Probably the most well balanced MMORPG. It's an awesome game, but be warned: this game takes alot of patients and time to advance. Even learning about the game is a obstacle in itself. I wouldn't recommend this game for people enrolled in any school or anyone with work that requires effort and attention.
That being said enjoy the game. It's fun and I bet it will be the last game you buy for quite a while.
And if you are buying this collection and you are brand spanking new to this game do yourself a favor and spend extra money for the guide.
Don't believe them

Listen, if you like any FF you'll like this one, heck if you like RPG's or any MMO's you'll like it!. Over 50% of the bad reviews even stated in their review something like, "I spent 20 mintes, tried it, it suxs, uninstalled it and threw it away."
It takes HOURS to get into it, if you are that type of person above, play World Of Warcraft, it'll be perfect for you. You need to get INTO this game to enjoy it, get a group of friends, meet some people, get into the flow. As others have said, the younger generation will not appreciate this game, for the most part it IS too deep for them.
Play the game a bit, at first it may appear clunky, but you have to learn the interface inside and out. Another hot topic is Graphics. Never in my lifetime have I distinguished a game's worth because of Graphics. Sure, it's a plus, but they do not make a game. I could care less about them, I still love to play Super Nintendo and Nintendo, the game's are amazing, and they have 4-8 bit characters!
Please ignore those reviews, and get this game. If you have pateince, play the game, and look deep into the game for it's worth, not cheap effects and first appearences.

For anyone that might be worried about so called "Death Marches" across this very large game world, I'm here to let you know that getting to where you are going is really quite easy once you know how. First off, as of level 20 (very easy to get to) you can earn your Chocobo License which allows you to rent a mount in any of the 4 major cities as well as at numerous outland chocobo renters. For those that progress even further, you can earn your Airship Pass which allows you to ride the magnificent flying ships from one city to another. Your destination is somewhere in the wilderness and you don't have much time to get there? Not a problem. At almost any given moment there are fellow players that will cast Teleport Spells to take you to one of 6 Telepoints around the world in the blink of an eye (Most of which charge little or nothing for the service). You can even teleport yourself to these splendid locations if you take up leveling as a White Mage. And Lastly you can even teleport to and from any of the numerous outposts in the world given that you complete a simple supply quest to them and are of a high enough level for that particular region.
Speaking as a Level 54 Thief, If pressed for time, I could make a journey from one side of the world to the other in less than 10 minutes.
So, don't let supposed travel time scare you off. This game is tons of fun and the world just keeps getting better. Come on over and have an adventure in Vana'diel. I'm sure you'll love it.
Take it from a middle aged experienced ffxi player

I have a level 75 (the highest level in the game) Beastmaster. This game is NOT for a child and quite often not a teenager. If your looking for a game for a child get something more like Mario Brothers. This game is VERY DEEP!!! I have been playing for three years and I consider myself a casual gamer in ffxi. This means I have spent around three hours or so on any day I have spare time playing it. It took me a year and a half to get to level 75 on an Advanced Job which can only be unlocked after you have a standard job to level 30.
The down side of the game is the time sink. Yet I look at it like this. If I have true spare time to waste watching TV I would much rather be in ffxi. I have not watched TV aside from occasional news and when I watch a movie with my wife in almost three years now. I find this game much more enjoyable than wondering how Chandler is doing on Friends.
The upside is the depth of the game. This game will weed out the weak gamers quickly. This was designed for strategy and intensity and yes it is complicated so you will need websites that have game info for you to review. If your a figure it out yourself person, good luck, I tried and failed.
As to controls of the game they are very easy to learn. It is not as complicated as many people say. Main menu controls are two button pushes away and you have access to every main part of your character and game. If you cant handle two buttons then you definitly do not belong in this game.
This is the best game I have ever played hands down. I typically pick up a game, figure out the basics and once I have the technique mastered its no longer any fun I drop it. Other games simply do not have the same feel or depth as ffxi contains. For people that say it is too hard I believe they were weeded out as the weak gamers that like easy shootem up games or MMO's that were designed for kids like WoW.
The game is HEAVYILY party based so you will be playing with other people 99% of the time. Unless your up for a real challenge as I was. I took the only job in the game that is possible to solo 75 levels and did just that. I soloed 75 levels of Beastmaster, talk about a challenge but it was a blast.
I highly recommend this game for anyone over the age of 20. My dad is reaching his 50's and has a level 58 Beastmaster and loves it. If a man who was blown away by being amazed at a scientific calculator years ago can handle this game I am sure the average intelligent person out there can as well.

