Good, but not for me

I was excited about this game when I first realized it was very similar to Final Fantasy Tactics and Vandal Hearts. But after I had it for a short while, I discovered I wasn't really having much fun playing it. I think one of the contributing factors for this fact was the inclusion of a game mechanic called the Geo Panel system. It is very confusing. Of course, you can just ignore the Geo Panels and continue to play in the normal vein of turn-based RPG's. I do actually appreciate the game makers including something new to "shake things up" a bit. But the more I tried to learn this new game mechanic and incorporate using it into my campaign, the more I found myself becoming more and more disenchanted with the game.
Oh sure, if I had wanted to truly invest the time in learning how to play with the Geo Panels, I would have gotten it eventually. But every time I thought I had the Geo Panel system figured out, it invariably would not work the way I thought it would - and I got very frustrated. In a nutshell, while others love the Geo Panel system, I did not.

It is still a good, deep, and involved game. Just what you would expect from a quality Final Fantasy Tactics-like turn-based RPG.
As far as the story goes, I think I would have preferred a more epic "rescue the princess" or "save the world" thread, instead of the intentionally half-ridiculous story that it is. But I did thouroughly enjoy the hand-drawn artwork; very high quality anime there.
I returned my copy of Disgaea and bought a new American-made turn-based RPG called Gladius. I like it much better and am having a lot more fun playing it than I did with Disgaea.

Disgaea is indeed a decent game, but, I myself, just don't have the wherewithal anymore to drag myself over the very steep learning curve that is required to get the very most out of this game.

FFTactics vs. Disgaea

I personally prefer FFT over this game. Why? Well, a number of reasons.

The things that rock about this game are the depth of extras. The main story is alright, and to be honest, I enjoyed that it was different then usual. Those goody goody parents may be put off by the demons thingy, but the game isn't for kids anyways.(mainly because it is so complex)

Items are literally dungeon portals, which let you powerup other items, and gain levels. The Dark Assembly is alright, yet you don't need to know it to win the game. The Geosystem is what confuses me most. Sometimes I think I do something then bam something else happens. You don't even need it though.

FFTactics has a great story, which I loved mostly because of the characters. The characters in this game are annoying rather. Im fine with most of the characters, except the main one, laharal. His voice is annoying.

The battles in this game involve alot more special techniques, combos which are alright, and different weapon types. I enjoy seeing guns AND swords in a game, and that was a great addition. The battles themselves are pretty easy, I just build up laharal and have absolutely no problems. I enjoy it though. It is relaxing to play a game that doesn't require every minute clicking. You can sit back, set up your commands, and execute when your ready. Disgaea provides a relaxing game rather then a frustrating one.

FFT would sometimes leave you in tremendously hard battles. Those who have played it can agree probably that the battle in the castle, against that one special someone who turns into a demon is wayyyy too hard. You know, you have to be a knight or samurai with Ramza, you kill him off alone then he spawns into this demon minatour with 3 bodyguards and can kill everyone in one shot. I got over the battle after restarting from the beggining a few times. Disgaea gives a rather enjoyable setting, with good depth but not too hard.

The main problems I have with Disgaea are slight. The music is annoying now. I am so tired of that castle song. The comedy is dry, I have never laughed at anything in the game, and I have a great sense of humor. Even with a spoiled brat running around, you can't make someone laugh with pure stupidity every time. O look the girl is an idiot, LOL LOL LOL!!!!!!11. Just kidding, it isn't funny anymore. Demons sleep 2 years? thats funny, my characters seem to sleep about 2, no wait...3 hours. I'm not trying to go into huge detail, but I do like this game.

The one last thing I want to say is the biggest problem, complexity. The game can't avoid this. but there is alot to learn. and you probably will spend a good 15 minutes in the help menu, which is easily built in and can be accessed basically any time.

Is it worth the money? Yes it is. The game provides tons of battles, Huge levels(not like battle levels, im talking the levels your character can gain), 10000 I believe. On top of that, items are mini dungeons basically, characters have voice overs(japanese AND english), and there are plenty of special moves. You can learn moves off pupils. You can do combos. Shoot guns, bows, chop with axes, swords, staffs, and the occasional stabby ol' spear. I would reccomend this game to FFTactics lovers.

second to no RPG, strategy or not

after feeling somewhat indifferent to FFT's slow gameplay and overly serious (and frankly, uninteresting) politic-based storyline, not to mention its downright broken methods of leveling which meant hours throwing rocks at your allies to get experience points, it's a massive breath of fresh air to see a game with this much spirit and style come out with everything i actually liked about FFT and none of the things i didn't. it improves on virtually every single aspect of FFT. its battles are lightning-quick, managing characters is extremely easy, the "portal" which lets you re-visit maps (random battles in a strategy RPG weren't my idea of fun in FFT's case), the use of entirely new elements such as item levels which you can modify, specialists which you can find and assign in the game to your weapon to increase its stats (this is thankfully not a matter of looking on a FAQ to find out where they are, as they are randomly put on the map and you must capture them), an extremely engaging storyline, top-notch voice acting (in dual languages!), the always tantalizing concept of infinite power (read: start from level one, get to level five thousand), a massive list of secrets including entire worlds, items, character classes, and side stories, the "Dark Assembly" political aspect of the game which revolves around your parties' tie-in with the government to gain an advantage in battle (it is possible to bribe or persuade by force the senators who can help you), the ability to capture monsters on the field and have them work for you, the extremely well executed idea of tactical team combat, the use of "geo panels" which modify the field and can be manipulated to your advantage, "transmigrating" characters, i could go on and on about the depth of this game. it's also fantastic that although it may seem intimidating during the in-game tutorial, you do not have to master every concept to get by in the game and still have fun with it. its graphics are stylish, its soundtrack not without several stand-out gorgeous tracks, its second-to-none gameplay, and an extremely high fun factor make this game an absolute classic. highly, highly recommended.

