Better than X-Wing, Tie Fighter, and XW vs. TF combined!

This game is one of LucasArt's best. It is possibly the last in the X-Wing series, because of the new SW movies, but it is great. First off, there is a good plot. I was a little dissapointed with the other games in that you seemed so much like a mindless drone. In this game, you start off as the youngest in a family shipping company. You are "Ace" Azzameen. You start off with basic missions for your family's business, with a few feuds with your rival company, Imperial partnered Viraxo. A few of these might be a little dull, but there are only a few, and the last couple before you join the alliance are definantly the opposite of boring. Next in the plot, you end up joining the rebellion (explainied in game), and eventually get to participate in the destruction of the second Death Star. The game has alot better graphics than the other games, and the sound is superb. The only complaint I have is that they used different actor voices in the Battle of Endor to be those of characters like Lando and Ackbar. They should have just taken the voices from the movies. The music is also great. The music will change as different events take place. For instance, when a Star Destroyer hypers in, you will likely hear the Imperial March. Some of the missions are tough, but you have the option to skip up to 3 missions. Now, I actually got this game when it first released in 1999 for [price]. I thought it was definantly worth it. And now look at it here, for [price]! You have nothing to lose! Buy it!

Be prepared to become engrossed in the game

There are some games that you play that just are "games" and not experiences. Earlier titles such as the Rebel Assault games were as such. The gamer did not feel like they were actually "doing" what was happening in the game. Games such as Quake and Duke Nukem and Doom, while entertaining, are superficial and do not engross the gamer.

But X-Wing: Alliance is different. Where as Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six changed the way we play first person shooters (how many times did your palms sweat on missions that you could not be detected?), X-Wing Alliance changes the way we play flight sims. This isn't a superficial space shooter that leaves the gamer hungry for more. In fact, it is completely satisfying. The story is compelling, the graphics are sharp, the gameplay is never dull, and the music is, well, Star Wars.

The missions will leave you hooked for hours, constantly forcing you to put off that paper that must be written or that supply report that was due on your boss' desk three days ago. You are ultimately rewarded for your longevity and resourcefullness by hopping into the Millenium Falcon (assuming the role of Nien Nunb or Lando...I never figured that one out) and blasting tie fighters at the battle of Endor. And if you think that the Falcon didn't do much at that battle, just wait until you fly the 4 missions of that battle, and you'll have a new respect for what Lando did (especially the VERY HARD final mission of flying into the Death Star. Expect to spend a few days here)!

When you talk about Multi-player, this game excells in all areas. You can log on and play solo against others or join groups and coordinate battles. All ships in the game can be flown in multiplayer (I especially grew fond of the Toscan Fighter, though nothing beats the shear power of the X-wing).

Overall, an excellent game. Not only is it fun to play and enthralling, but you actually at most points feel as if you are in the game. When you fail a mission and decide that you need to make your multiple jumps back home instead of just quitting the mission right then, you'll know how engrossing this experience really is.

Older game, but still very fun!

The graphics were a pleasant surprise...they look very clean and detailed. The story is neat, and there are a ton of different ships to pilot in single and multiplayer modes.

If you enjoyed the other XW series games (except XW vs. TF, because that was just horrible), you should seriously consider picking this one up. It barely costs anything now, and it's an entertaining title.

Good Space Flight Sim

A space simulation game like 'Wing Commander', Alliance throws you into the Rebellion between 'The Empire Strikes Back' and 'Return of the Jedi' films. As with all such games a good flight controller is strongly recommended. The real innovation is there are two games in one. You play a a space merchant whose family business is attacked and almost destroyed by a rival merchant. After you join the rebellion mission are split between family and the rebellion with about one family mission for every three rebellion ones. While at the end you save the family business there a couple loose threads aren't wrapped up. The rebellion mission end with you destroying the Death Star's reactor in the Millennium Falcon.

I did have one issue: As a DirectX 6 game it would only use software rendering on my DirectX 7 box until I manually changed the game's ini file.

Great Flying Game for people who love Star Wars and games

If you liked X-wing or thought it was pretty good You will love this game because It has great graphics( Lucas Arts always does) good gamplay, the music is supberb and as is the sound. I had enough system requirements for complete installation but you can acculy install it on you computer with a 166 pentium for all the low computers like what i used to be. It is a great game and I recommand buying it. I can't think of one thing wrong with it. and if you had X-Wing vs Tie and you wanted to play multiplayer (I did to) Multiplayer on that was way confusing. But on this game, they link you to a site that I had to spend a year finding about (...) this is a great site to and so I am gald they linked it to us gamers. Well in conclusion, It is a great game.

Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance - One of the Finest in its Days!

I just got X Wing Alliance a few days ago, and it's pretty old now LOL - it was made in 1999. It's 2006 now, almost 7 years later! Guess what? It's still UNBELIEVABLY fun!!! I dare say that the experience itself surpasses even some of the modern flight sims we see today. The story is excellent - You are a member of the Azzameen family; trading company, slightly sympathetic to the Rebellion, but circumstances force you to join the Alliance and the game lasts 53 missions, the final of which is the Battle of Endor. Side stories are cool! They can help fill the gap in stories, and explore new plots. The gameplay is still mesmerizing, although the graphics seem old now - actually not too bad since I have an ATI mobility Radeon 9000 on my laptop. Functions like diverting shield power, laser fire mode and missle lock seriously enhance the experience; you actually feel like you're sitting in the cockpit of an X wing or whatever craft you are flying. The missions are varied too, with a gargantuan repertoire of objectives. Everyone loves hyperspace, and Rebel Alliance gives it to you: Ever imagine what it was like when Han Solo, Luke and good ol' Obi Wan narrowly escaped the star destroyers in the Tatooine system through hyperspace? Just play X Wing Alliance.

5 out of 5, and I'm still inclined to give more!

The learning curve of the game may be quite a bit longer for those who have not played the X Wing series before, but once you get used to the controls, you're in for the joyride of your life! Excellent stuff!

Thank you LUCAS ARTS & TOTALLY GAMES!!! Your OLD GAMES STILL ROCK!!!

GET THIS GAME! Great graphics, very realistic, great sound, challenging missions, and lots of missions and replay value make this game a true 5-star game! Multiplayer combat too! Spend hours of fun trying to get those extra bonus points, trying to destroy the Death Star, and much more. Plus many, many missions! WOW! (Joystick is required, but it's worth it!)

I love the X-wing series and this was an excellent finale to it. The single player game was fun and the multiplayer was fun too. It's become a bit dated now as the graphics are a little old but it's hard to find any other space sim that's better.

Some Great Space Action!

This is yet another excellent installment in the x-wing series, and is a great example of where action games in general are going. One of the aspects I found most interesting about this game is that there's an actually story with characters to follow, which makes missions a lot more fun since you know where, why, and how you are where you are.

When compared with the original x-wing, I'd have to say this one is better. Don't get me wrong; I think that x-wing is a classic, but its time is over. I can remember when I couldn't even BELIEVE that they could actually have a 3D model (even if it was just a few boxy squares) of an Imperial Star Destroyer! Now, in x-wing alliance, you get to go up against Darth Vader's (shudder!) super Star Destroyer the "Executor", the same shop which tailed Han Solo in "The Empire Strikes Back". Incredible detail!

The space chatter is also great, with some very witty lines throughout. When you accomplish your mission objectives, you almost feel like shouting a "yahoo! " yourself.

This is a another great Lucasarts game that no Star Wars fan came miss. Buy it now!
