Stronghold came out a few years ago, do not let that put you off.
Set in medieval England, this is a simulation game that allows you to fight campaigns, enjoy peaceful campaigns, and even build your own campaigns.
There is enough to this game to keep you busy for years. It is suitable for kids around 10 years old through to adults. We own stronghold 2 as well, and also stronghold crusader. If you are looking for a fantastic game or a fantastic present for someone, I recommend Stronghold and Stronghold Crusader. Because these games are older you should be able to pick them up at a good price.
Basically it is a simulation game where you have to manage the economics of your kingdom. Factories need to be built, farms created and your kingdom has to be protected. It is a great game and after having the game for 5 years we still enjoy playing it.

This game though released in 2001, and a lot has changed in computer industry, still this game is definitely one of my most favorite, and I always come back to play it. You can build castles, command armies, fee as a Lord in the castle. There is enough humor in it which will greatly lift up your mood, besides AI is not stupid at all. Yes, the graphics are in 2D, but for me personally graphics is not the most important thing, the soul and the wholeness of the game is important. I greatly recommend it! Enjoy!

This game combines many elements that make a great strategy game all in one. It is one of the few interesting castle games out there and should be looked into by anyone, even if you are usually not into games. Build castles, defend your fortress, defeat an enemy lord and keep your people happy in this marvelous piece of work. This game truly does deserve attention and should be respected on the market as it is. If you havent looked into this series yourself, I would reccommend you start soon. Just remember - don't miss out on the fun!!!

Stronghold is complicated but you will figure it out. It's good if you can read well. The graphics are okay and they are similar to the Baulders Gate game if you have ever seen it. Stronghold is more of a strategy game. It's worth every penny because I find myself wanting to go back and play it for hours. This is a fun game!
I LOVE this game

First of all, I am not a gameplayer. I liked SimCity the original for a while way back in 1990, and since then I've played almost no games at all. I happened on this game because Stronghold (#1, original) and Tropico were bundled, and on clearance for $2 at target. From the very first little mission, where you have to build a settlement and manage to make a bunch of bread for the king, I was rapt. It far better than simcity because aside from the nice graphics, it's very educational and diverse. The series of missions act like a non-obtrusive tutorial, letting you learn how to do each thing, and challenging what you learned before.
Stronghold 2 is better and more expansive than the original in many ways, and but don't miss #1! And especially don't miss Stronghold Crusader (my #1 #1).
After being so blown away with Stronghold 1 and Stronghold 2 and Stronghold Crusader, I wondered if I've been missing out all these years. I ordered a bunch of games in similar genre, and none of them interested me. Settlers, Pharoah, Cleopatra, The Guild, and others... I think age of empires 3 is nice (3 1/2 stars), and I'm delaying judgment on rise & fall and rome total war.
But stronghold is far and away the best game I've ever played.
Very fun game, with some challenges to keep you busy!

This game I think is excellant if you enjoy a stratigy/command type of game. It's realistic (for example, you have to gather and prepare wood and "hire" a soldier to get a bowman, instead of just clicking on a button and suddenly the person pops out of no where), and very fun. Each soldier and "citizen" has a semiunique personality. I have seen better graphics, but for the price of the game, and the amount of depth that it goes into, its worth it. Finally, Stronghold is not only fun to play, its also challenging so you don't get boried within the first hour of playing it. The sceniros start out fairly "easy", and then get gradualy more and more challenging. Of the people I've talked to, most could beat the first 4 or 5 sceniros in the first day. Also, the game has a quite outstanding map builder, where you can basically do what the game programers did. You can design every aspect of the terrin, howbig the map is, how many resources there are, how big the castle is and how many people are in it, the attacking force, when things happen(theives, fire, etc.) and that sort of thing. You basically get to start from the ground up. Overall, this game is most definetly worth it:a lot of quality game, for a realativly low price.
Note:If you liked the Age of Empires series, and Age of Mythology, then you'll most likely enjoy this game very much!

If you are looking for a medieval strategy game like the older
"Lords Of The Realm", or something even remotely linked with
the five-star gameplay of the legendary "Defender of the Crown"
you will be most painfully disappointed.
To begin with, this game has no storyline, no logical sequence
connecting the campaign missions, and most importantly, IT IS
NOT HISTORY-BASED LIKE THE "LORDS OF THE REALM" or the "DEFENDER
OF THE CROWN" WAS.
There is no hint of where exactly in Europe does the player
finds oneself, and there are no glorious campaigns against
the European powers of the Middle Ages. One certainly feels
like one is in some kind of Medieval Limbo, where one is told
to accomplish certain things for no apparent cause.
All in all, the game plays and feels as if it were some sort
of a creation of a group of computer programmers-obviously
fascinated to the extreme with the Middle Ages- to pass their
leisure time by buiding castles and keeps, just for the sake
of building castles and keeps.
To sum it up, the lack of historical campaigns cripples a game
which certainly could have some prospects. Also, the game sound
is distorted and choppy with Yamaha soundcards of the YMF family,
and the developers have done nothing to correct that.
I have bought this game from a UK computer store paying only
one-third of its original value, and I still regret it. Do not
waste your money on this title, but buy instead Stronghold
Crusader, which is a lot better.

Greatest game except Stronghold: Crusador. I got Stronghold: Crusador first and at first it was confusing but then I played the tutorial and I play for about 2-3 hours on that or Sronghold. Then I got Stronghold . I played the siege mode and I thought it was so cool that you could start out with an already made castle, manned, and a flood of men filling in your moat. I was very happy about that mode because it doesn't take 1 hour to build a castle and wait 20 minutes for the enemy to come. Unlike Age Of Empires where you can't man the walls but in Stronghold you can. I enjoy the building mode where I recreated Helm's Deep in the siege mode.
Graphics 9\10 (bad face graphics)
Availability of troops 9\10
Buildings 10\10
AI 9\10 (sometimes the enemy acts stupid)
Gameplay 10\10
Overall 9\10 (more modes would make this a perfect 10)