Let me say this game will astound you. I have been playing for over 2 years. My main jobs are lvl 71 summoner, 73 black mage, 59 white mage and 56 bard. (But I've unlocked all the jobs)
I've been a FF fan for years and couldn't wait to experience this. The only downside to playing is that it takes me away from EVERYTHING else... that's not necessarily a bad thing, but if you have school, work, family events etc.... you'll be hard pressed to try and do it all without thinking... geeesh i'm only 200 to next level... where can I go next? or Oh, I really want that Knights of the Round weapon... etc
I won't go into great detail about all the jobs, that'll take wAYYYY to long... so I'll just focus on my main job. Summoner.
As a summoner in FFXI your primary responsibility in a party is to summon an avatar to fight on your side. These magical beings are imbued with special abilities and powers, some offensive, some supportive and some defensive. Soloing as a high level summoner is easy and VERY rewarding. Here is a list of the avatars you are able to summon in the game:
Carbuncle (you get this after successfully unlocking the job)
Ifrit
Shiva
Ramuh
Leviathan
Titan
Garuda
Fenrir
Diabolos
In addition to these avatars, you are also able to summon elemental spirits to assist you as well:
Earth
Fire
Air
Ice
Water
Wind
Dark
Light
Thunder
Being a summoner is one of the HARDEST jobs in the game but EXTREMELY powerful. It also ends up getting a lot of respect--earned by other players.
There are many different types of armor, weapons and accessories you can buy, quest or find in the game. You can sell your wares in your personal bizarre, to NPC stores or the local AH. You can even take up a craft. Leveling a craft allows you to create, from raw materials, your own food, items, weapons, or armor --to sell or wear. (you can even put ur signature on crafted items)
Mission wise the game is EXCEPTIONAL. There are 3 starting cities... you choose which one to align yourself with at the start, upon creating your character. You can even join a linkshell - a network or guild, to receive help from other players.
This is a great game... and I suggest EVERYONE play it if you have the time. Just be warned: It takes ALOT of time, but it is SOOOO rewarding.
Great Family Fun!

5 in our family, two parents and 3 daughters, all play FFXI online. This is a great game and we enjoy partying together and meeting new people. We have our own linkshell chat room with more than 50 people. One rule in our linkshell, No Swearing, and so far it's been great! There are wonderful people in this game and we've made a lot of friends online.
These expansion packs in one bundle for a cheap price!

I remember playing this game about a year ago on the PS2. After Spending close to $150 and waiting for about 3 hours of installing, I thought that it was well worth it. I would spend about 10 hours a day on the game. After moving to another city the connection did not work any more and I could not play it anymore. Now I know none of you care about any of this but I truly missed this game.
Now, July 2006, I return with a whole new game for the PC. Not nearly as much as the PS2 version and every little bit of it is better on the PC. Including 2 of the 3 current expansion packs is really a money savior and is definately worth buying. If you like this game and have a descent computer then don't bother getting it for the PS2. A great game all around.
Beware this is Addictive and Fun

