A decent, if short, adventure side-scroller

I enjoyed this game. The interface is simple enough to figure out that I managed to teach my mother (non-gamer) to use it. I had no problems with visibility, but I should also mention that I played this on a DS Lite and so was able to tweak the backlight settings to something I could see given the room's lighting conditions. A friend I loaned it to who was playing it on her Game Boy Advance was having difficulty seeing it, though I should perhaps also state that she is in her 40s and needs reading glasses. She already has issues with seeing small text (and the text is quite small).
The puzzles were relatively straight-forward, though I did have to cheat and look at a walk-through on a couple of different occasions when I thought I had done everything and talked to everyone, but then realized that I missed something. The graphics are reasonably good and the sound was adequate. The music got a little repetative (I muted it) and there were only very intermittant sound effects such as opening drawers.
My only hint to those who are trying to play it is this: write down all of the clues you run across, even if you don't understand them or think they aren't important. They are and they will make sense when you need them. And look at everything *very* closely. There were some items that had more than 2 clues on them that were spaced close together. That would be when I had to resort to a walk-through.
My only criticism of the game (and it's not a huge one) is the absolute lack of ability to save and the relativley short length. There are a couple of "chapters" that function sort of like save points, but not as well. When you finish a chapter, it gives you a password that lets you start at the beginning of the next chapter if you turn it off. This means that if you do have to stop, you will lose any items that you have gained that are not supposed to exist at the beginning of that chapter. On the bright side, the game is structured so that you can't easily gain any items that aren't supposed to exist in that chapter, so you usually don't lose much ground.
This lack of save points didn't actually inconvenience me because the game only took me 6 hours to beat. Of course, that was with the help of a decent walk-through. It might have been more annoying if I'd had the self-control to struggle with a problem for more than 15 minutes or so.
Kind of Stupid, moderately interesting

This game is rather interesting. Some of the puzzles are REALLY hard and I can't even move the pieces around. Plus it's SUPER hard to handle/see because of the TINY Gameboy screen. You can't really figure out what you're doing.
I haven't even been able to figure this thing out and I've had it for, what, 3 years??? And I play Gameboy all the time and this is the one game I can't really get.
Anyway the 'password' thing isn't much of a password because you can figure out which buttons to push.
The conversations with the other characters aren't that good, because "Nancy" can only choose from 1-4 unsatisfactory responses to the other characters' annoying comments. ("Why don't you shut up!?!?!" is not among the selections.)
The character Abby is a total lunatic and I wonder why Rose is friends with her. She's a jerk and she thinks she can talk to spirits and stuff. At one point she almost had me believing her until I realized she was playing a tape cassette of voices and had a projector showing all these different shadows, ghosts, etc.
I bet (but I don't know for sure) that Louis did "it", whatever "it" was (I don't even remember what we're accusing him of). He'll cut you off in a conversation. You're talking to him and all the sudden he'll say, "I'm very sorry, I'm busy. Can't Abby or Rose help you?" No, they can't help me. You're the culprit, dude.
Rose is nice. She's okay, there's nothing wrong with her except that she actually bought this old "haunted" mansion that's falling to pieces.
Charlie's kind of cute and nice but also suspicious. Find out about him yourself. Also bring a lantern when you go into the saloon secret tunnel; otherwise you'll just fall into the dark. (Nancy: AAAAAAH! [splashing sound]).
ALSO: When you enter the Parlor in about the 2nd level don't freak out like I did when you see this black THING behind a couch. It's a fire, not a ghost; get the fire extinguisher.
The game offers NO instructions on how to deal with the many calamities Nancy faces.
Well, hope you can figure this thing out better than I did. I think it might be better as a computer game.
It wasn't as good as others

nancy drew... is genius! but having the computer games was good enough. now its for gameboy and it just wasn't as exciting as a lot of the computer nancy drew games. overall i'd say, from a 13 year old, this game, buy it for your computer.

My daughter who is 11yrs old never gets a chance to play on the Playstation, due to her older brother always hogging it up. So I looked into getting something for her and Nancy Drew has opened up a whole new world for her and me. It started out being her adventure and turned out to be mine as well. She loves the games and the challenges it gave her. We have done all of the Nancy Drew Series, including the new one Island of Deception. I can't wait for the next one. We highly recommend getting the whole series for any little girl looking for serious challenges. Be sure to have your pen & paper ready for clues!

My 11yr. old and I play for hours on these Nancy Drew mystery games. They can require you to put on your thinking cap but they have sites that give helpful hints if needed. My son enjoys these games and even gets his sister (7) involved. I highly encourage any child to play and master these games. You can save at any point in the game so you can leave and come back whenever you like. They also have a very historical educational quality to them.
it was good but not as good as the computer games

the games was good, but very hard to play. you had to finish a chapter before you could save and if you did anything in the chapter that was ahead of its time and quit, when you typed in the password it wouldn't be done, so you would have to do it all over again. overall it was a good game but i would reccomend playing it on the computer instead!!!!!!!!!!!!
extraordinary

I saw this game in a bargain bin at my local grocery store. I thought "woah! a nancy drew game? i l0ve nancy drew! she is teh roxx0r!".....Ya. This game proved to be teh SuXx0r!
The lack of a 'save' option was probably the biggest disappointment. When you complete a level nothing comes with you because of the password system. If you have an item when you finish a level it is magically back where you found it when you start the next level. (maybe this is because it is a scary scary haunted mansion and things like that tend to happen in scary scary haunted mansions? iono.)
Had they included a save option this game definitely would have received a higher score....unfortunately all the password system does is create a game that is frustrating and confusing....
Nancy Drew Inteactives just keep getting better and better
