back-mount, and guard are available. One position that UFC Sudden Impact has over Pride is the side-mount. That could have been very beneficial in the Pride game. Still, what is in the game is good enough to enjoy.
Besides the plastic look, there are a couple of other aspects of the game that annoy me. #1 is the extremely loud bomb-like sound effect. When someone punches or kicks their opponent, it literally sounds like a bomb exploded on the impact. #2 is the lack of a career mode of any type. You can create fighters (up to 12 per memory card, I believe), and make them good from conception. There is a tournament mode, which is VERY well done. The fighter entrances are spot-on with the real-life counterparts. The crowd can be somewhat dull during them, but the presentation of the real events is still there. But, other than the tournament and exhibition modes, the game really lacks depth. That is why I rate it as a 3 overall. #3 Why do the UFC and Pride games have extremely accelerated clocks? The makers of the games refuse to give us real-time fights. Even when you put the round time to 15 minutes, it's only about 3 or 4 in real-time. This needs to be fixed with future MMA games. If they didn't make strikes do so much damage, the energy bars would not drain so quickly. Also, the grappling and submission systems could be better done. If something like the WWE Smackdown games were implemented for these areas, the fights could be much more entertaining. Give us a meter where you must place an indicator into the correct position. The better a fighter is at submissions, the bigger the target and the slower the indicator moves. If a player is worse at them, do the opposite. It's not that hard to figure out.
Multiplayer is very fun, as long as you play against somebody who knows how to play the game. If you can get somebody to play with you, the game is more enjoyable that way.
In the end, the fights are realistic, the overall presentation is well done, and Pride FC is an entertaining game (especially multi-player). But, the lack of depth brings the enjoyment level and replayability down. The next time an MMA game is created, a DECENT career mode should be created. So far, they have either been TERRIBLE, or non-existent.
Pretty bad game.... yet somewhat addictive

There is one thing wrong with this game.... it takes all of about 10 seconds to win a match. The game goes by WAY too fast. And just like the guy above, the Grand Prix thing I beat about 4 times on the hardest difficulty on the first day... this game just isn't challenging. I am yet to play the UFC games (which was what I wanted in the first place), but I'm sure they have this game beat by a long shot.
No thrills but addictive fight game 3.5 Stars

It's difficult to give longevity to any game of this type, and making it impossibly difficult is a turn off also. The balance here is pretty cool, most of the World's top fighters are here for you to use and play around with, with a mixture of fighting styles, and moves. The graphics engine is tight, and amongst the most realistic out there, even if the blood splattering on the canvas and the camera lens doesn't always tie up. The "create a fighter" is fun, and involving, and although the actual fight controls are complex, they aren't ridiculous as in some other games.
On the plus side, this game has good playability and the experimentation with different set moves, clothes, styles, and a myriad of moves keep you interested. On the negative side the "easy" level is too easy, and the normal and pro levels take time and patience, thankfully there is a continue option when you get beaten. There is lots of potential for two player and multi player options, but the opening entrance sequences and pre fight garb get tedious after a few watches. Overall not the best martial arts fight game out there, but not too complex to operate, and great graphics make it a bargain title for the PS2. More die hard fans should check out the new "Rocky" for pure boxing, otherwise this is a good night in laugh. Enjoy!
More fun to watch than to play

This is a good game but unfortunately there are some huge faults that you will notice right away. the first is the gameplay and plain and simple, it sucks. heres the way to win, just keep doing a submission. the striking system is also a bit faulty because you can knock someone out if you are on your back. it doesnt work that way in real life if someone is mounted on you. the create a fighter is fun but there are a lack of options for what you can wear, and practically everything that the real fighters wear, you can not. there is also no season mode, just single and grand prix. not much to it. i was pretty disappointed by it, but its amusing for parties and a ton of fun to do a grand prix with random characters so you can have the craziest matches and just watch it. at this price though, i would recomend it, or you can just wait for UFC sudden impact, which will hopefully be much better than this.
I hope this isn't as real as it gets

I got this game yesterday. I have a few problems with it:
1) All of the fighters are left handed!
All of the fighters use a lefty stance! If they wanted to have uniform stances they should have made them use the right-hander stance. Even then, it is unacceptable for each character to not have the general orientation of his stance.
2. Some things are just not realistic.
There are far too many reversals in this game. The mount position occurs way too often in this game - it is as common or perhaps even more common than the guard. The mount is supposed to be a dominant position, but Nog can submit an attacker with a guillotine choke from the bottom of the mount!
3. The game is far too easy (with certain fighters) -- I have won the grand prix on the most difficult level already and I got it yesterday: I got my ps2 yesterday as well!
I suppose the game is a lot more fast paced than a regular pride fight, but perhaps a realistic pride simulation wouldn't sell well.
It's not the world's worst game but all that is good about this game has written in the other reviews .
Simply the best.

