Oh! The Humanity!!!

To those of you who are thinking about buying this game pay attention to the next sentance. Compare your expectations of this game to the arrival of the Hindenburg at Lakehurst N.J.
I for one had high hopes. I enjoyed the first MOH even though it was a bit simple. And I felt that with the PS 2 engine backing up the latest installment I would see considerable improvement across the board. WRONG!!
My first clue should have been the review emphasis on the graphics and sounds, but not much on the handeling. Paying no heed to that I bought the game the second I saw it in a store. That was a waste of (money). I could have rented it for(less), beat it with time to spare, and be less disapointed than I am now.
REALISM! That's a word I saw several times while I followed the development of this game in magazine articles. REAL looks. REAL sounds. REAL music. REAL weapons. We'll here's my take on the thing that REALLY counts in a game. The REAL playability.

Levels about as explorable as walking from one end of a pipe to the other. Even in "open country".

Germans that start shooting at you before you even look around the corner.

Multiple head shots to drop a bad guy. (With a .30-06, yea right)

Tossing a grenade into a room only to find that after it goes off everyone in there is just fine and ready to light you up.

Dropping someone with a suppressed pistol and immediatly taking fire from enemies so far away you can't even see them with the sniper rifle.

Seeing bad guys standing half way in a wall.

Riding in the back of a vehicle, but you can't crouch, so you get hosed by every yuckapuck out there.

Clearing out a dead end room or ally and then having to deal with six or eight more Germans coming from said place.

Seeing bad guys appear in front of you right out of thin air.

Putting a perfect head shot on someone only to discover that nothing happens because you are to far away for the game to let you engage them.

Couple all of these features to an aiming system that is even worse than the PS 1 version (expect to take 4-6 hits before you get your sights on target) and you have a game that will make you want to choke every one involved with it's creation.

I could spend hours bashing this game but since space is limited let me try to wrap this up.

If you want to fight in a tunnle against psychic Nazi's that can beam in from the Enterprise you will love this game.

For those of you that want a good FPS game get Red Faction. For a realy good FPS get Half Life (steath counts and it makes you think).

If you can read this thank you for checking out my whole review. Remember. If we settle for crap that is all they will make. Expect more from your games!

Excellent FPS

Medal of Honor Frontline lands you in the role of Lt. James Patterson. Your missions will take you from the beaches of Normandy to hijacking a Ho-IX jet plane. You will have eighteen different weapons to help you along the way. The level designs are very good and each level has a different feel to it. The atmosphere and wide variety of missions is what really pulled me into this game.

The graphics most of the time look spectacular. Unfortunately a few times it did get choppy. The controls are completely customizable. There are several default choices or you can program each button individually. The sound effects and score are excellent and in Dolby Digital. To bad its not 5.1 though.

From the opening level I was hooked on this game. I could not stop playing. I found only two problems with this game. The first is that you cannot adjust the sensitivity of the analog controls. This isn't a major thing but it did take awhile to get used to. The second is that there are no multiplayer options. The game is not really that long and you should be able to go through it in a couple days easily. But the challenge is to get all the medals and that should keep you busy for a while. I think this is one of the top ten games available on PS2. All fans of first person shooters should pick this one up.

The good and the bad

THE GOOD:

1. Amazing sound effects (bullets flying past, solid explosions, authentic German-speaking SS soldiers

2. Historical accuracy (except for the final missions). You can re-enact the storming of the Normandy beach, the Battles in Holland throgh countryside and ruined cities, and you can fight alongside other US and UK troops. The weapons are authentic to the WW2.

3. The graphics are rather good for a first-person shooter

THE BAD:

1. Impossible to hit enemies near walls-- the bullets just hit the air and the nazis turn around and shoot at you. (of course, they never miss)

2. More linear than a roller coaster ride. This is the most linear start-to-finish FPS I have ever played.

3. Enemy soldiers do not always "die" when shot at very close range, even with weapons that could put a hole through the engine block of a Chevy.

4. MANY MANY MANY graphical glitches. You can walk throgh certain NPCs, enemies that fall from heights after being shot will sometimes freeze there, headfirst on the ground, with their legs flailing wildly

5. no blood or gore of ANY kind. If we want to show how horrible war is, show the horrific results of death on the battlefield.

Probably Better on the PC

First person shooters are made for the PC. They work so much better. Controlling, being able to save at any point, etc.

Still, I picked up MEDAL OF HONOR: FRONTLINE for the PS2.

The controls aren't too bad. It took a while to get used to them, but then it got fairly manageable.

