This is a fun game and with the multi-player action, even the parents can join in or the siblings. My son spends hours playing this by himself and it really stimulates his imagination.

Why is every TMNT game getting progressively worse???

What a disappointment!! When I got word of this game, I heard that it would be like a TMNT version of Mario Party (It'd be a whole lot cooler if it were)....I also heard that the game had an epic amount of unlockables/bonus materials/easter eggs (which I absolutely LOVE!! It's half the fun of playing) ...the "unlockables" left alot to be desired....ALLLLLLLOT!! There was some nice artwork from the cartoon series of background scenery, but the bulk of the character artwork was the same as what you'd find in tmnt2 battle nexus...not only were many of the pictures the same, it looked as if someone took a snaphot of tmnt 2 while it was up on another screen!! Unacceptable!! Some were artwork of "some homeless guy in the background" and other random bit characters that no one cares about (that were most likely dug out of an animator's wastebasket). However, the sketches of the action figure designs were pretty SWEET!

There's also info about the original tmnt comic that started it all and it's there for you to "read"...but the text is so illegible that all you can do is look at the artwork (IF YOU SQUINT). The "outtakes" snapshots were horribly unfunny...as were most of the "outtake" movie clips (though there were 1 or 2 there that really WERE funny...like the one with splinter and mikey. That one had me LOL!!)

The "unlockable" characters were a letdown as well. You HEAR "20 DIFFERENT playable characters", but what you SEE are the same characters but in different outfits...big stinking WHOOOOOOP!

Yeah, it may be nice to finally see April O'Neil NOT being kidnapped and actually fighting amongst the guys....But my true favorite is Karai. What a letdown, I really wanted to see her....Imagine those two, boys (CATFIGHT!!!)! Eh, Karai would probably make sashimi out of April anyways...

The graphics look blocky and dumb. The poor turtles were made to look like CRASH TEST DUMMIES...the designers must have spent that time making the shredder character look cool...cause boy does he!

All of this MIGHT be forgivable if the gameplay was good, but even THAT's a problem. There have been numerous times my hits would go right through the enemy (literally as if he were a ghost) and not take any damage. And many times where you're supposed to pick up your enemy's body to throw around and it doesn't work...not to mention trying to "aim" projectile weapons (missile launcher, etc.)

It's not all suck, though. The "melee matches" ARE fun! But it's, for the most part, only fun when your friends are over to share.

All in all, it looks (and plays) like it was made in haste.

It's a sad truth that I (at my age) am just as big a fan of the Turtles as I ever was (minus the posters on the wall and the toys on my floor)...it's for this reason I rate this game a GENEROUS 3 stars.

TMNT: Mutant Melee

Box Warnings: Cartoon Violence
My Warnings: April's Extra Costume, Mindless "beating the crap" out of each other

----

Story: 5.7/10

Its not any good. Stories vary with each character, but you don't even pay any attention to them, because they play such a small role. No FMVs' or anything. Its text, but its to annoying and frantic to remember. Some of the story descriptions are just pointless, such as "Raphel got mad at Donatello. Go over and beat the snot out of em'!". Its pretty useless. Another reason I don't care for this game.

Graphics: 6.8/10

Its the regular old cel-shaded Ninja Turtles graphics. Like pretty much ever TMNT game. It looks a little worse this time around though. The character drawings are very decent, however. The game felt rushed (and it was rushed) by the look. I mean, look at the Unlockables section and buy the other media stuff. The graphics are VERY polygonal, making it look like little to no work went into them. Also in the unlockables, there are all types of sketches, and there is also, as an unlockable, the first TMNT Agima comic. All in all, it could be improved upon. Note that you can play as April O' Neil in a small bikini. Not to pleasant to see. Take warning of that.

Sound: 5.0/10

Nothin' really memorable here. It sounds like they got the same voice actors from the anime, so thats a nice touch. Music was nothin' to special. You never pay attention to it unless your trying too. Sound effects, again, are nothing to special.

Gameplay: 6.9/10

It needed some serious improvement. Its just another gaming slap-fest. You can pull off special combos and attacks, but you really only need to rely on the simple attack-attack-attack combo. You can pick up some items, such as swords, battle axes, machine guns, and the like. You can pick up most anything in the invironment, such as boxes full of smoke, oil cans, pillows, and (my favorite) TVs, as well as some others to chuck at enemies. You can unlock a slew of TMNT characters, such as Shredder with no suit, past Casey Jones, Elite Foot Soldiers and a bunch more (Beleive it or not, April and the regular Foot Ninja-in-training are the best characters). Your goal is to finish the story mode with all possible characters, and get Yin-Yang tokens to unlock random things. Gettin' those tokens is not a fun or easy task by any means. Some of those story mode missions are brutal.

Controls: 7.6

Simple enough, really. The game dosen't really explain how to do your special attack well, but, as I said, all you really need to do is rely on using attack-attack-attack combo over and over again.

Overall: 4.5/10

Terrible excuse for a fighting game. Is hardly worth the time. Good pick-up-and-play type controls aren't good enough to make it a decent game. Wheather or not your a Ninja Turtles fan, this should be avoided at all cost. Rent before buying ALL THE WAY.
