Gore, Action, a nice Single Player

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 4 / 5

This is a game like Quake, but with an awesome single player game, coupled with a fun multiplayer experience. SOF's GHOUL system which has 26 "gore" points makes for a game of blood, violence, and fun. Players' reactions differ, but can be quite repetitive after a while. Shoot them in the hand, their hands fall off, shoot them in the head, their heads blow off (you get the picture) The only gripe I can think of is the lack of multiplayer servers. Unlike Quake with my 35 ping, I'm stuck with pings in the range of 150 - 250. Let's hope more servers are put up in the future.

SoF is da bomb!

Soldier of Fortune combines top notch graphics and sound with great AI and the new RavenSoft GHOUL system. Locational damage and smoother movement animations are just 2 of new features added to the modified Quake II engine. With SEVERAL scaleable options from violence and gore to enemy re-spawning and number of saves, this game can be tweaked for your needs. More graphics scalibility options than you can shake a stick at! And the Multiplayer! Lets just say it rocks! More options in server setup then Half-life! This is the first must own title since Half-life.

Good for Gore

Good:

- More realistic damage model;
- Addtional player's actions (such as "look around the corner");
- GORE!
- Some interesting dymanic missions, untilizing the above elements.

Bad:

- Not that existing overall;
- Most soundtracks are annoying at best.
- Some missions (especially in the later half of the game) are not well-ballanced, relying on shear firepower and number of enemies.
- The "spawn" system is by far not the best way to achieve the goal of making player carefull it his destructive actions. It can be really frustrating when suddenly enemy appears in a place where you know no one could possible be.
Good:
- More realistic damage model;
- Addtional player's actions (such as "look around the corner");
- GORE!
- Some interesting dymanic missions, untilizing the above elements.

Still more good than bad. If you have not played any "new generation" shooters yet - do buy this one.

Shoot, Blood, Run, : formula to Win this Mediocre Game

This game by any standards is violent. But that's about all that I can say. Sure you can hit a guy in any of the 29 anatomical hit areas programmed into the game. Sure, it's fun to watch a guy holding a stub of his foot after you blew it away with a shotgun. But how many of these images would you really like to see for the next 4 hours until you finally realize this is just what this game was all about. Nothing else. Graphics: Nice OpenGL. Might cause some problems with GeForce 256 cards. Interface: in game save. easy to use multiplayer options. Gameplay: regular shoot-em up. very formulaic: shoot, blood, run. Do this for 4 hours and you'll finish the game. Weapons ballistics are not that real. Believe me... I know. AI: can be intimidating sometimes. Look before you walk into any area. Story: weak, bad guy wants to blow up world. Overall: You'll get tired of this game. If you want a good multiplayer experience though, get this game.

As good as I expected!

SOF was the latest game I'd become interested in after hearing about it and reading the gamer reviews. Having a decent system to play it with, I anticipated the arrival of the UPS truck.

I had a problem installing it. The tech support site was in my local area so I decided to call. Geeze! Problem solved in 5 minutes... even an old goat like me can learn something. UPS monitoring software was conflicting with the install only.

The game itself has graphics comparable or superior than Half Life. The advantage is the install will autodiscover and preset the defaults to the best display parameters. No more manual hardware config.

The gameplay will keep me up until the wee hours of the morning. Takes a great game to do that. Yes, as one reviewer pointed out earlier, the game is difficult. Its supposed to be. It is not impossible but will provoke dialog from your extended vocabulary! :)

There doesn't appear to be a lot of mental twist or puzzles as of yet, by the halfway point, but the game itself is a great classic shootemup! No crashes or irregularities to report. Their are some very funny death scenes (yours) where the bad guys act just like real life humans!

I'd personally rate it a 4.5 star

The best thing since Goldeneye

It is unfortunate that a lot of the hype surrounding this game is all about the level of violence. Behind that shock value is a solid and highly entertaining game. You are put into the shoes, or combat boots, of a mercenary and sent to various regions around the globe to track down 4 stolen nuclear warheads.

The game mechanics are, in the usual Raven style, very well thought out and implemented. Before each mission you are given a chance to load up on weapons and supplies. This isn't typical first-person shooter fare where you can haul around an entire arsenal, you must choose a few weapons and supplies based on a limited number of slots. In mission you are allowed to drop weapons to pick up different ones, a very nice touch indeed.

The graphics look exceptional for being built on an aging engine. The environments are very well done and are varied enough between mission to break any monotony. The levels are designed to keep you on track with the action. Probably the most impressive part is the character animation and hit detection. The models move extremely smoothly and react to location based damage. Shoot someone in the shoulder and they are thrown back in that direction. Shoot someone in the leg and they hop around, point blank in the face...well. Although it is very extreme, it adds a lot to the war is hell gritty feeling. Raven has even gone as far as to include various violence lockdowns with passwords; or you can just opt to not install any of the violent features.

Multiplayer includes the standard deathmatch in addition to a couple of excellent alternatives. There is a realistic deathmatch where one-shot kills are prolific and fatigue play a factor. There is also arsenal and assasin.

All in all, this is a great game. While it blends some realism in, it is still an action game in its heart. The story is interesting, design well thought out and the graphics are sweet. You won't regret picking this one up.

Great game, mostly.

This game has just about everything a first-person-shooter enthusiast would want. It has well designed levels, great graphics, good sound, and realistic weapons. The gore-zones add another cool element, albeit a grisly one. The only thing that Soldier of Fortune lacks is decent AI, which can be downright stupid at times. Also, to get the most out of the single player experience, you should use the custom difficulty setting and make it as hard as you dare. This is because on the medium difficulty setting, it is very, very easy, which might leave you feeling a little ripped-off. Other than these minor flaws, this game comes highly recommended, especially if you like your shooters gory.

Quake, Half Life all this [lacks] if you compare it to SoF

Soldiers of Fortune,,,,, uh where do i start this is a great game the graphics are so pure and clean the terrorists are well animated, the guns are cool and the sound is unbelivable, i liked the "low violence version" but the game it self is Incredibly realistic and Great if you liked Half Life or any of the Quakes your gonna love this one to the bottom of your hearts, you wont regret buying this one.

a decent FPS...

Now those that are attracted toward a straight-foward FPS will find this game satisfying. I probably don't have to go into details regarding the GHOUL system and what it entails given the amount of hype that has surrounded it. In short, SoF is not innovative but is fun...

To critique a traditional FPS is to look at the balance of weapons and level design. My opinion: the more realworld weapons are much better than the "futuristic" ones. Level design is a mixed bag. Every level is contained in a maze-like environment though some are decorated with outdoor-esque themes (snow, sand, etc.). all in all, get SoF for the gore! In a sick way, it is great.

so, it you find utterly destroying terrorists and the like (and have the maturity to realize that we aren't supposed to blow up the heads of our peers) check it out.

A combo of Gaming Goodness!