And, the first few levels are a lot of fun. Beginning with D-Day, and following the campaign across France.

But, the levels then get increasingly longer and, at times, VERY frustrating.

Maybe it is just me, but I don't have much fun playing a level that takes 20 minutes to complete, with no save points along the way so that if you get killed at the 19 minute mark, you have to replay the entire game to get to that point again, only to be killed again, and again, and again, at that same point. Isn't that just a waste of time? On a PC, you can save right before that last battle, to figure out what to do without wasting all that time just getting to that point.

I enventually just gave up on the game in those later levels and played the rest in God mode. The game WAS fun, but with the levels being so big, and no mid mission save points, it is basically just a big time waster.

So, it is a fairly entertaining game, but also incedibly frustrating.

another ps2 legend....

This is one of the best games i have ever seen on the PS2. Remember all the ps2 legends like GT3, GTA3, Meta Gear Solid 2, and all the other awesome games that cruddy microsoft or nintendo havent stolen yet? Well, this is one of them. I think the only reason some of these "not so smart" *cough* people who gave the game a 2 or 3 was because they didnt realize that this was a REALISTIC WAR GAME, not one of those shoot-em-ups like quake or unreal. this game takes place in WWII. If you are a huge shoot-em-up fan and think this game is one of them, ur badly mistaken. Other weirdos complain about the sound or the graphics. PAY NO ATTENTION TO THEM. The graphics in this game were the best i have seen in a long time for the ps2. I dont know how to describe it, you'll have to rent it and find out. The sound is very rich and well done. When you hear the planes bombing, the soldiers firing, and the tanks booming, and with the incredible sound quality of this game, it makes you think you really are in WWII. Remember at the end of allied assualt, it began on d-day, well frontline begins right on D-Day(I think the d-day mission is the best.) I have a lot of fun just playing the first mission on hard to make the game almost real, and try to see what it was really like in WW2. Trust me, If you buy this, you will NOT regret it.

Private Ryan Meets Band of Brothers Meets You

Dreamworks really went the extra mile with the latest "Medal of Honor" franchise release. Opening on D-Day, you storm Normandy in a mission that is incredibly faithful to the opening sequence of Saving Private Ryan.
You're still 1LT Patterson, and the game makes references to missions completed in the previous title, giving it a sense of continuity that doesn't feel forced.
Here's a quick summary of what's changed from the previous titles:
1. Interactive environment: As opposed to facing just differently armed/attired enemies, you must face artillery, mortar, and tank fire. There's even one sequence where you can hitch a ride where you tear through narrow European streets taking potshots at German soldiers. At another point you must engineer a (nonviolent) distraction to meet up with a resistance fighter that is truly amusing. All around you, things happen that you might miss (a submarine exploding, aircraft strafing a bunker) that is simply there to create a more realistic environment.
2. Teammates: While the game no longer has a two-player option, it does have you working alongside American forces who often provide mission updates verbally
3. Talking to HQ: Because the game is more complex, it can give you guidance on what to do courtesy of "updates from HQ".
4. More complex combat: The enemies are smarter, and often take shots at you from all around. Thus, weapons that weren't too useful before (like the sniper rifle) are invaluable. Also, it may take a few moments to locate the source of fire, which is pretty realistic.
What's stayed the same:
1. Same rather simplistic first person shooter controls.
2. Same linear plot development--although it's not that forced.
3. You're still killing Nazis, Nazis, and more Nazis!

The best PS2 shooter yet, perfect for history buffs and patriots.
You finish each sequence glad that you didn't have to live it, and with respect for those who did.

Addictive, certainly fun, but annoying and frustrating at the same time

As I approach 40 years of old, I shudder with the appropriate self-loathing.

I was THAT parent. You know the type. The type that stands with their microbrew in hand, leaning against their Subaru, decked out in Eddie Bauer clothing, espousing such great holier-than-thou prophesies as, "My children will NEVER play video games. I will NEVER allow them in MY house."

Well we all know those proclamations rarely last.

After finding this in my son's collection- looking for something to try after winning my fifth National Title with EA's NCAA FOOTBALL- I finally beat the 19th and final level after 5 months.

Again, understand, I am not an expert on gaming and perhaps don't have the appropriate frame of reference to provide an expert opinion. All I can do is react to this product from a personal level.

I found the graphics fine, the sound effects and music excellent and the plot lines captivating. The 19 levels lead the player from D-Day through Arnheim Bridge and up through September of 1944. In the process the player takes out Machine Gun bunkers, U-Boats and their holding pens, frees towns, blows up trains and ultimately steals a flying wing.

