Cool Retro scifi game

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 10 / 13
Date: January 27, 2002
Author: Amazon User

I really enjoyed this game. I love all those old 50s scifi movies and this game has many references and homages to them.

It's not one of the current brand of complex, story-driven first-person games you see so much now, and that was very refreshing to me. I like those games too, but it's nice to have a change. There are no cinematic cut scenes, no in-depth character development, just good, straightforward fun like the old video games of the 80s. In that respect it's nostalgic on 2 fronts: 1, 50s scifi; 2, classic arcade games. However, the graphics are top-notch by today's standards, with great character design and effects.

The gameplay is very simple but diverse, just explore, jump, shoot. But don't let the demo of the first level fool you, there are many changes in gameplay with each level providing a new challenge. One level is a freaky circus cloud city level that reminded me of the Twilight Zone. Each area is separated from the next and you have to use different methods to get between them like getting shot out of a human cannonball canon, or riding a rocket sled. The only negative is that it's not a long game, only 10 levels, but there is a lot of fun, varied gameplay packed into those levels so it's still worth it.

Anyway, if you're looking for a different, fun, colorful game for your mac that is not violent, I definitely recommend Otto Matic.

This is far from the first great game from Pangea Software, developers of cro-mag rally, bugdom, nanasour and if your a long time user like me power pete (recently remaned Mighty Mike). In this game your an 'otto matic' (hints the name) from the inter-galatic police sent to many planets, the first being Earth, to rescue the inhabitants. I think it's a great game, especially if you're a fan of any of the previously mentioned titles. My advice. Buy it, if you're still unsure go to apple's website and download the demo, it only inculdes the first level and you can't save games, but it will give you a feel for the program. Just don't go in the water and watch out for those killer tomatoes...

Love this game!!!

I love this game! My grandpa got it for me and I love it! It's a little hard to play at first, but, after awhile with practice, you get the hang of it. This game is very imaginative and has some really funny spots, like when the evil tomatoes fall into slices when they are shot. Like I said, it takes practice to get good at this game, but it's worth it!! I really recommend this.

Otto-matic is a great game and once I started playing it was the only game I played for a long time. Otto-matic is tough at first but with practice it becomes easy but still challenging. Each level is completely different with different weapons, different monsters, and different objects. The levels provide an enourmous amount of variety. The only problem with it is the way the controls start out being set up but luckily this can be changed. This is a great game!

Once you beat the game see if you can beat my record. Go through the whole game without loading a save and have 8 lives at the end!

First off, I don't see why the previous reviewer thought that you could lose multiple lives at once (If that's not what you meant, sorry, I just understood it that way). Agreed, dying on level 3 by landing on the goo is pretty dumb, but other than that it's pretty much sane. For example, dying by landing in water is pretty realistic (you'r an electronic robot), along with dying by smashing into a giant crystal going four zillion MPH (exaggeration). Pangea software is a great company, and I have several of their games, Bugdom, Nanosaur 1 and 2, etc, but I think that Otto Matic is probably the best of the lot. It has a cool '50s B-movie feel complete with farmers and Beehive-'doed ladies. The weapon arsenal is pretty cool too. The 10 levels are sure to present a challenge without being repitetive, and they are just long enough to beat in 15 minutes. My only level complaint is that you can't save mid-level. There are checkpoints, but after you quit, it's back to the begining. Overall I think that this is a great game, and I highly reccomend it. I hope you found my review helpful.

This was a very good game. Graphics, concept, and gameplay were fantastic. It was kind of weird when there were evil giant cornstalk aliens were trying to kill me. Heh Heh!

frustrating game from a great company

My husband and I have been playing computer games for years. I'm stating this to establish that we have a lot of experience with many games and know what we're doing. Furthermore, we both love Pangea's Bugdom 2, so we thought Otto Matic would be a guaranteed winner. We were wrong.

After thoroughly enjoying Level 1, which takes place in the rural countryside of Earth, we have been nothing but frustrated by subsequent levels. Level 2 is very long and pretty difficult -- that seems like a rotten thing to do to a player! You can lose multiple lives in silly ways, some tasks are tedious and seemingly interminable, and the over-your-shoulder camera often freaks and deserts you, obstructed by tall objects, when you need it most.

That said, the game is absolutely gorgeous. The 1950s B-movie ambience is flawless and hysterical, the graphics are dazzling, the music is great and the villains are exceptionally creative, visually and conceptually. Powerups are attractive and sounds are delightful. It's too bad the overall design results in such a frustrating experience.

This is really a great game that works on a simple basis. Run, fly, shoot, jump. That's it. Each level has a different environment with some great graphics. I saved each level and then went back to see if I could improve my score. The only catch is that you carry over your "lives" from one level to the next. If you end up moving to the next level, but with no "lives" left, you may have to go back and redo the first level. Many hours of good computer fun.
