As a series Devil May Cry started and peaked with the original Devil May Cry video game for the PS2. Devil May Cry 3 and DMC 3: Special Edition follow the same general formula as the original game. Plenty of combat laden areas and cool looking weapons, a hero and an antagonist seeking power. The storyline of the series has never been the main focus and that is apparent in this game. Characters are brought in almost at random and with cloudy reasoning for their motivations.

What has always set the DMC games apart from the rest is the action packed sequences and boss battles. While DMC 3 has plenty of both you'll end up lamenting purchasing the game due to it's definitively tired controls, abysmal voice acting, broken camera system and poor storyline.

In deciding to make DMC 3 a prequel to DMC, Capcom presents a much younger version of Dante. In an effort to project the younger version Capcom also made him somewhat immature. While you may argue that this decision is appropriate you'll quickly realize in playing the game that Dante resembles a hyperactive adolescent boy. The sequences in between combat are laughable as any time Dante opens his mouth it's an embarrassment to the talented folks at Capcom.

More than any other complaint - the terrible controls, broken camera system, dated formula - it is the voice acting that prevented me from liking the game. The script is cheesy at times and the voice actors are always unbelievable. Stay away.

good but still...

same game.. another game... ?? Devil may cry 3, I must agree, was one of the greatest game to be released on the ps2. I enjoy so much the original that i couldnt live without it. i decided to buy this new version which everyone was very exited about. I must say i was disappointed. Okay yeah i know vergil is cool and this new bloody palace is interesting too, but the major change is the difficulty level. for better and worse, this game is MUCH MORE easier than the original Devil May Cry 3. Come on the original was hard at first (unreasonably hard....) but after the second boss, everything just becomes easier. And FOR ONCE bosses are challenging. Don't tell me that you like easy games i don't believe you. They took off the reason why a liked so much this game, it was challenging. and who cares of the optional stuff if the game itself is desapointing. and the "new boss" yeah yeah... my 6 year old sister could have killed him without any difficulty. In cased you didn't realised it, i really enjoy the original a lot better than this special edition. well anyway you're the money owner, do what you want but i really suggest you the original version.

Not That Great

This game is highly overrated. There were some fun moments, but other games in this genre are superior. In addition, the game is hard to the point where it's not enjoyable, especially with cheap bosses and lack of precise & timely reactive control to beat them.

Graphics - They are ok and the level design is actually pretty impressive. However, compared to God of War and Ninja Gaiden Black, it falls short. Cut scenes are acceptable, but dated- especially comparing to PS2-only titles like God of War and Metal Gear Solid 3. The voice-acting is exceptionally difficult to listen through.

Sound - Sound effects are good, but cheesy heavy metal score is 1980s corny. Again, God of War stomps on DMC3 in this area.

Gameplay -This is where the game is the most dissappointing. Although God of War was easy, there were reasons for that - one of which were controls that were tight. Let's not even bring Ninja Gaiden Black into the equation. NGB was super hard as well, but the controls were extremely tight. I recently played NGB again to make sure I was comparing fairly to DMC3 and I validated the fact that DMC3 is stupid-hard because the controls are not tight enough. NGB steps on DMC3 in this area. Simple examples of where DMC3 falls short is not being able to roll out of the way-forward or back, but only side to side. This has a huge negative impact later in the game when you are trying to get of the way of cheap bosses. Instead of rolling out of the way you jump up right in the way of one of their huge cheap life-stealing strikes. Another dissapointing issue is there is no blocking functionality, again just plain cheap. Ironically, the non-boss characters are over-the-top easy in DMC3. There is no real balance to the game.

Overall: I recommed renting the game, it is at least worth that, but I wouldn't recommend purchasing it unless you had a lot of time on you hand to get over the steep learning curve to beat bosses later in the game and also the patience to deal with the lack of control that has a negative impact later in the game.

