DO NOT use the force......

Capcom had a good thing going with the BOF franchise. I never played the first 2, but III and IV were great games. This last installment all but killed it. First and foremost, the BEST thing about breath of fire {any of them} was the main characters ability to transform into a dragon. Its what set the BOF games apart from the rest. Is it present in Dragon Quarter ? Well, yes and no. Its there, but you definately won't be using it. Theres a gauge, everytime you use the form it drains the gauge. Theres one BIG problem. The gauge CANNOT be refilled. Nothing ..... and yes I do mean NOTHING will refill it. When it drains completely, you die. When you think about that, along with the fact that the last boss can only be defeated in dragon form .... Well, what we have here is a BOF game without dragon transformations. Theres a ton of other things I hated, such as the gameplay, game flow, story etc. But the dragon thing ticked me off the most.

BoF finally gets good

In the past, this particular series of role-playing games has been very well known for being a pedestrian and rote affair; not really straying from what is expected and popular at the time. But this time around, for some unbeknownst reason to this reviewer, Capcom has wisened up and released a game that is astonishing in sheer depth of gameplay that it makes up tenfold for any faults to be found in story or length.

In case you did not know, this is a very unique rpg for the times. The combat system invokes nostalgiac memories of the early computer D&D rpgs which allowed movement upon a grid and an attack at the end of movement, if the movement was not too far. But BoF: DQ spices things up with a very detailed combo system which allows moves to be stringed up and in the case with a certain character, stringing up different moves in the same combo can add status effects, such as bind which allows the enemy to still attack, but not move for 3 turns. So basically, your character receives an amount of AP each turn and these can be used to move and to attack, with attacks taking from 10 to 30 ap depending on strength.

This combat system is fine and all, elevating what would be an otherwise boring and redundant game into one of the most enticingly captivating rpg experiences that I have had, certainly the best for the PS2. Furthermore, this game excels in its supreme difficulty. Healing is limited to usage of items which is further limited by a somewhat lack of funds, limited storage space, and relatively weak healing items. For instance, the weakest item only heals 50 hp, and it costs 60 zenny, which is a small fortune for the starting player. I didn't have a surplus of zenny until a good 4 hours into the game, and I spent that pretty quickly on better equipment. Basically, what this entails is a game that is very unforgiving due to weak healing and a save system which can easily derail your entire save, forcing you to start the game over, albeit a bit more powerfully than at the start.

This game also rewards replays far more than almost any game of its type. With a game that can be completed in under 10 hours, this is a very good thing. Replays open new areas of the dungeons, new speech from npcs, and new cutscenes which flesh out the story, so it is within your best interests to replay the game.

Overall, you can expect 40 - 80 hours out of this game, depending on your tastes. So, if you think this is a bit too short, you should probably buy Morrowind instead, which will take you 300+ hours to complete. As for me, I don't have enough free time and 40 hours is plenty for a game that costs less than the price of two dinners at a steakhouse, especially one that is this fun.

Very good game, but you have to get used to it.

Bof Dragon Quarter is a very different game. It breaks away from the traditional form that all of the past games used, and its battle system is something you have to get used to. It can be frustrating, and the game is hard. For those of you who find this to be true, buying the strategy guide may help. It will get you in rythym with the game and there will be less frustration. You just have to play it for a while. My advice is, even when it's really frustrating, even when you want to toss it out the window, keep playing and it could turn out to be a really fun game.

I never thought a breath of fire game could be this horrible.... all breath of fire games have been good except for this piece of ... I mean seriously... this game does not carry on ANY traditional qualities besides you being able to play ryu and turning into a dragon... Why the hell are there guns in this game.... what the hell does this have to do with Breath Of Fire.... the best thing about this game is the box... go to the store take your game back (if you already bought it) and buy something like Dynasty Warriors 4.

Could have been fun, but...

I was excited for this game.
I love RPGs with the FF fighting style, but the lack of saving points in the beginning frustrated me to the point of taking it out of my PS2 and throwing it across the room after I had to start from scratch twice. Am I lame? Maybe. But it wasnt an exciting game to begin with. Dont waste your time with this one !

this game is VERY NOT GOOD

the bof series has always been good...UNTIL IT HIT THE PS2!

this game is flat out horrible. the battle system is not only difficult to get used to, but when you finally do get used to it, it's NOT FUN!!! the storyline is complex to the point where it's confusing and just too much work to try to keep up with. the dialog being boring doesn't help much.

so avoid this like the black death.

I am SO disappointed!

I bought this game thinking it would bear a slight resemblance to the other games in this series which I loved. However, I found this game to be frustrating to the extreme. I couldn't even get past the first mission due to the goofy save system which punished you every time you died. The only way to save is to use a save token, which apparently appear randomly after defeating enemies. My brother-in-law had also bought it and hated it for this reason, and also because of the dragon meter feature. Evidently, there is the ability for your main character to transform into a powerful dragon. The only problem is, every time you do so, it adds to the dragon meter, which, once full changes your character into a dragon permanently, and then GAME OVER! Why even put that stupid thing in there? Why do game designers have to make saving such a chore? I want to be able to save anywhere I please, at any time. We aren't popping quarters into a machine, so what's the point!?

I really wanted to like this game, and I believe it would have been really good if the save system were user friendly, and if they'd left out that ridiculous dragon meter. I have never in my years of gaming (about 20) been this frustrated with and RPG, and that's my favorite game genre.

So, in conclusion, unless you're a serious masochist, steer clear of this game! Consider yourselves warned.

Not So Good

I am a huge RPG fan and there aren't many games that I haven't played. I am also a quite a fan of BofF but I was very disappointed. I had to restart from the beginning of the game 3 times because I couldn't find any save token for the last 1/3 of the game. I had to let the PS2 run for 3 days because I couldn't find any save tokens. It Sucked!!!!! Especially when your girlfriend tripped over a power cord and had to restart again!!!!!!

Although Capcom had newer battle tactics and different try out for this game, you were limited with only 3 characters through out the game and you had to finish the game with a charcter who kept dying on every boss you face.

If you are a truly huge fan of BofF and have to play this game, it's an interesting game. However, if you just want to try this game, please don't buy it. Just rent it...

If you love the BOF games then stay far away from this one!

I am so dissillusioned about this game. It is the worst game I've ever played....ever! It's so frustrating, you can't save unless you have a save token well thats all good and well but they're so hard to find. Whenever you use the dragon meter you pretty much kill yourself and if you don't have enough dragon meter points at the end you can't kill the final boss so whats the point of playing it for 7 weeks and getting to the final boss only to find out you only have a few dragon points left and then you have to start from the very beginning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I played it for a few days and then couldn't even look at it anymore. ahhhhhhhh
The people who created this game need to be locked in a cave for the rest of their natural lives.
This is just a horrible game its nothing like its predecessors.
I would have given it 0 stars if I had the choice.