Im not really a huge fan of strategy but this one...changed my mind. Its not really boring and doesn't take a lot thought. It also has a good story, some humor and, some crazy combos and moves. If i was you i would buy this game now.

Tactical Paradise

I've been hearing for a long time that this was a really great tactical RPG andhad tried to buy it off a friend years ago (he didn't sell, which further supports how good the game is).

Ordered it here on Amazon, which by the way extremely impressed me as to how quickly they got it to my house. Anyway, I'll skip the description of the game. Disgaea is the most fun I've ever had in a tactical RPG; the story is fun, there's plenty of stuff to do, and there's a good deal of classes and spiffy special attacks. I like all the characters so far. I've grown attached to them, especially the main character. The gameplay (battling) is the best part of the whole thing. There's several features that spice it up, like throwing and team attacks, and it's pretty fast-paced..and addictive! I find myself burning through several hours at a time playing this.

I do not regret for a second buying this. It really deserves a space on my shelf.

At last!! A Game for the Depraved Masses!!

Finally, a game that appeals to my twisted sense of humor! When I read about this game in EGM my first thought was, "exploding penguins? What in the world..." I had to get this game and I'm glad I did.

First of all, this isn't your normal strategy RPG. Once you finish the game you actually have a chance to start it all over again... with the same stats you ended it with. Do I have your attention yet?

Next there's literally hundreds of character classes and they all can make use of an array of weapons (although there are penalties for using a weapon character isn't familiar with) and there's a HUGE amount of growth potential and a ridiculously high character level cap of 9999.

Then there are the little extra features that really mess with your head: Geo Panels with different effects (teleportation, cloning, deffense and attack increases and decreases, etc.) when you character steps on them, the Dark Assembly where you can make proposals that change aspects of the game, and the Item World where you can level up items and obtain new ones.

But the thing I love the most about this game are the characters. I have never seen such a group of lunatics in my life. The dialogue is just too crazy. Examples:

Vyers - Are you blind to the horde of demons lining up to fight for the throne?
Laharl (smirk) - So? I'm the heir. That's all that matters.
Laharl - If they've forgotten, then I'll just have to make them remember.
Vyers (smirk) - I see. So you saw my potential and decided to strike first against moi...
Vyers (smirk) - Such wonderful intuition... Well played, son of Krichevskoy.
Laharl - I've never even heard of you. It's only a coincidence that we're here.
Laharl - You're just a tiny stepping stone on my path to the throne.
Vyers (anger) - *gasp* How dare you! I'm the Dark Adonis Vy...
Laharl - Who gives a d*** about you? Your new name is "Mid-Boss".
Mid-Boss (anger) - Mi, Mi, Mid-Boss!?

Etna - I don't know what kindness feels like, but he was a great man, and one
that I respected.
Etna - That's why I pledged to him my deepest loyalty.
Etna (pissed) - But, the Prince... He's still not fit to succeed King
Krichevskoy as the Overlord.
Flonne - So, that's why you want Laharl to become just like his father...?
Flonne (happy) - *giggle* I see. You worry about Laharl after all.
Flonne (happy) - That's love.
Etna (smug) - I doubt it. If he fails, I'll just kill him.
Flonne (anime-worry) - WHAT!?
Etna (smirk) - Ahaha... Just kidding.
-Exit Etna-
Flonne (anime-worry) - Etna... You're starting to scare me...

Robot - BEEP BEEP BLIP BEEP...
Gordon - Oh, sorry 'bout that. Of course I didn't forget you, Thursday.
Thursday - GORDON KEEPS STARING AT JENNIFER'S THIGHS. PERVERT PERVERT PERVERT...
Gordon (serious) - Hey! Why you!

Where do I start...

This game is a great game. I found through-out the entire game no flaws. It is perfection at perfect. The story is endless...the characters are endless...the levels are endless...even charcter building where you can get to level 999 and believe me there are enemies at 999. This has to be the most creative game I've laid eyes upon. This gama is FLAWLESS. If you don't buy this one it will be a regretful decision you'll have to live with for the rest of your life.

Disgaea isn't for the player's new to this genre. Though, some may be able to manage.

Disgaea is the story of the demon prince, Laharl. After sleeping for 2 years, he learns that his father, the demon overlord, has croaked. Throw in his wise cracking vassal and team of prinnies (Penguin doods) and you have the beginning of the game, which basically is loot castles for the time being and be a selfish little demon. Along the way an Angel Trainee, Flonne, is sent to assassinate the king, only to learn he's already dead. So after she evades the ragtag prince and his gang, she makes herself a new mission to learn if demon's can love. Hilarity ensues naturally.

Disgaea...buy it

I personally had Tactics Ogre as my Favorite game ever made(well, Chrono Trigger too). This game is like Tactics Ogre(the less known about Final Fantasy Tactics-kinda), and FFT of course, which are amazing games, that are really fun, and time consuming. A lot of people that are like me, who beat games easily and quickly will like this game because difficulty can be modified, and you can play this game until you get sick, because its so much to do. Graphics don't bother me, im retro like that, and the anime+voices is really cool too.

Disgaea - Buy it!

This game is great. I too am a FFT lover and all those other Strategy/RPG games. Disgaea just revolutionized all Strategy/RPG games. All these new things are really great. Item world, level up to 10000, the Dark Assembly, etc. It's system is so new and it would take a lot of time to find out everything about it. It's the best Strategy/RPG game I have ever played. I hope all who buy it enjoy it. :D
