30 hour RPG

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 4 / 5

I can honestly say Ive never played a RPG(very few games in general for that matter) as visually stunning as FFX.

Given that I'll take Grandia II over FFX anyday of the week. The characters are better, and by better I mean not totally boring. It does disturb me how todays "RPG" has to completely spoon feed the gamer. Dragon Warrior IV was my favorite game of all time and had a huge world of bad graphics you had total freedom in at the end. Not like Grandia II or FFX which give the sickening "compass" feature...... okay Ill quit my bitching cause by the modern standard Grandia II is very good. Somewhere around FF7, though not as good as DW4 or FF3 which are my two favorite RPGs. It has an engaging story line(any of which involve religions that are exposed as total lies are okay with me) possessed characters, and funny dialogue -- I really wish they wouldnt go from having voices to not having voices from second to second-- one or the other please- otherwise its just too damn lame. I got 30 hours of gameplay-- it was worth it.

Grandia 2. The best RPG made for any system

Grandia 2 is the best RPG ever made. This game was produced by Sega originaly, so you know the graphics and gameplay will be great. This game is also very addictve. I played for 3 and a half hours non stop and 15 hours in 3 days. The plot is very interesting and has a few turns that you would never expect. This game has everything you are looking for in an RPG. If you're looking for a great game, look no further because Grandia 2 is the game for you...

A sequel that beats the original.

Grandia II is a whole lot better than I had anticipated it to be. The music, sound, and voice overs are outstanding. The graphics are breathe-taking. The battle system is unbelievable. The graphics for the spells and special moves are a marvel to behold. All in all this is a definite must buy for any RPG fan, or anybody that likes a good old fashion story of good versus evil :) Buy it, you'll like it.

Pre review based on Dreamcast

I had an old dreamcast back in the day, and this game is the SOLE reason I had it! If you enjoy true RPG's, this is the game for you. If you like psuedo hackenslash-RPG's (Diablo2) move along. Otherwise, you should know this game has ncredible depth and luster, and the story is excellent! The end is very suprising, as you are led to think in so many different ways during the game that you cannot be certain until you see. And of course, I can only assume that Sony will upgrade the game for it's new platform as they have in the past (Anyone out there remember LUNAR when it was on Sega CD? heheh). I expect this will be the best competition for Final Fantasy's new release.

GRRRREAT GAME!

I think this game is Great! I bought it [inexpensively] at a store after looking at it for a couple of monthes. Although the graphics aren't that great for a PS2 game, the battles, spells, and storyline rock! I usually buy a lot of games that I don't beat, but i can be proud to say i beat this one! It's different from most RPGs because of the battle system. You will tell your characters what to do, but its more then just attack, magic, item. You have to choose if you want to use a really strong attack that hits once, or a lesser attack that hits twice. You choose according to a sort of timer done at the bottom. It sounds very complicated, but if I can figure it out you can!! Get this game! It's great!!

An old fashioned good RPG

I rented this game to see if it was any good and it turned out to be AUWSOME! It's one of the few recent rpgs that havent sacrificed control and plot for graphics. If you like the mario RPG for super nintendo(not the poor exuse for its sequel on n64), youl like this just as much. The only problem i found was that it takes less than a week of constant playing to beat and could have been a bit more challenging. I hope you all at least rent the game and maybe buy it.

Wow, not your average RPG

The odd thing about this game is that it is deceptively normal. The combat (at first glance), items, magic, health, armor, etc are pretty much Final Fantasy type. Then it gets interesting. When you fight you actually move to your opponents, and they to you. If you don't have enough Move points you'll have to strike next turn or use magic or a bow. Initiative is a free for all, and only by watching the bars can you tell who's going to strike when. You can disrupt an attack, too, if you're fast. Every gets power moves, which are separate from magic. This all makes the battles much more interesting than FF-style combat.