I totally loved this game. The graphics were great, the voice work was outstanding. Dante really cracked me up with his wise cracks and Virgil, well, his voice I just found sexy. Yes, this is a femal writing this review, don't worry.
Game play is really easy. There is no multi button actions you need to do, just slice and dice your enemies, aquire awesome new weapons, and defeat your own brother.
All I can say is this game is one of my favorites, the only thing I don't like is that you have to customize your weapons before each mission. And there wasn't enough red orbs to power up your weapons. Other than that, I'd rate this game almost perfect.

Best yet in the Devil May Cry series...

The first DMC was a solid game. The second one took a slight step back. This latest installment takes a giant leap forward.

DMC3 takes the best aspects of the previous two games and molds them all together in an awesome package.

The graphics and movies are beyond stunning, the gameplay is as fast and difficult as ever, the weapons have that cool feel to them, and the music rocks.

The thing i love about about this Special Edition is that it caters to every gamer out there. Theres easy modes, hard modes, cheats, new costumes, new characters, and gameplay 'styles' that would satisfy anyone. There is a ton of variety to this game and everything is balanced and solid.

Though the one thing that disappointed me was Vergils story... or lack there of.
Vergils game is basically a carbon copy of Dantes. No new levels or anything. Playing Vergils game is like playing Joachims game in Castlevania Lament of Innoncence. You will know what i mean if youve played that game...

Still, DMC3 is the greatest action/adventure title out there for the PS2. Even God of War cant touch the variety, challenge, and gameplay of this. If you want a thoroughly satisfying action rampage with a ton of replay value and unlockables than look no further.

Good Game

I really liked this game, it's kind of hard thou, with combos and stuff, I'd like this game to be more like God of War, in the camera aspect, sometimes in this game you cant see your enemy, in GOW the right analog stick is used to roll, and the camera is nicely positioned in the way that you always see your enemy. But why am I complaing? this game rocks really!

This is what fun is all about. This game is one of the PS2's finest. The action is fast, but not overwhelming. Not only that, but the action is actually fun (unlike a certain god of war's game). Yes, it's hard. But there's this thing called easy mode (its only truly easy on the special edition). This game just oozes cool, from the cutscenes to the weapons to everthing else. It's also, at times, funny. How often do you find a game thats intentionally funny (other then Timesplitters and Monkey Island)? This game is better than God of War (a game which many compare with Devil May Cry) on every level but the graphics. The graphics are fine, but God of War has fairly better graphics. You can also read my God of War review. Bottom line is, if you have so much as an ounce of fun in you, this is the game for you.

As If the Original Devil May Cry 3 Wasn't Good Enough!

Devil May Cry 3 was one of the best games of 2005. The only thing that kept some people away was the extreme difficulty of the game. Still, if you didn't wimp out, the game was fantastic. Now there's a special edition out, and it's one of the greatest gifts CAPCOM has ever given the Devil May Cry fans.

Since this review assumes you're all familiar with the universe of Devil May Cry 3, I suppose the only thing I really want to do here is tell you about what's new. Why should you buy this versin of Devil May Cry 3 over the original?

First things first, this game is easier than the original Devil May Cry 3. This is obvious by the new continue system that's been introduced. Before you had to get yellow orbs that were particularly expensive, and so they came on a limited basis. And then you'd run out of yellow orbs and have to play through a brutal level all over again. The new continue system pretty much ignores the yellow orbs and lets you continue from check points regardless of how many yellow orbs you have. If you have a gold orb, though, you can start right from where you died. If you did like the original yellow orb system you can still do that, but the average gamer will find the unlimited continues welcome.

The difficulty of the game, as noted above, is easier. If you didn't know, the original Devil May Cry 3 given to American gamers was much harder on the "normal" difficulty setting than in Japan. This is because "Normal" mode for America was actually the japanese "Hard" mode. It's fixed here, and it's fairly noticeable. There's also an easy mode to unlock (if you die a few times) and a "Very Hard" mode. Don't be fooled by "Very Hard" mode, though. It's virtually playing the original Devil May Cry 3. With those unlimited continues, however, I'm sure you'll note the game is still easier on these harder difficulty levels.

