Intel NOT inside!

Let me start off by saying that I am a BIG fan of the Myst games and stories. I bought this game on sale for about $30 at Circuit City and was so psyched to get started playing.
The game installed fine, the graphics and scenery were absolutely breathtaking! The gameplay runs roughly like this:

You get to design and play as a modern character/avatar (think Sims2). You start off in a desert near the infamousfissure in the ground. Yes, this is the same hole in the ground that Atrus and Anna lived. The only difference with this game is now you can walk and run around, explore, and manipulate objects in a way that you never could in any of the other games. After leaving the desert, you get to visit many different beautiful and elaborate Ages... all with stunning effects and fun things to poke around with and explore. Sound effects are pretty much the same. Some of the background music (like in the Kadish gallery) is very beautiful.
"So," you say, "why the overall 2 stars?" Well watch out! For those people running newer PCs, particularly those that have the Intel Pentium(R) chip, there may be some MAJOR problems reading text in both journals and linking books. I think there is some sort of bug that interferes with the graphics display somehow. You can still click on the linking books and be taken to where you need to go, but it makes for a VERY difficult if IMPOSSIBLE time trying to figure things out. I was able to win the regular URU game itself, however, you need to be able to read some of these journals to win the expansion sets. So my suggestion is either not have that Intel chip or get used to looking up walkthroughs online. I did go to the UBI website and the only suggestion was to lower the game resolution and tinker with the settings. This may help with some machines, but it didn't help with mine at all.
Seeing as how this is a VERY important problem UBIsoft has failed to fix (or even mention on the packaging), I will only give the game 2 stars overall. I would give it one, but the overall gameplay is very fun and addictive.

Myst Uru: Complete Chronicles

Since I also have a Mac, I share in the disappointment of Uru not being Mac compatible.

The problem was that Ubisoft had chosen to build Uru around the Havok game engine, and "had been led to believe" there was a Mac version available. However, a quick peek at the Havok.com site shows no such Mac compatibility.

Apparently, Ubisoft has abandoned the Mac version of Uru.

Also, Uru Live - the online community you could supposedly connect through the game - has been shut down since February, 2004. However, there is a similar community called Until Uru available, although it only works with Uru and not the expansion sets. Even though the full Complete Chronicles will work with Intel graphics cards, UU doesn't, and will require getting either a Radeon or NVidia card.
Yes, I went out and bought a PC, so I could play this (and a few other PC-only games). Like all the previous Myst games, the graphics and the music are absolutely gorgeous. Just make sure your computer meets the minimum requirements.
You've been contacted by Atrus' daughter, Yeesha (now an adult) to travel to New Mexico and explore a Cleft in the desert, which will ultimately lead you to an underground civilization that was abandoned something like 250 years ago. From the 1980s to the present, an organization calling itself the DRC had tried to rebuild the ruins, then gave up. Now, it's your turn to explore.
There are three games here: Uru: Ages Beyond Myst, To D'ni, and The Path of the Shell. Apparently, once you've found the Age of Relto, you can play these three games in any order - or all three (more or less) at the same time! The only drawback to this is (unless you're paying close attention to what Yeesha tells you), it's hard to tell when you've finished one.
This is the first time I ever had to use a walkthrough on a Myst title. Some of the clues (especially in Kadish Tolesa, or anything to do with Kadish, for that matter) make no sense whatsoever, at least to me. Since this game is in third person (although you can juggle between third and first) movement is completely different. The only way you can "die" in this game is if you walk (or run or jump) off a cliff, and even then you automatically "panic link" back to Relto.
As with all Myst titles, there are lots and lots and lots (and lots!) of books, journals and whatnot lying about, and you'll find almost all the clues in those books. If you're not a book person, you probably won't get far in this game. READ (DON'T SKIM) EVERYTHING! TAKE NOTES OF EVERYTHING YOU READ! I'M NOT KIDDING!!
The ending is a bit on the anti-climatic side. Let's just say it's pretty much an homage to the original Myst.
If you're a Myst-ophile, you'll defintely want this. If not, it's still worth looking into, although you'll probably tear your hair out trying to solve some of the puzzles.

Cyan Still the Masters

After playing at least 50 atmospheric games, URU is not only among the best, but IS the best, so far.

The dimensions and story line is multiple layers deep, being URU takes the experience to a level of total participation, as if so close and personal with the histoy of Dn'i that the player is truly involved in a significant virtual reality.

The wisdom & deeper meanings found in these Ages are almost metaphors for real life on a scale of civilizational proportions.

Not only are the visuals incredible, but the night/day transitions & living ages are as well. Personal touches like being able to create a tiny effigy closely resembling the player and being able to write your own journal entries take on much more meaning when the game has an almost spiritual feeling.

The creators of this game are in a class all their own due to the innovative concept of putting such a rich history behind the adventure, including the books of Atrus, Tiana & Dn'i.

Altho some of the puzzles can be found most perplexing, fortunatley there are walkthroughs & adventure guides easily found online for uninterrupted gaming pleasure.

In answer to pavlaki's review stating that the game cannot be run on anything but NVIDIA and ATI Radeon graphics cards--I did have a similar problem (coincidentally, also with a new Dell and assocaited with a CHristmas present). However, when I talked to technical support 2 years after the release, they said that although this is true for the original, unaltered, unpatched game, download of the To D'ni and PotS expansion packs also allows this game to be run on Intel Extreme graphics cards (common in Dell computers). If you really still aren't sure about this, go check out the system requirements for PotS and To D'ni--they were the things that first put the idea for the tech support question in my head!

Diehard Myst fans rejoice!