PrideFC for the PS2 is the best Mixed Martial Arts game yet to be made. Not only does it feature some of the world's best fighters it has the most realistic fighting engine yet. With stand up fighting, guard, and mount being featured. The move set is deep and fighter specific. Also, created fighters can be totaly customized from looks to the moves of your choice from all fighting positions. I would recomend this game to any MMA fan or anyone who would like a realistic fighting game. You won't find sonic booms or fireballs but you will find the most realistic fighter for the PS2. If you think you can handel it pop it in and step in the ring with Ken Shamrock, just be ready to tap.
No hype, THE best mma game ever!

Pride FC for the PS2 is the most realistic mixed martial arts game ever made. What makes it stand out from the competition (UFC Tapout 2) is the numerous reversals and counters available to the fighters. The animation is life-like and fluid. Each fighter accurately represents their real-life counterparts, and their moves are truly unique from each other. Given, they all share the basic moves and controls for applying submissions or going for the takedowns. They also have custom combos that are simple enough to remember. But what makes Pride FC unique is that the animations of the techniques used by the fighters differ from each other. Igor Vovchanchyn's left hook will not look like Guy Mezger's. This is a highly strategic game that can be fun for both beginners, and extremely challenging for skilled players. This game will not work for button-mashers. Each fighter has different strengths and weaknesses, and it is up to you to exploit them. The create-a-fighter feature is also one of the best I've seen, and is certainly better than UFC Tapout 2's. You can create custom combos, punch for punch, kick for kick, choke for choke. Also new to the game are two new fighting positions which include the standing clinch and the stand & down position in which one fighter scoots around on his behind on the ground as the other fighter stands over him, and both are able to deliver strikes/holds from either position. One of the coolest things that I appreciate is that if you time an opponent's attack perfectly, you can counter with a punch or a kick that can end the fight instantly, regardless of how much health the other guy has. This feels like a real fight, and each bout feels like a tug of war. This is a must for TRUE mma fans, but not the arcade fans.
Enough.

A avid fan of Pride will 'eventually' love this game. The translation from real-life to a game is incredibly complex. At first glance Pride FC is pale. Graphics could be sharper, limited special moves, limited creativity. However, once you learn the right combination for the fighters you can kick serious ... Takes about an hour to grasp the basics, a lil more to master it on easy level. Although it's fun to have Igor lay the smackdown, replay value is limited. Even though I'm a fan, I wish I bought used. If you never heard of Pride, UFC or MMA just pass it by.

Sometimes I wonder if THQ cares about making video games anymore. Its been a long time since they did UFC on playstation 1 and not much has changed. The worst part is the control. While the buttons react alot better then in past fighting games, the button scheme is a mess. This is the same problem they have had with the Smackdown series. Its difficult to remember what direction to push a button when your moving 360 degrees around the ring. I wish they had tried something with the controls like the wrestling games they made for Nintendo 64.
On the upside you get alot of popular fighters to choose from including Sakuraba, Ken Shamrock, Gary Goodridge and Royce Gracie. The graphics are good, but a bit too cartoonish. There is a grand-pre(tournament) mode included to make things more fun. Also included is a create a fighter mode that is pretty good. What I dont understand is how you can only create a 6"4 fighter, but there is a 6"11 fighter in the game. The camera angle is a pretty nice overhead view!
heres my ratings 1(worst) to 5(best)
Sound 3.5(no announcers during the fights)
Graphics 4(they are clean but a bit cartoonish)
Fun Factor 3.5(these fights can be more frustrating then fun)
Replay value 3(you have to be a real PFC fan to keep this)
Controls 3(the reaction is improved, but still frustrating and
non involving)
THINGS THEY NEED TO IMPROVE ON THE NEXT Pride FC
1.)they need to add cuts and bruises to fighters as the fights progress...
2.)The controls need improvement. Submissions should wear you down a bit before you submit so quickly. Reversals happen way too much.
3.)A better create a fighter mode. Its so dissapointing not being able to create a guy bigger then 6"4.