The best new feature is the ability to play as Vergil, Dante's evil brother. In the original Devil May Cry 3 you'll note he was lightning fast, and had a few devastating attacks. They're now all at your disposal!

You have to unlock Vergil, however. Either by completing the game as Dante once, or having a save file from the original Devil May Cry 3 on your memory card.

Playing through the story as Vergil is fun, but not nearly as exciting as Dante's. For one, all the cutscenes aren't included. Vergil gets his own introduction which makes you think he'll actually have a story. He doesn't. He just plays through Dante's levels (which was to be expected) but with no real purpose for doing it. At times it feels like it was a thrown in extra (a throwback to the unlockable character Sparda in the first Devil May Cry). So there's no continuity to his story. And it's really strange to be fighting Vergil while playing as Vergil. Why not fight Dante? It's fun to play as Vergil, but it would've been really cool if they'd given him his own story. We know CAPCOM can give each character their own scenarios (seen in Mega Man X4 and done especially well in Resident Evil 2).

There's a hidden boss... a jester, who is, compared to the other bosses, way too easy. Dante or Vergil can fight him, but you'll scratch your head wondering where the difficulty went against this thing.

The combat system of Devil May Cry 3 was gold. The fans knew it, and obviously CAPCOM knows it too, because there's a "Bloody Palace" unlockable which is just a fancy way of saying "Survival Mode." It's you pitted up against various foes. There are 9999 levels in this place, and you can choose to advance by either ten floors or one-hundred floors. It's time consuming and fun, although only hardcore fans will make it through the whole thing. You might run into one of the challenging bosses as well. As with Vergil Mode, you have to either complete the game first, or have save data from the original version.

There are some more extras. A turbo mode which allows you to speed up the gameplay (imagine juggling now?), a theater mode which allows you to view all the cutscenes in the game, there's an art gallery and there are costumes you can unlock for both characters.

Really, this is worth while. Some extras feel a little tacked on at times, but for the most part this isn't like getting some crappy "director's cut". It's like getting your favorite movie in a special edition DVD. It's packed full of extras!

The Good
+The graphics are still good
+The music is also still good
+The difficulty level has been fixed
+You can play as Vergil
+Survival Mode for those who love the combat system
+The combat system is just fantastic
+Art galleries, theater modes and other extras
+Turbo Mode is just fun to watch!
+New Boss

The Bad
-New Boss isn't all that exciting
-For hardcore Devil May Cry 3 gamers, the difficulty may feel like it's reduced too much
-It would've been really cool if Vergil had his own scenario

BEST game for Playstation 2

This is an action/combat/adventure game. If you like God of War, Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil, Castlevania, Ninja Gaiden and/or Onimusha, you will love this game. Very little stupid action platform puzzle in this game, hooray! The camera is somewhat adjustable but it could be better. The background rotates and feels dynamic. 10000 times better than the original Devil May Cry or Player May Cry which was basically a 2-D game with 3-D graphics, pretty much like Double Dragon or Golden Axe IMO. The camera zooms in and out beautifully, you feel like you are in the game UNLIKE God of War. In God of War when you walk further into the screen the characters shrink and get smaller.

The great Devil May Cry 3 is finally a greatest hit. The new low price is nice, also the game is NOT the same as the ORIGINAL, there are tons of new stuff!

The graphics, detail, and motion are fantastic. It looks like a high quality XBOX game. A very high quality POLISHED game. Cool cut-scenes, dope enemies, great bosses. Everything is great. Some people say this game is too hard but its not. Any classical trained video gamer will have no problem. Those people who got turned off by this game are expecting to finish the game with button smashing the whole time. This game requires some skill.

Overall A MUST BUY for all PS2 Players.
