JUST 2 WORDS: ACTION-SATISFACTION !!!

Hey friends,
it's the Reverend again with a spotlight on Killzone.

Killzone takes you on a military thrill-ride in the far future of mankind. Interstellar travel and technological improvements in terms of terra-forming have made planetary civilization in distant regions of space possible. We have finally reached the stars!

But fortunately things don't go as planned with a bunch of Hippies merrily smoking pot on Alpha Centauri 3 or Wikka-witches happily celebrating the discovery of "Mother earth II" as you might think.
Nope, ladies and gentlemen, there's no peace in this universe. There's a whole war out there, to be precise. I said: "fortunately", because fortunately for the gamer this gives us plenty of things to do that we could never do in a peaceful universe - such as - err - blowing virtual-reality-enemies to shreds for example.

And yes, a mighty and worthy enemy they are, the evil Helghast. Think: "Nazis in space" and you get the idea - they even have a leader reminiscent of that crazy Austrian in the 1940s, only difference: even Hitler would probably be jealous of this guy's performance in front of the Helghan audience! The Helghast were humans once, who reached a distant solar system and settled on the planet Helghan, an inhospitable world, which took them years to turn into something remotely habitable. The catch: unbeknownst to their scientists an alien chemical in the air changed their appearance as well as their attitude over the years, turning them into exactly that bloodthirsty idiot bunch of militaristic scum that makes a great enemy outside of contemporary Muslim terrorist groups (you're next as soon as we're done with the Helghast!!! :-) ). Figures, that one day the Helghast return from an interstellar picnic and, happening to fly past a peaceful planet, use this opportunity to introduce themselves to this world and re-educate its inhabitants with military subtlety (read: shoot everyone in sight).

Guess which side you're on? You're a winner! It is your destiny to kick some Helghast butt and chase them back to wherever they came from!!!

To tell you the truth: fortunately the story is being told much better and much more intense than I told it here (just to cheer you up a little). In fact, the game is very story-driven and sports plenty of cool narrative, conversations, banter among the main characters and a well thought-out plot! Especially for a 1st person shooter this is a big plus! Once you've seen the intro movie with its aggressive, militaristic attitude you'll have enough adrenaline boiling in your body to grab the closest gun and go fight! On screen, dummy! Don't get confused here, ok?

The main character is Jan Templar, a soldier, working for the ISA (International Space Alliance - or was it: Incompetent Space-marine Ass-clowns?). Whatever - you're the good guy. Over time you will gather more allies, who finally form a little platoon around you. Whenever a new character joins your team you will be able to choose from any of these accumulated characters on the following level(s). Whomever you choose, you'll be point-man while the other ones follow you as AI controlled comrades.
Jan is an all-round talent handling most weapons with ease and also being agile enough to climb. Luger is a female character, think: sneaky-stealth-kill-from-behind-kinda-girl, but she can't wield the big guns. Rico is the heavy weapons specialist, think: brawns - and finally: Hakha, a half-Human-half-Helghast hybrid with special Helghast abilities such as hacking Helghan computers or remaining undetected by the enemy's defense systems.
The good news: your choice of characters actually changes gameplay a lot! In some cases it unlocks completely different side-missions and side-objectives within the levels that you would not be able to experience with a different character! For instance: a normally linear mission will suddenly confront you with a blocked door if you play as Luger. You will have to use her to crawl through a ventilation shaft, go behind enemy lines and open the door from there: talk about using her infra-red vision, stealth kills with a knife and sniper rifle in order to avoid confrontations since she's a weaker character in open battle.

The story around these 4 characters unfolds in very well executed cut scenes. You will care for these marines so much that you just can't stand it when your 3 comrades get shot at and scream for help - even though you know that they are invulnerable (thank God) and won't die on you in a firefight.

Talking of which: the action is superb! If you crossbreed 2nd world war intensity with the heavy military weapons from ALIENS, you'll get a picture of the action.
The story unfolds on different planets (including an orbital space station) and in numerous diverse settings. From the bombed-out concrete jungle of a city slum to towering skyscrapers and office buildings, beautiful parks (all with floating lotus blossoms), research facilities, military bases, underground factories, shuttle bays, beaches, jungles, snow-capped mountains, subway-tunnels and whatever else you ask for!!!
Most levels have a decidedly post-battle feel, full of blood, destruction, decay etc. You really feel like you're there: right after the Helghan attack which left many structures, facilities and machinery ruined, damaged or in need of maintenance. The attention to detail is incredible! Killzone pushes your PS2 to the very very max. Especially in widescreen mode you will see tiny details and features like in no other game. Think: photo-realistic graphics with high density textures and no blur!
The craziest thing is that even though the world that was created for this game is fictitious - all of the places you visit seem totally plausible. Everything makes perfect sense - like the designers had a clear vision of how a next century shuttle bay, mall, subway station or harbor would look like and how machines and devices would work. Great job!!! Where's the damned movie based on this game??!!

