The game is so good (the rest of us already knew this), now Atari is distributing it...Game type: Inexpendive, resouce gathering, networkable, RTS in very well rendered 3-D person (not fixed isometric). Honestly this is really geared for pre-hormonal, but semi-violent teens. If your kids liked Pokemon, they will love this because after extracting the DNA from your travels you can not only combine the body parts of two animals, you can make an army of them and let them loose on your best friend. I think creatures like their pictures taken, as you can zoom in and around models in true 3-D space, and clicking on the camera makes them wiggle more. Combinations are not good/bad, but cost more/less which means the most powerfull player gets grumpy as they can't efford to build until much later in the game, making them vulnerable for attack by any five year old that just likes the way his creatures look. This makes game play more chaotic than any I've seen. Some may find you referring to your blackwidow-armadillo as cute before the day is over.
Cons:
- Proprietary on-line game network (on-line gaming not supported by GameSpy, EA Games, or even MicroSoft Game network).
- AI for the insect invasion mod was never finshed. You can't play against one person and two PC players.
- Not too much social redeming vaue, but if you were looking for that in a video game I would recommend you restart your search. Then again, there's no nudity or sex.
- Insect invasion over plays the value of chitin armor, making them way too strong.
- Limited access to the SDK (Software Development Kit) for developers and people with entirely too much time on their hands to make additional creatures from scratch. I'll bet like any maunufacturing company, they will kill the product line soon, and don't want you making new content w/out paying for it.
Pro:
- Free additional animal skins avaialble for download.
- Free insect skins available for download. (If you've ever wanted to let your son bring bugs in the house, this is the way to do it.)
- Creatures can be made to scale!! Most games/toys will only attempt to do this.
Hints:
1) Get a better video card.
2) Buy more memory or a better processor (Microsoft is even a memory hog with games production too).
3) Yes, if cost is a factor, you can always just turn off the anti-virus and use MS-CONFIG to end all extra tasks.
4) Not everything Relic touches turns to gold (who did they fire after Lords of the Realm III?)
5) Big kids should give a different rating to this than Warhammer 40,000.

Impossible Creatures is the funnest game ever. It takes forever to beat, even with cheats, and has many different modes. I have probably spent over 100 hours playing it, and I'm still not bored of it. I totally recomend it!

My 7 year old daughter saw this on a rack at a computer store (cheap software impulse purchase). I tried to sway her to get something quite different but she prevailed.
I am very glad I let her! I don't see this as violent (not by today's standards). There is no blood. There are battles but there is no emotional attachment to these creatures. Every game is different. I love the idea of developing strategies and helping our daughter develop alternatives. This game is not easy and I find that adults are intrigued as much as kids.
The 9 y/o boys across the street kept begging to come over to our house to play the game with our daughter (then their parents finally found a copy).
This was an unexpected surprise! It's cheap too!

I played this with my 7 year old daughter for a few times, and help her every now and then, but for the most part she plays the game by herself. I've turned a few other kids onto it as well, and they all love it. It is just a great idea for a game, how can it not be fun to mix a dragonfly with a gorilla to create a dragonilla? And the game modes really teaches the kids a bit about economics in the sense that there is a cost to everything, and resources should not be wasted etc. I've bought a lot of (mostly crappy) kids games in my time, this one rises way above the rest. The main negative on this one is that it does not support internet play against friends, and it also has some expansion packs that are tricky to install.

Impossible Creatures is a fun game that allows you to create your own animal/creature. I was compelled to buy the game after downloading the demo from Microsoft's website. The game is easy to learn and fun to play. The copy of I received wasn't in a jewel case, but rather a DVD type case. IMPOSSIBLE CREATURES

The free downloadable "Insect Invasion" expansion pack is a must. You haven't really experienced the full joy of playing Impossible Creatures until you add all of the new animals and abilities that come with Insect Invasion. There are also plenty of maps available from websites like that of "Impossible Creatures Planet", which is also a great place to go for online play.
I was into StarCraft and Command & Conquer before I found this game. I enjoyed the strategic element of real time strategy games, but battles were often far too long. Not so with IC, I can sit down and play a battle against 1 to 5 computer opponents and finish usually within half an hour.
My kids will watch me play games on the computer, so I prefer something like IC that really isn't any more violent than Pokemon. When animal units are killed, they just vanish from the screen.
This game has more of a creative element than probably any other RTS. You design the creatures for your army choosing from over 80 different species (with the expansion pack). It's really fun to mix and match coming up with such odd combinations as a hippopotamus plus a dragonfly, a moose-lobster, or a bombardier beetle with the body mass and face of a sperm whale. If you're like me, you will end up creating multiple armies--each one suited to a particular type of battlefield.
This game actually saves me a lot of money. I have been addicted to IC for six years now, and still never tire of it for any long length of time. I've pretty much lost interest in any other RTS games and have purchased far fewer video games of any sort since discovering Impossible Creatures.
The graphics are no longer top-of-the-line, but like any great game, it's not all about graphics. In my opinion, the graphics are very good and were they much better, chances are it would be hard for your computer to keep up with the action of dozens of units battling on the screen.
There is a great deal of strategy and creativity involved that give this game lasting appeal. The computer is hard enough to beat on expert mode, but you can catch on to computer patterns and learn to exploit them. Taking on human opponents is an altogether different challenge. So, if more than one family member is likely to enjoy this kind of game, and you have two computers in the house, I would recommend picking up two copies. I own several and have sold a few to friends.
The only other games I have ever enjoyed nearly as much or as long are the 2D turn-based Worms games like Worms World Party, and the multiplayer modes of various incarnations of Bomberman.
A truly fun RTS? Impossible! Yes, Impossible Creatures!

I've spent quite a bit of time with the demo and I'm adding this game to my Christmas Wish List. Over the years, I've tried a number of different RTS games and, frankly, the notion of "gathering resources & building structures" faster than the AI or your on-line opponent just never hooked me. In Impossible Creatures, Relic Entertainment has introduced the concept of player-designed units to the RTS genre, opening a whole new challenge for the player: Zebra+Ox or Zebra+Leopard? Not to mention an intruiging storyline involving our protagonist's long-lost father.
Mission objectives go well beyond the "Destroy Enemy Base" type of play, including collecting DNA from different animals to add to your unit creations, protecting innocent bystanders, discovering new technologies. And all within the first couple of missions.
Graphically speaking, this game is above par, providing a full 3D world for the player to interact with and manipulate. The camera can be positioned, rotated and zoomed to just about anywhere. Perfect for when you want to watch closely as your Coyopine makes mincemeat of the enemy. The animation is top-notch, as are the special effects and textures.
The sounds are also well done, though I do find some of the repeated alerts annoying: The creatures are under attack! Yes, I know that, I put them there to draw the enemy in! Oh well.
I've finally found an RTS I *want* to play! So come on, let's see what kind of creatures you can make!

I downloaded the demo of this RTS-Game and I must say, it's one of the most exciting and innovative games of the RTS-genre I've seen. The story about the lost father of the main character is not like the epic story Warcraft 3 is based on, but none the less it's very interesting.
But the really interesting aspect of "Impossible Creatures" is the possibility to create an army by mixing the DNA of 50 different creatures (Shobsters for example: a mix of sharks and lobsters). The possibilities of combinations are nearly endless. In Multiplayer you will never meet the same type of army in different games because every player has his own unique army of combined creatures.
Everybody, who's interested in RTS-Games and who wants to play something different than the typical standard-RTS, should order this game.