The controls are relatively easy to master, the weapons fun and varied to manipulate ( I wish the shotgun was availble on more levels). The violence not graphic (no blood, exploding bodies and the like- it is at the level of a John Wayne WWII pot boiler) and the detail of the settings well rendered.

My major beef is that the levels often take too long to play (44 minutes is way too long to spend punching controls). Not being a skilled player, it took me quite a bit of time to get through a level. The frustrating and annoying thing being that if I "died" at toward the end of a lengthy level, I would have to go way back to the begining when I started over. So much for honey do's at times!

All in all, this is a fun, appropriately addictive game.

Excellent game but same AI and layout problems

Let me start by saying I think that the Medal of Honor series are my favorite games for the Playstation, being a huge WWII buff. I bought Frontline the day it came out, and it is a fantastic game, but I was a bit disappointed overall. The sound continues to be a great strength of the series, but the graphics are very similar to the last 2 MOH games. They are definitely better, but with the PS2 I was expecting more fluid movement. Also, I was hoping for a little more realism out of this one, but it still has the same problems as the last one--Germans stay standing and continue to fire after being shot in the chest or don't notice a bullet whiz by their ears, they catch and hold onto grenades while still firing, and seem to have no military training outside of returning fire (they never try to lay down a base of fire then flank you, they are very predictable in their movements, etc.) On top of this, the game is fairly easy to beat in a short time, and there is no multi-player, which was half the fun of the other ones. Don't get me wrong, I love this game and the series (and look forward to the next one), and I'd recommend anyone to get this game. But be advised that it is basically the same as the first one except it has a better look and sound to it--this is not an ultra-realistic game but well worth the price. For more WWII info: ...

Playstation's Best FPS

If you like first-person shooters, this game is a must-buy. If you are a WWII buff, this game is a must-buy. If you like fun games, this is a must-buy. EA Games has made yet another great sequel to the original Playstation game, this time with a major graphics upgrade on the PS2.

Frontline continues the story of Lieutenant Jimmy Patterson, following some of the major battles of World War II. You'll storm Omaha Beach, sneak onto a U-boat, and seize the Nijmegen bridge. This is probably the most historically accurate video game ever made.

Before I get to the gameplay itself, I have to say that the graphics, sound and control are top notch. The scenery and the sound effects are so realistic that you'll forget that you're actually sitting in front of your TV. You'll also find that the controls are pretty simple once you get used to them. Your controller options are virtually limitless since you have several configurations in addition to your own customized configuration. If you've played the other Medal of Honor games, you'll probably find yourself preferring the classic MOH controls. The only problem that really stands out is that climbing ladders is a lot more difficult than it should be.

The gameplay in Frontline definitely does not disappoint. You will be presented with a variety of different objectives throughout the game, and change your strategy accordingly. In most cases you'll find yourself on solo missions, but there are times when you are providing cover fire for other soldiers, or joining other groups of soldiers for full-on battles. You will become familiar with plenty of German and American WWII weapons, including sniper rifles, grenades, pistols and machine guns.

I have only two complaints about this game. First, there is no multiplayer mode. I know there has never really been a solid multiplayer game for the Playstation, but it would have been nice to at least see an attempt. Also, my biggest complaint is that the levels are quite long. Nothing is more frustrating than spending close to an hour working on a level just to die at the end and have to start all over again. It would have been nice to have a few save points in each of the levels.

These negatives aside, Frontline definitely fulfilled all the expectations of the faithful Medal of Honor fans. Whether you're new to the series or have played all of the previous games, you will enjoy hours of fun playing through this game.

Loved the game despite some drawbacks

This is the first FPS game I've ever played, and I really enjoyed playing it. The storyline and missions are engaging, level of difficulty is good (sometimes too difficult), and the weapons are very realistic. Since I have never played MOH on a PC, I can't really comment on some of the complaints other reviewers here seem to have, but I have had no problem taking aim and shooting down the bad guys. Most of all, I think I liked the human/realistic aspect of this game particularly coz I'm not a big fan of the sci-fi FPS games where you're shooting down demons (can't stand the gore in those games...but that's just me). As for the drawbacks, well there are some major ones:
(i) no save points during a mission which becomes very frustrating as you progress to increased levels of difficulty,
(ii) very lengthy game, which can be good or bad depending on your preference, but at some points in the game, all I cared about was completing a mission rather than trying to get a gold. One positive of the length is that once you complete the game, you can play it again and you'll still enjoy it...it retains its "newness" factor moreso than other shorter games.

All said, the game is a LOT OF FUN!!
