Buy Transworld Surf

I was really excited about this title, and went right out to buy it on first release. I am seriously dissapppointed in the lack of diversity in waves and lack of flow in the gameplay...Do not make the mistake I did. Keep Ripping. REal waves are better anyway.

Kelly is the best....to bad his game is not!!!

The bottom line is this...If you want a skateboarding game you buy THPS!!! If you want a snowboarding game you buy SSX!! If you want a surfing game you DON'T buy H30, Sunny Garcia, or now KSPS following in the footsteps of what appears to be yet another quarter pipe with some procedural textures sliding across the surface of it trying to make you believe you are submersed in an ocean!!! Maybe I am wrong and KSPS will deliver TWS caliber wave'(s), and THPS style game play. Personally I am holding out for the PS2 version of Transworld Surf.

Happy Surfing

I dont think that there is much question that this is the best surfing game out. And why shouldnt it be? The graphics are fantastic, there's plenty of options, the soundtrack is great, and there's a ton of beaches to surf.

You start out on your surf boat, with the option of several different surf modes. The career mode is clearly what most people will be interested in. You just choose your surfer, and you're off to the beaches. The gameplay will keep you busy for a while, and learning all of the moves will prove addictive. Luckily, it doesnt take as long as I had thought to master it. You travel from wave to wave after completing a specified set of goals for each particular beach (eg score 100,000 points, run over windsurfers). Even though each beach is for the most part the same, it's nice to see some variety in the setting.

I loved the cutscenes for each beach, Kelly Slater narrates a short video on each one. There is also an awesome, much longer surf video to watch from the main screen.

The main problem with this game is that the replayability is low. I conquered all of the beaches in career mode in about 5 days...after that, there isn't much left to do. I ended up returning it after I concluded that I probably wouldn't be playing it much from that point on. Overall, this game is great, but the limitations of a surfing game only warrant it as a rental.

Cool game but lacks details....

Cool game, but I lost interest quickly as
there is no season tour so you dont have anywhere
to go after achieving all of the goals - - If this
had a full world tour it would be great - - but
the noly competition with others is a few heats
and that is it...

one cannot avoid compering this game with transworld surf. myself? i enjoyed TWS much more than KSPS.
if you are a surfer you should have both but if you dont have a choice i would recomend trans world surf game.
kelly's game is slightly confusing, the graphics are not better than TWS like someone mentioned.
TWS has a better understanding of surfing, they put less tricks but their moves and tricks resemble reality at least (asides of the special tricks that are hard to pull).
in kelly game you can do everything on a wave, this makes the game a little .
again, both games are worth buying and i even wanted to give this one 4 stars (i gave TWS 5..) but with all the good reviews i thought its time to get real.

Good game

I am an avid surfer from the south pacific and I'll give my opinion from a surfer point of view. I think this game is pretty cool, but Transworld surf is better, why?

KSPS has awesome graphics, the water looks like real water, the surfers movements are fluid and real, however in this one you cannot choose what wave you want to ride, once a wave rises up you are compeled to take off and ride it. This doesn't happen in TWS, since if you want to skip an incoming wave you've just duck dive an wait for a nice one.

In KSPS it seems that the wave never ends and if you stand on the face of the wave without any kind of trick you won't lose speed and you'll be away of the barrel anyway. In TWS you have to work to gain speed in order to make some tricks.

In KSPS the waves has an excessive perfect shape (I wish the waves could be so perfect in real life)perfect hollow tube, etc, etc, however in TWS the wave has a random behaviour, you can be cutting a great wave and at any moment this closes out in one section or more, like real life.

It is very easy to perform tricks in KSPS which is good for a non surfer gamer, however I like TWS because you need to tune up your skills, if you do something wrong you'll be wiped out like real life.

If you are a real surfer I must say that I recommend both games because both are great, I prefer TWS over KSPS but this is my personal opinion

get yo' surf on dawg

Activision's 02 series may seem to drop Tony Hawk clones if you glance beyond the surface of titles such as Hoffman or even the new wakeboarding game, but Kelly Slater is one that that stands on its own 2 feet. They really spent some time on this one; and it shows...in the end, what you have is a realistic surfing game that is actually fun to play.

From a visual standpoint, this game would get a perfect 10. The waves look realistic and smooth, as does the surfing itself. No choppy or sluggish action on this effort. There are quite a few beaches to visit, although none of the goals are really all that difficult.

Sounds are good, so is the music for the most part. Basically what you would expect from Activision.

So, why not a perfect 5 star rating? Well, replay value for one. After you blow through the challenges there isn't much left. Sure, it is still kinda fun to try to bust high scores, but not much to work for to keep someone hanging on. Also, even though there are a ton of beaches to visit, it is a far cry from opening a new "level" on Hawk. Basically each beach is kind of like the one you just visited. You drop in on a big wave and do your thing. End of story.

Oh, on the plus side, there is a lot of cool surf footage to enjoy if you are into it. Each surfer and each beach has some footy, plus there is a 30 minute video which is a behind the scenes type of deal. Good stuff.

I am hearing that this game is being discontinued, so try and pick up a copy while you still can.

very impressive

Unlike the other "reviews" on this site, I have actually played this game. Just so you know.

First off, the graphics and action on Kelly Slater are TOP NOTCH. In fact flawless is the best word to describe how this game plays. The movements by the surfer, the ocean, aquatic life, sounds, etc, all mix together in one smooth package.

I don't know much about surfing as I have always leaned towards the skateboarding side of the fence, but this game is super easy to get into despite a lack of knowledge about the sport. I can only guess that the tricks are an accurate representation of what surfers these days are pulling; personally I didn't know surfers did flip tricks on their boards, but maybe they do.

All in all, if you enjoy the Hawk series of games but want a different type of challenge, then go pick up this game.

Good even for people who dont surf too