The weapons are just as intense. Never ever have I seen and heard more extreme and aggressive weapons in a video game! The funny thing is that I can honestly make this statement event though nothing here is new or innovative. You'll get to use sci-fi versions of contemporary firearms such as: pistol, heavy pistol, shotgun, machine-gun, shrapnel-gun, gatling-gun, rocket-launcher, grenade/mine-launcher, grenade-and-automatic-combo, sniper rifle, silenced precision pistol, knife, grenades etc.
But again: they are all absolutely believable and sound and look awesome with incredible re-load animations that must be seen to be believed! Did I mention that you can aim/zoom in with some of them and that most of them sport a second firing option, too?
Plus, you can only carry up to three weapons around at a time and have to drop one to get a different one from a fallen enemy (YEAH!!! No Rambo-junk here!!! Very realistic!)

Talk about realism: try climbing up a ladder and you'll see how your alter ego holsters the weapon and grabs the ladder. Whilst on the ladder you can pan your view around and see your own hands holding on to the rungs, climbing or sliding down (no shooting while climbing - thank you!). Your whole field of vision will move realistically when you throw a grenade or reload guns - and last but not least: whenever you mount a gun turret you will see yourself getting hold of it - or in case of a vehicle with seat: mount it, get in the seat and grab for the controls. WOOOOOOOW!!! What a thrill!
All of the above animations happen in the default 1st person view, of course, so there's no interruption to the action.

In short: the whole action is so "realistic" (as realistic as you can have it in a sci-fi setting) and so intense that you'll yell and curse out loud while shooting those mother-loving sons of witches and butt-monkeys (too avoid heavy censoring here...)!!! It feels so damn good! I found myself wanting to kill those faceless enemies more than enemies in any other shooter, where you normally start wondering after hours of play: what the heck is my problem with these guys anyway, can't we have a coffee and relax? Not so with the Helghast!

Now enough of this praise...
Let's just mention the little cons of this game, just so no one can say I'm too positive:
- unfortunately you cannot command your team-mates, they are fully AI controlled
- the great graphics come at a price: the frame-rate is not always consistent - and on the whole lower than in other games
- minor graphical glitches (only now and then) that may disturb the perfectionists among us
- minor sound glitches (only now and then) such as a missing sound of an exploding grenade due to memory restrictions whenever the level is really big or many enemies are on screen
- Rico is a little too strong in my opinion - but hey, there's the HARD setting and some weaker players may be happy about this
- Not a whole lot of enemy variety (usually different Helghan soldiers and the occasional tank and flying bot)
- Environments are not very dynamic (stages are fairly linear, not too much interaction with the environment such as: doors, elevators, machines or damage to objects) even though your weapons leave pretty holes, marks, sparks and craters where they hit
That's all the bad stuff I can find. Personally, these issues do not disturb me with the exception of the occasional missing sounds.
THE PLUS SIDE IS LARGE ENOUGH TO FORGET ABOUT `EM.
GO GET IT! THE GAME'S LONG, INTENSE AND NOW: CHEAP!

The Reverend.

Halo Killer? NOT!!

Killzone has been touted by many as the 'Halo-killer'. Halo is an FPS on the Xbox, and Killzone is one for the PS2. Firstly, this game falls short of being a 'Halo-killer'. It doesn't really live up to Halo's name in the trade of console FPS, and it's a pretty lackluster effort.

It's not really a terribly bad game, just not as polished as it ought to be. It's a pretty fun FPS, and quite a good way to kill time during some of those free afternoons you have. Online play is extremely addictive, as well.

The graphics are good, for a PS2 game. Frankly, I'd expect the PlayStation 2 to cough up blood trying to run an Xbox game so this is a pretty good effort.

The sound presentation is good as well, the story is mild but slightly entertaining. As I said, Killzone could do with a little final touch-ups and polish.

