I bought this game [...] and after a few hours of play time, if it wasn't for the image distortion, and graphic-lag, and the fact that the game itself is basically a hodge-podge collection of freeware/payware train setups ("For the entire route go to "blahblahblah.com/co.uk/org" for [...], and the fact that this so-called content is supposed to be FREE (according to the package cover) it might actually be fun.
If you set the session to use Dial-control then it literally eliminates any sense of realism because you feel like you're sitting on the floor with a switch in your hand and if you set it to use the actual controls then actually maintaining smooth operation is somewhere between difficult and impossible.
This game does NOT perform as advertised and I would not recommend it to anyone. If you're looking for a decent train simulator, I recommend Microsoft Train Simulator program, you should be able to find it here or on the marketplace.

Recent versions of the game have shipped with the wrong serial number in the packaging, obviously a manufacturing issue. Amazon sent me two copies, but both had identical problem. Merscom web page says to send them email and they will send a valid serial number, but repeated attempts to contact company over the past month have not been answered.

I love Train Sims,(Plane and Truck sims too!)But this one here is fun...
If you like to just drive the train, Go get Microsoft Train Sim., But if you want to just do your own thing,(Working the train yard,Choose your own loads, ect) Then Trainz is what you need. Plus its a Load and Leave.
No C.D. to hunt up if you want to play
What? We don't have any American trains that are worth while?

Sometimes I wonder about games such as this. The designers seem to think that the only routes worth having are European or British. Perhaps if I were European or British I might think so too, but I'm not and I happen to like American routes. What about our great ones? Chicago, Burlington and Quincy. Rock Island. Southern Pacific with their great Sunset and Daylight routes. Baltimore and Ohio. New York Central. All these get short shrift when it comes to railroad sims.
I think I just got out of the railroad sim business. No more for me.

Here we have an imitation railroading experience that reminds me of the days when I had an H-O model railroad layout. The main difference is that the various equipment pieces were very accurately detailed in my models, not so in the game software. With Trainz there seems to be a lack of realism in both the interiors of the various locomotive cabs and in the exterior illustrations. One engine cab is totally bereft of controls, guages, and other detailing. The steam locomotive sounds are a big disapointment as they are neither realistic nor even timed to the rate of speed of travel; same with diesel locos. In addition the software contained many "glitches" (freeze-framing, unresponsive to inputs at times, etc.) that I was unable to adjust out with my computer. I have to assume they were a problem with the game software. The one advanage with this game is that it is interactive with other gamers with the same software thru the internet, but overall rather disappointing.

This game is sooo hard and confusing to play. They lamest thing about this game is that the people at the train station don't even move!It takes for ever to learn how to play!!Plus most of the time you don't even get to drive the train it drives it for you. Also it has 5 disks that you have to load on your computor for it to play and it takes like 45 minutes to load.THIS GAME IS SOOOOO LAME!!!!!

This is a simulator. If you like model trains you should love it. The tracks and trains on the disk are fine and the ones you can order to go with it are great. Almost all of the download able content has problems but most of them work, may have areas showing wireframe but still usable. You can even upload your favorite track for others to use if you so wish. I found myself sitting here "messing" with it for eight hours at one sitting so yes it is very addictive.
