When I played the first one, the story was extremely exciting. Same with this one. Yeah sure, a four star rating for a review made in the year 2003, but that wont stop this game from getting a low rating because of bad graphics compared to games nowadays, I'm comparing it to when it came out. The default controls are hard to get use to, but luckly, theres a option to Customize your Controls. The Graphics are superb, and the fun factor will leave you playing hours on end.
Now, they have a patch (download sepereately) where you can play Co-op with three other friends! The co-op mode is smooth and it works out quite well. You will not be disappointed.
The best game I ever played

Where has this game been all my life! Just superb. Amazing that most people have never even heard of this gem. It saddens me that Looking Glass Studios have folded and God knows if we'll ever see it's like again. Shows what a cut-throat business the video game industry is - that a Studio capable of producing a game of this calibre should go down the pan. Please Lord, let the Dark Engine be in safe hands.
Finally a sequel for a great game

SS2 finally gives us what we wanted most: more of the great game that SS1 was. Unfortunately, from there on out we don't see much that is actually creative. Cyberspace (which added another dimension to the original) was sadly not to be found in the sequel. Neither was the cool hacker protagonist from the original. What we get in its place is a very out-of-place skill/upgrade system. My guess is the game developer wanted to make an RPG but somehow got saddled with a FPS instead. Another sad removal from the original were the repair puzzles. These were actually puzzles in that you had to use your brain a little to solve them. In SS2 we're left only with puzzles where your character's skill (and NOT the player's) really matters. On the plus side, the SS series have the best stories of any FPS-style games hands down. This is basically a mediocre shooter with a great storyline and well-done creepiness.
Magnificent Gameplay

If you want to become immersed in another reality, then buy and play this. It boasts a wealth of features seen in few other games, such as an on-screen map, audio playback of crew email messages that provide game clues, scientific and chemical research of mystery objects you encounter, selecting your character's basic talents, device hacking, a cloning booth where you may respawn if you are killed, and optional psycho-kinetic powers.
For me, the game's true appeal was the hypnotic power of Shodan herself. She is not your only enemy, and after you are repeatedly threatened by The Many you will find yourself attracted to her assistance, evil though it may be. And that voice ... the Voice Of Shodan ... you will long to hear it. It is commanding, disdainful, polyvocal, cybernetic, and hypnotic.
Best thing about the game: you can just lose yourself in the gameplay. I felt EMOTIONS, not just excitement. I've missed many meals, phone calls, and showers while playing into the deep of night.
Worst thing about the game: it's just *too* hard in spots! I simply had to cheat on several occasions.
Conclusion: go on, hit the "one-click" and buy it now!
Best. PC Game. Ever.

The title of this says it all. This game is as ground-breaking now as it was seven years ago. Imagine Half Life, Elder Scrolls, Deus-Ex, 2001, Event Horizon and William Gibson on a spaceship. Now play it in the dark. Alone. There has never been or will be another game like this until possibly the "Bioshock" game in 2007. Even that one has a completely different setting, but I have faith it will live up to its heritage.
Well worth the money, although it's getting harder to run on modern machines, so be aware that you may need to build a retro rig to run it. 1024 x 768 @ 16 bit is the highest res it will run at. Also make sure to obtain the "rebirth" files that drastically improve the look of most of the enemies, without hurting the gameplay.
Ambient, creepy, BIG... this game's up there with the best

I wasn't going to write a review for this game (considering my terrible writing skills) but when I browsed through the Amazon.com reviews and started seeing 1 out of 5 stars, I couldn't walk away without setting things straight...System Shock 2 is for people who like the beautiful ambience of Alien and the heart pounding intensity of Aliens. I have dubbed this game one of my VERY favorites not because of it's graphics or it's sound, but because of the feeling it gives me when I'm playing it and, sometimes even more importantly, after I'm through playing it. This game's atmosphere and sense-suckers stick with you for some time after it's completion.
In conclusion: If you take a moment to realise that the cut scene graphics aren't top notch maybe because the developers wished to put more towards this game's overall feeling, and have the patience to drink in all of the subtle wonders this game has to offer, System Shock will surely not disappoint.
Best Ever, but...

This is my favorite PC game of all time. I've been playing since it's release (yep, I've got the original packaging and all). My only negative comment is not on the game itself but that it is almost a crime that no further games in this series were ever produced. I also have SS1 but unfortunately still have not gotten it to run correctly on modern PC's (damn DOS crap!). I still have not taken the wrench challenge on the highest level, too much dancing around with robots I guess..
It's toooooooo hard....

I can't get through it. The bad guys constantly respawn. There is an extrememly meager supply of weapons. When you happen to luck upon a weapon laying around, count on it being shoddy. The medical supply is almost as bad. Going back and forth between your inventory is cumbersome.
I think the only way I could ever get through this game is to play it through by cheating in god mode several times and then trying to play it without cheats. The makers didn't allow for an effective god mode cheat though. It something to have to go into the game files and text edit, which didn't work for me at all.
This has all the makings of a great game, but it's way too frustrating for me.
Creepy !

I wrote a review of this game earlier and forgot to mention a first for me. I've played computer games since I got my Vic-20 in 1980. This is the first time a computer game left me highly emotional and sad. I don't want to give it away but anyone who has reached a certain point in this game will know what I'm talking about. It's easy to get lost in this game's atmosphere. Also, I agree that this game is one of the creepiest ever made. Just try playing it in the dark and you'll see...