So in the end this IS an OK game, with the online play being a nice addition. However to clear it out with some stupid PS2 fanboys out there, Killzone CANNOT be compared to Halo. Halo came out two years ago, Killzone in the present. Killzone's graphics are nearly on par with Halo's but why are you comparing it with a '01 game? Compare it with HALO 2 if you dare. So really, there are much better stellar FPS out there...Halo 2 and Half-Life 2 to name a few, so if you own a PC or Xbox, forget Killzone. However if you're stuck with your PS2...dream on of beating Halo.

THIS GAME FRICKIN' ROCKS

I am a thirteen year old who just pre-ordered Killzone and recieved a demo of it. All I can say is that it is awesome. The graphics are amazing and already beat out anything on X-Box. The gameplay is superb and extraordinarily intense. The Helghast's A.I. is the best I've ever seen. Buy this game, it's an insant classic.

This game just falls FLAT on it's face

Everyone, please becareful.

We have PS2 fan boys. Please don't trick the public. People are paying $45 for this game. So please give a realistic review.
I have played through the game, and it just does not live upto the phrase Halo-beater. It is not Halo or anywhere near it.

It does have major problems, like slow downs, graphical issues, and bad AI. These in my view are the greatest let downs.
Yes, this game has been overhyped, to a degree people like myself actually found the game a chore. This game comes out 3 yrs after Halo, and I did expect it to run circles around Halo, it didn't even scratch the surface of Halo, never mind making a dent.

I know Guerilla games do not make FPS, so I cannot blame them for there first take at the FPS market.
This game reminded me of the Medal of Honour series, but the story is not as gripping as Medal of Honour, nor is it as entertaining as the series. It falls short on many fronts.

I recommend a rent on this game, before a purchase, especially as allot of you will be expecting high expectations from this game.

Be cautious and rent before you spend 45 SMACKEROONIES, or you'll end up trying to sell it on ebay like me.

you gota have it

After finally finishing this game. I can fairly say that this game is good. I mean for us PS2 folks there aren't many FPS out there. The few that we do have just dont cut the meat.

Anyway back to my review. In KILLZONE you are introduced to the Helghast, a fiercesome mutated brutes. You talk the role of Templar, a human soldier. The game is well paced and the opening scenes are great.
My only gripes are the AI, which in my view are pretty lame, a few times my own team mates were getting in my way, which ultimately caused me great pain. The enemy AI, believe me is worse. They would shoot at my team mates and then wonder off, other times they would be standing in one position and I could drop a greande and walk of briskly. The AI is bad in this game. A game of this caliber should have top notch AI. Also I seen no rag doll physis in this game, like Psi-ops. They would just fall down, huh!, this is meant to be the Halo-killer. I was expecting full rag doll physics.
The other gripe is the graphics. I mean the graphics are great on my PStwo, but the drawing and cuttings feel bad. I mean, I would walking and grass and buildings would suddenly appear out of nowhere. It just got annoying after awhile, i want to see where i am going and what situations I was in, but with the draw distance cropping up out of the blue, just got me annoyed.

The other issue was, I wanted freedom to fight the way I want when i want. It all just seemed all to repetitive at times, I was expecting huge battles, but most fighting was in small/shallow environments.
The multiplayer is better than the single player. I enjoyed this more than the single campaign. Ton's of options and was fun.

Okay, my final verdict is this game is great, but I was saddened by so many problems like AI, graphics and repetitive gameplay. I was expecting a Halo-beater. Especially that this has been in development for 4 years. But I just felt the game became a bit unpleasant as i was wishing it would surprise me, but it never did.

I rated this 2 stars, as I came out finishing it disappointed. I believe it is a mistake to hype the public, expecting a solid game that would wipe the floor with Halo. It just doesn't reach the mark, it fell far short of it.

Hopefully, the developers pick up on these issue, and make the sequel much better.

The redeeming factor is the solid online aspect of Killzone.

From High Expectations, to a shallow experience

After pretty much finishing this game. I can honestly say that this game falls short. There are so many FPS out in the market, and I would expect that Killzone would live upto the hype. Especially as everyone is calling it the HALO beater. I can honestly say it does not even come close to beating Halo.

The demo looked impressive, but the overall game just left me thinking. After many years in devlopment, I would expect developers to learn and improve on a game. This game just has some nice visuals, even then it suffers from draw distance, and clipping problems. The AI is just dumb. I mean how can a game how dismal AI. The game just gets repetitive. If this game came out 4 yrs ago, then I would have given it 5 stars. This is late 2004, it has been in devlopment for so many years. Sony, claimed this game will change our life of how we play games. I can say to some extent the is true, I now know not to expect or believe the hype.

