It had the chance...

Birth of the Federation seemed like a reasonable purchase at the time -- but it's long since migrated off of my hard drive. Microprose has a solid history with Masters of Orion behind it, but they just didn't do justice to that game and Star Trek at the same time.

The game continues along a similar vein to MOO2 complete with a pretty reasonable combat environment. Like MOO2, though, it becomes a lot of micromanagement for not a whole lot of return and the computer just doesn't seem up to the task of truly defeating you.

If you're a Star Trek fanatic, you likely "have" to own this game and will enjoy it simply because of the universe (be warned though: it's all Next Generation due to licensing). If you're a turn-based strategy fanatic my suggestion is to stick with MOO2 or look elsewhere.

If you do purchase the game -- make sure to download the update from Microprose.

good, but slow, game

Being from the Master of Orion camp, and having not enjoyed MOOII very much, I was expecting great things from this game. It is a good game--better than MOOII.

However, the game has some faults. For the ST fan, there are some problems with the races (the Federation is fairly aggressive when playing as another race, for instance), the play is SLOOOOOW (on a 450 PII, 96MB RAM), and the micromanagement of systems takes a long time to get the hang of (but not nearly as bad as Star Wars: Rebellion).

All in all, a good addition to the strategy minded--campaigns can last for days. However, there's still no beating MOO as the best space stategy game.

A great game!

I think this is one of the best star trek games to ever come out on the market.

The graphics are really great except the combat scenes which are ok. The inability to turn of some of the voices and leave some on is also a little annoying. Other than that, i think it has a pretty good interface.

This is a game that does take a lot of micromanagement but thats what makes it fun. The only thing is that once I get beyond the simple level I have to use the cheat codes to win! It is a truly challenging game in that respect. It also takes a lot of patience. If you want a quick blow 'em up game, don't get this one. If you like intricate strategy in a difficult game that goes on and on (and on), this is your game.

Good game, slow play

Star Trek: Birth of the Federation is a good game but has a slow game play that can get boring. The good part about it is a pretty good game and it has some good combat in it. The bad parts are that the voice and music can get annoying and it takes forever to load. It will take a good 3 hours to learn to play and sometimes it gets frustrating. If I where you I would buy this product. Its worth every penney

This is a well thought out game that incorporates many different types of strategy, the multiplayer features are sluggish but are easily fixed with a patch. The many races gives the game unique perspectives.

So much fun here...

This game completely rocks. As you've read all the other reports, this game has a Master of Orion 2 feel. But I believe that Birth of the Federation provides a unique perspective on the Star Trek universe which makes this game so much fun. Truly, this game is a must for any strategy game player. I highly recommend it. Every single time you play a game you can rest assure that it will be different.

I LOVE this game! There are not enough hours in the day for me to play. My only wish is that the galaxy were bigger and there were more places to go and more races to deal with.If you like Star Trek so much the better but it is still a great game that I would recommend to anyone.

Ok, After reading the other customer reviews I tought i'd write a more 'Neutral' approach. This game really does bring turn based stratagy back to life. But yes the interface does get laggy. The Space Combat is Good except for the fact it is all over after 2 turns. If you get a ship editor up eah ships shields by 300 and you get a better result. O and the Borg, O YES THE BORG. Overall the Designers did the best they could, as with all space stratagys, there is one simple problem. It is not a stratagy. It is simply a case of who sends the most ships, This game almost solves the problem. I say well done.

really cool game but a bit confusing

this game was REALLY cool i first played it while spending the night at a friends house and i was okay at it. then i played it again and sort of got the hag of it but the bad things are that i sort of expected more fights and an easyier way to manage my 3000000000000000000000 solar systems. all of the changing systems started to make me sick, and the democracy of the game was not the best because every solar system had different things that they could build but others couldn't. it would have been much easyier if that when you captured/formed an alliance with another race that every thing would be updated to the highest level that you had discovered. the good things were that the whole (well not really..) (god)thing of moving all the ships around was cool, and the graphics in the battles were good to.

Robbert

P.S. WATCH OUT FOR THE BORG THEY'LL KICK YOUR BUT FROM ONE SIDE OF THE UNIVERESE TO THE OTHER 20 BILLION, TRILLION, ZILLION, KA-GILLION TIMES. it is worth every penny.

Great game for all Turn based lovers

This game was introduced to me by my boss who loves everything Trek. I thought it would be a cheap copy of another combat turn based game but it was not. This game is great way to pass time of you love to plot a war of ships, spys, and diplomats. The computer AI is great and flexable and adapts to both yours and the other computer controled players. Have yet to try a human vs human game but i think it will be fun.

Overall a must buy