But then you start to see the story emerge. There's the hero, the nice girl, and an evil/naughty girl/demon. Except that the nice girl is a bossy religious type and the hero seemingly cares only for money, is anti-religious, and has a sarcastic wit. I'm actually writing down a lot of his lines because they're so funny. Not to mention the evil girl is really cool. The plot is interesting, and hasn't been too repititious, except for a slight tendency of some characters to emphasize you should live you life to the fullest, not be hateful, etc etc and all that warm, fuzzy stuff.

This game is very fun to play, whether you're talking to other characters or bashing monsters. I'll close with a quote by Ryudo, the main character: "I don't recall 'hunting down reawakening God of Evil' as being part of my job description."

I liked it, but it had the worst ending ever.

This game was pretty amusing.

Had some funny moments, good costumes, generic characters you've come to fall in love with (Millenia and Elana or basically Tenchi's Ryoko and Ayeka).

Enjoyed the scenery, don't recall the gameplay too strongly, but that didn't stop me from beating it.

I give it 4 stars overall because remembering this game gives me a sense of euphoria and quaintness, which are two things a game should always leave you with.

But I wish I didn't beat it.
The ending was terrible.

MILLENIA: I think I see what I have to do now.
(Sprouts wings)

ELANA: What...about me?

MILLENIA: Don't you get it by now?

ELANA: Of...of course (sprouts wings).

That's around the point I was a bit sad.
That's just as bad as the cheesy ending in Jade Coccoon.

Addictive gameplay and a nice plot, but the dialogue . . .

The gameplay is superb. Controls are easy to use, but provide enough challenge for a long-time gamer.

Combat is so fluid and nice to look at that I sometimes found myself staring at the screen, wondering why no was moving, before realizing that I wasn't just watching, I was participating. Boss fights in particular, however, require a great deal of concentration and careful strategy, all of which pays off in the end.

The magic and skills and moves offer a seemingly never-ending level of possibilities, although the game seems to be long on points for your moves, short on points for your magic.

Items, both equipable and throwaway, are more varied than in the first game, and, for that matter, are more varied than in just about any other title. No matter what your character equips, they remain basically the same, though the weapons change a bit, if you look carefully, but this is a minor quibble.

The only major flaws with this game rests in the story. Now, I'm not complaining that they talk too much, they just talk too slowly and repeat themselves a lot. I love a good story as much as the next guy but, trust me, we get the idea the first time. Ryudo's cynical, Elena's a nice person and they're off to kill Valmar. Right, then, on to the next plot point. But, no, you have to watch the words dribble across the screen while the characters keep on talking.

The Grandia Legend

I've played all three Grandias to date and this one has the best story (which people say FFX ripped off its story from). The long, difficult journey of Ryudo, Elena, Millenia, Roan, Mareg and Tio is a memorable one packed with sweet cinematics and awesome battles. The battles are made even more fun thanks to the power up system. Using special and magic coins to improve special attacks, magic and skill books makes for an RPG that relies heavily on preparation to ease the extreme difficulty of the bosses. Basically the more you power up, the better off your group will be.

Speaking of which, the original Grandia 2 on Dreamcast didn't have the cinematics that this version does. They're great eye-pleasing masterpieces. Some of the spells and special moves are also cinematized and man, do they rule! Only a few of the moves and magic in Grandia Extreme look this good. The voice acting is nice too and each character has the best suited man or woman for the job.

However, the game has its faults. This mostly comes from the lagging that happens due to the PS2 having to process such massive amounts of data in towns and dungeons. The text speed isn't much better. Just be advised of these problems or you might quit the game too soon because of them. I really don't mind the way everyone looks in the game with their simple "eyes only" faces (I draw like that myself!). The leveling up is fun and makes this Grandia the most entertaining of the three. If you want EVERYTHING including all the equipment, magic, books and items as well as intense power training, you're looking at over 40 hours of gameplay.

You won't hate this Grandia. It's a treasure among RPGs!