Anyway, it isn't a bad game, I agree with the folks on amaxon.com, that it does have some fun bits. But I was hyped by this game, expecting that finally we PS2 folks have a game to stand upto the XBOX. If Sony cary on the way they are, then they will lose there loyal followers to MicroSoft.

I hope they redeem themselves on Killzone 2.

Killzone, the game that was dubbed the Halo-Killer of PS2. Well let me say it lives up to it. There is very little bad I can say about this game, in fact it's very nearly perfect.
The one thing that took me by suprise was how the game kept giving and didn't just lapse off after the second or third level and then start up again at the end (Medal of Honour). There are plenty of original events that keep happening and you never know what's going to happen next.
On top of this, the graphics are so good it actually beats the Xbox hands down. The entire graphical experience is so gritty and realistic.
Even the sounds of the gun's firing sounds like your firing an actual gun right there in your bedroom.
There are no ridiculous bright glowing colours that look more like a disco than a game, or a constant green colour that seems to cover everything because the makers thought it looked cool (cough Halo 2 cough). It's all well thought out.
Having played a variety of FPS now, espeicially given I bought an Xbox last year and they seem to be all they've got on there, I can tell you that this is the best one you will find. Nothing even comes close, so back off Halo, the new King is crowned.

Not the Halo killer the ps2 owners wanted

Killzone is the best FPS on the ps2, and thats kinda sad. While Killzone is fun to play, it has many problems that bring down the expirence.

Killzone boasts great art direction. Some locals had the opertunity to be breathtaking and the character models are verry well done. The reason I said had the opertunity to be breathtaking is because this game has the worst texture pop in and wacky view distances in a game of this generation of consoles. You walk up to a character and they look all smudgy like a N64 launch title! Its horrible. But when it pops in (you could wait a while) it looks good, if not great.

Another problem is the hit detection. Normaly in games one hit with a shotgun is enough to kill someone right? Not in killzone it isnt! You have to shoot them three to four times with it before they die! This is perhaps the most agravating thing about the game. If you are sniping, it takes three headshots to kill someone! WTF?? Then it takes one hit in the arm with the pistol to kill someone???? Need I say more??

If you take away all the glitches, it is still a fun game worth a rental.

Concept- Make the one and only Halo killer, but fail misribly

Presintation- 8.5- The Menues are nice and are simplistic. Box art is good too.

Graphics- 7.6- The indoor levels get a 9.0 cause it looks good, but the outdoor parts of the game is unbearable.

Sound-9.0- Easily the high point of the title, the ambient sounds are great, the voicovers a little corny, but otherwise great.

Playability- 8.0- It is easy to controll, but the hiit detection fricken sucks!

Entertainment- 7.7- It overall an above average game.

Replay Value- 8.0- It has good multiplayer modes, but once again, the hit detection sucks.

Ignore the Halo fanboys, this game is awesome!

I first played this game in a OPM demo months ago, and I finnaly got it a few days ago. This game is not a Halo-killer but it may be to some people. I won't even get into the story because you probably already heard it. This game has a gritty, reallistic fealing that Halo doesn't have. Some people veiw that as bad graphics, i see it a just a different style. All of the guns in Killzone are really cool, some cooler than Halo guns. The AI is also great, ussually. The only problems I saw were my teammates huddled up instead of shooting the enemies. The only oter problems were graphical, the PS2 can't make everything perfect at all times, so occasionally you will walk into a completely untextured wall and it will texturize in front of you. Dispite what the kids reveiws say, this game ain't that tough. Som parts you die at but usually because there's a guy behind you that you can't see. One thing this game has that Halo doesn't is awesome reloading and meelee animations. The camera moves around as you stuff a clip into your gun and as you beat the guy's skull into a pulp. It just feels so real, unlike Halo.
Pros:
-Gritty, realistic graphics
-Awesome guns
-Cool story
-Great reloading and melee's

Cons:
-Occasonal AI glitches
-Graphic glitches
-A few parts you could get lost at (until you find a ladder)
Overall this is a great game, one of the best FPS-ers on the PS2 and any system. And that's coming from someone who owns all systems ans both Halo's. The only thing this game needs is destructable enviornments. This game should be in the top ten FPS spots, maybe at #4...