I'd read a lot of negative reviews for this game but bought it anyway because it was cheap and I'm stubborn. And listen to me... it was awesome!!! Plus it is certainly the longest Myst game and should last you a couple weeks or more. Though the gameplay is certainly very different from other Myst games, the beautiful graphics, fascinating and complex storyline, and outstanding soundtrack make Uru: Complete Chronicles the best of the Myst saga.

Though the gameplay takes some getting used to, it is not a problem at all. One new twist is the ability to jump, though it is quite awkward and makes for some very tedious moments. But don't worry; it is only necessary in a few puzzles, and I got good at it after a little practice. The third person perspective can be awkward in certain locations with regard to camera positioning, but you can switch to first person with the touch of one button.

Also, the ability to customize your avatar is a big plus. Being able to make an avatar that looks just like you and seeing yourself on the screen in the game's beautiful Ages enhances the experience dramatically.

The storyline of Uru becomes increasingly more complex and exciting as you advance from Uru to To D'ni to The Path of the Shell. I won't give away any of it, but I will recommend that you play Myst IV: Revelation before Uru and that you finish Uru: Complete Chronicles before you advance to Myst V: End of Ages.

The soundtrack is simply wonderful. Enough said.

Final laments include the lack of live action characters in the game, but it's worth it to be able to have a third person customized avatar. Also, the clothing choices are fairly limited for your avatar, though you may just find some interesting additions to your wardrobe on the way (wink).

So Uru: Complete Chronicles is simply the best of the Myst games, at least in my opinion. No doubt many will feel differently, but if you are a diehard Myst fan like me, you absolutely HAVE to play this game!

Love it!

I'm a girl. Not a young girl, but definitely female in form and content. So the Myst series of games have had great appeal to me. But. A fairly large figurative BUT. As a girl, I was stymied and put off when the games moved in to the realm of mechanics and mathematics. Not that I couldn't "do" them, it just was fun to do in an escapist game. I loved the gardens of Riven and would often just stay there, wishing some portal would open up and allow me to game in an environment such as that, where I could use other skills to find, discover keys or important game elements. I was enjoying Myst IV until it got into the "male" mechanical mode. I stopped and tried URU, the complete chronicles. Whoa! and WOW!
Finally a game for me! Thank you, Yeesha! I must admit the portions where I had to climb along narrow trails upon great heights scared the crap out of me as I do have a great fear of heights, and my heart would pound in my chest as I completed those tasks. But the rest of the game has been a joy! Puzzles I can complete without totally cheating! Oh, admit it! we all have to refer to some of those hint or cheat sites to get through the game. But with this installment of the series, even when told what I must do, I still had to do it! Jump from high heights upon a narrow ledge, or swim against a raging current! The game has not only been fun, but what a sense of accomplishment I have felt in being able to complete tasks I could NOT do in real life! Love it!
I am now in the third part of the package: To D'Ni. The scenery throughout has been gorgeous, though not as technically perfect as Riven; I think those graphic artists wore themselves out completely in that task! I love running around finding things, which I am very good at doing! And, for that small skill I am rewarded! I love the little "home" world we are given, Relto, and that our rewards go to fixing up the place. I still am unable to get one reward, which requires some jumping skills--jumping up a short distance--but do enjoy going back to try and try again. I'll get that goody. I'll get that goody! I do suggest, and not as an advertisement for them, but I do suggest going to Universal Hint System for your hints, as they do give hints to help, rather than just straight out answers, though with some really difficult puzzles they will at the very end, give the answer, either in word or picture. A very good resource!
The price these days is just perfect as is the game. Whether of the male or female persuasion, I heartily recommend this packaged set of Myst games!

I've followed the Myst series from the begining. Although my system barely made the System Reqs, I had a great time with this game! The customizable character, keyboard controlled character, 1st & 3rd Point Of Views made this game one the best in ones in the set yet! Stunning visual and audio effects made this game realistic I can't wait to get Myst IV in so I can try that out as well!

STOP---BEFORE YOU ORDER THIS GAME...BEWARE!

I just wasted 26 bucks on this game because unlike the other Myst games I've played, this one doesn't work with my Intel graphics driver OR my ATI graphics driver. There is a forum full of people who can't play the game. This isn't mentioned in the product info, so hopefully folks will read this review before they buy. Once you open it (which is the way you find out it won't play since it isn't listed in the product description) you'll only get 50% of the price. So, I paid 26 bucks for the product, shipping, and game and would only get less than 10 (50% of the game's price) back for a product that I couldn't use. So, like I said....think hard before you buy this game.

This is a game talking about the worlds beyond Myst, but connected with it. Those worlds are connected with the story of Atrus and his people. His family and his friends. It's a long game and with lots to do. You can build your own character, named and has freedom to walk around and be curious. Uru takes you to cyties that Atrus talked about in Myst saga. Uru, the deep city, D'ni and neighborhood. You see beautiful places and meet Yeesha, Atrus' daughter, who is a woman with a gift. You will start at New Mexico's desert and will go on from there, to find the door to those places. You will see what happened to all those empty cities and will find information about Myst, Atrus and family. Yes, there are linking books, but the fun about this game is learning about those great civilizations no longer there. And the efforts done to bring them back. It's beautiful, and like every Myst game, this is not an action game, it's an adventure, almost like being an archeologist. I loved it, although it wasn't Myst itself.

Warning - does not play with all video cards

I really wanted to play this game, being a fan of the previous three Myst puzzle games. I got it as a Christmas gift from my family and waited a little while before I loaded it. It never played. I got an opening sequence then crashed onto my desktop. The very, very hard to reach technical support (I never did get to ask my own question) had FAQ, two of which dealt with this type of crash. The answer was that you have to have NVIDIA GeForce 1,2,3,4 or FX; ATI Radeon 7000-9800 or better. I have neither, and even though my Dell is about a year old, I had no options. Too bad, the previews looked amazing.