My daughter gave me this game as a present. I was skeptical at first whether I wanted to spend time playing a game online and spend a monthly fee of $12.95 to keep it going. Three months later I'm having a blast and have gotten it for my 14 year old too. You are playing with real people in the world. I have made good friends in England, US and Japan. At times I do more typing and laughing than fighting, but that's one of the best parts. You have a friendship lists to see who is on that you want to say hi to or play with. There are Link Shells you can form or join to give you a support group and keep larger groups of friends in touch. There are also many web sites with helpful info, just search under "ffxi subject or item".
People around the world, strangers take the time to stop and help those in need. The game is designed to encourage playing with other people. It's very easy to form a party. You click that you want to party, and your name will go on an accessible list of everyone in your area, what they are playing and where they are, then you just click and invite the ones close to your level to play. Maps are available to help you find your way around and there is a compass in the lower left corner of the screen. There are classes that play well going solo too, that's how I started out. The game also has Mentors that you see occasionally that will help answer questions, guide you and will delete characters that aren't `playing nice'.
The characters are very well rounded and not one dimensional. You get to pick from several races, sizes, faces, hair and the game gives you `emotes' which you can learn to give your character it's own personality from serious to funny. There is a wide variety of clothes/armor to pick from shops in town or you can buy them from other players at Auction making each player unique. Your character can be strictly an adventurer, or they can also learn craft skills to make things to sell. All characters can learn the easier crafts, but if you want to specialize and gain in skill you must join guilds and pass tests. You can then sell your items at auction. When learning the game the controls are many, but mostly idiot proof.
My husband appreciates the fact that when my pre-menopausal hormones are raging I can go online and kick some goblin [...] instead of taking it out on my loving family. I highly recommend this game for a social outlet, frustration venting and just plain fun!
After nearly 3 years I can play this game!!!!

Final Fantasy XI was first released in the United States in 2003. I ended up buying the game when it game out that November and was looking forward to playing it. After installing it, letting the game UPDATE I was ready to go. Make a long story short my video card wasn't up to par (which I thought it was) and the game crashed.
Six months later I bought a new video card and tried to play the game again. Much to my unhappiness the copy of my game was invalid. What this means is that AFTER 3 MONTHS OF INACTIVITY NOT ONLY DOES YOUR CHARACTER BECOME INVALID BUT SO DOES YOUR REGISTRATION CODE. THERE IS NO WAY TO REACTIVATE THE GAME REGISTRATION CODE TO PLAY THE GAME ONLINE. THE ONLY WAY TO PLAY THE GAME AGAIN IS TO RE-PURCHASE THE GAME WITH A NEW GAME REGISTRATION ID. The reason that is all in bold type is because I feel any potential buyers MUST NOW THIS INFORMATION.
So with that I threw the game away and vowed never to buy it again. So low and behold the game became available to buy for $20. I bought it and the wait was well worth it. The game is really fun, honestly. Fighting isn't as tedius as others make it seem. I'm part of a Blacksmith Guild so I spend most of my time making weapons which is a lot of fun as well.
I'd definitely give it shot with the 30 days for free. I know I will be playing this game for a long time to come!!!
And I'm serious about the 3 month inactivity thing, its really not that fun to find that your game has "expired" and if no one believes me call Customer Support and they will explain it to you!
Here Goes....

Allright. I am a seasoned player of the entire final fantasy series. 8 is my all time favorite, but, however, 11 is quickly becoming my all time favorite. Just like previous reviews, the key to this game is this... TIME. Any MMORPG you play takes time. Lets face it Oblivion and World of Warcraft are some of the most simplistic MMO's Ive ever played... they were designed to attract a younger audience (13-16). All RPG's take time, and if your a RPG gamer we all know this. (especially if you're FF fans) But anyway now that I'm off my soapbox, this game is awesome! I cant express to you the amount of times Ive stayed up till 4-5 in the morning knowing full well I had to work the next day. its that engrossing. I was an Everquest player prior to purchasing this,. I also have a top-notch graphics card and the graphics are stunning... there are things ive seen in here that ive just been like.. Oh My God... that soooo cool. once you get into the game enough to do other fun missions and party with decent levels, it will be everything you ever wanted in an MMORPG... Thats A Fact..
Thank you for listening, Raine
