really good concept...but weak gameplay

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 2 / 2

I guess the best way to describe the game is by listing it's strong points and weak points...I'll
start with the weak points so i can finish on a positive note :p...

WEAK points:
1) the ambulance missions can be rather buggy... hard to say much without spoiling a little
bit of the game... let's just say that since these missions in particular are randomly
generated...sometimes they are literally uncompletable (ie stuff behind walls or in tunnels
that are physically impossible to reach).

2) the combat system in the game is very flimsy... movement is too limited and choppy
control-wise (not graphics-wise)...

3) a lot of times missions feel more like obstacle courses than real gang movie type roleplay...this was one of my bigger disappointments... I thought it would be sort of an interactive gang movie type thing... but really it's just a "drive over checkpoints to win points" type thing that's been spiffed up a bit :/... which leads to point #4

4) not enough uses for all the weapons you can get... the selection is big, but there's not
really anything beneficial to use them for, which I found disappointing...

5) movement can be stiff and unforgiving, which can be very annoying at times. For
example, if you jump too close to an object, he just stands there looking at it for like 3
seconds =/ (no exaggeration! he just stands there waving his arms for about 3 seconds before
you can do anything again!)... That's just one of several things... it gets really annoying

6) there are quite a few bugs (like #1) that prevent you from fully completing some parts of the game... very frustrating indeed

7) There is a police dispatcher voice, which IMHO is the worst gameplay design blunder in the entire game... the monotone, robot-like dispatcher voice goes off with EVERY SINGLE little thing you do...and you can't turn it off, unless you turn off your computer's speakers *shrug*...but then you lose all the other sound effects too...

Anyway, as you can see, the gameplay design in this game is very amateur - almost feels like it was put together by a bunch of teenagers (no offense of course...not all teenagers would do such a poor job...some I'm sure would do a great job :)...
--------------------------
And now the STRONG points:

1) the world is insanely detailed...very fun to explore

2) the character is customizable with bitmap skins so if you are good at photo editing and
stuff you can use anyone's picture on the character ;)

3) If you can look past the obscenity of the game it really is more like watching the
Simpsons. Ie, a spoof of real life problems and stereotypes. I'm not judgemental of
violence/profanity/poor-taste in games, for various reasons, but even so I think they do get carried away a
few times, but still, there are certainly a lot of laughs in the game...

4) there are a lot of secrets that you can find... Unlike in many other games it's actually fun
looking for the secrets in this game. I did find a bug however that prevented me from getting all the secrets, because the game would freeze at that point even after reinstalling... this was...very frustrating...

so to conclude, GTA3 is very rich in detail, and has lots of laughs/humor (jokes, making fun
of stereotypes...that kind of stuff)... but there are a lot of little annoyances in the game that
get on your nerves, unless it's just me and my short temper :p ...

It is a port!

Not a bad port, but just a port. If you have it on PS2 don't buy PC version. As a port, it does not look or play like PC action games using the Quake 3 engine. The cars do not handle like Need For Speed or any EA racing game. You can not rate this over 80%, if you consider how much better this *could* be on a PC. That said, the game is great fun and provides more hours of enjoyment than any single player action game. It is a *buggy port* that really needs a patch. Without a patch expect hours of research and tweaking. Some PC game experts can't get it to run at all. Seems to have the least problems with Windows, Intel, and Nvidia combo. Hard to rate this game because fun factor so high, perhaps it should not be compared to good FPS and third person action games written for PC. If this game came out 2 or 3 years ago it would rate 95%, but not on the PC, today. What would bring it to 100% two years ago? Better story, multiplayer, or something to do with your money. This game is proof that PC gamers are king of the hill, and it is a long way down to the best of the PS2.

Ground breaking - Boooring!!!

GTA3 has changed the video/PC gaming industry. This is normally a sign that a game has broken new ground in it's genre. GTA3 has, it has even spawned a new genre. This game is not about aliens, hell or the military. It's about being a thug ass busta in a city teeming with life. The city resembles most east coast cities. Everything is here: cars, pedestrians, an L, a stadium, an airport, a subway, a rich side of town, a red light district, cops, criminals and prostitutes just to name a few. The cars act like real cars, trucks aren't as fast as sports cars and don't corner nearly as well, you can change radio stations in your car or even make your own channel in the PC version. There is a good amount of weaponry and a storyline that isn't half bad. That's why I'm giving it 3 stars. Unfortunately, the buildings are cardboard cutouts, you can't enter 90% of the buildings. All of the missions boil down to 3 basic game types: race across town, kill somebody for somebody else, bring object A to place B, and a various mixture of the above game types. By the time you finish Portland, you will have experienced all the game has to offer and realize, this game is really a thinly veiled arcade driving game. There is almost nothing to hold your interest in the game long enough to solve it; if you do hold out you will be rewarded with a ho-hum ending. Perhaps this is the best the PS2 has to offer. PC gamers will be falling asleep after the novelty of driving and changing car stations wears off.

if'n this is as good as it's PS2 counterpart....

...then any one who owns a good enough computer and doesn't have a ps2 should be obligated to buy it. anyone who has played the 1st and 2nd game should know how fun this game'll be. its different because its more realistic, i.e. you save it in the middle instead of having to complete a level in one go to continue. it works very well with the story like this. you can still go on a killing rapage and there is an easy to use lockon feature for the guns which helps in the fully 3d environment.

Please note that this is based on the ps2 version, because the gta games usually dont change that much from ps/ps2 to computer.

A life of crime

Caution! Game can cause sleep deprivation and called in sick days at work.

It is similar to "Max Payne" as far as story line and out of car action (when you decide to step out of your stolen vehicle to do your dirty work).
Interaction with your environment is excellent, other cars brake when you cut them off, pedestrians swear at you if you buzz them, people and cars might fight back depending who they are, you can also pick up prostitutes if you so desire (once I had a pimp pull her from my car).
The police element is also very intense and entertaining they can be a real problem when you go on a crime spree, the quasi world of GTA3 allows you to do quite a bit of damage before sending the police just don't kill anyone in front of them (as they patrol regularly).
The mission are great and very violent, as the game progresses you make more and different criminal contacts that you can visit at you leisure, they will give you marching orders to perform some heinous crime, which if you are successfully in completing you will be rewarded with cash and advancing to more difficult missions.
Obviously different cars handle differently, and a certain vehicle might be better suited to complete a mission (i.e.a sports car is needed when the is a countdown timer is running but a garbage truck is much more effective if you need to make a road block).
Not being able to save a game in a mission can be a pain (you have to return to your hideout to save and you cannot save once you stated a mission).
You also need a computer that is fairly new and/or a high end graphics card, ...
Roskstar Games internet site (at this time) is not geared towards PC users, don't expect much support from there...

There are more aspects of the game that I have not mentioned (I would be writing all day) most of them are good. Overall I am very happy with my purchase of this game and look forward to many more hours of game play.

Definately something different...

I've been reading these reviews of little kids complaining about the game, unfortunately they're not smart enough to realize that this game is nothing ordinary. Yeah you can steal cars, beat people up, interact with just about everything and everyone, and do anything you can think of in a simulated world... yeah that sounds like a junk game to me. HA! If you haven't at least tried this game, please do. It's great! Only something this entertaining would be outlawed in Australia, and the fun factor never ends. Enjoy!

PC Clone of PS2 Version + Better GFX

If you have already purchased GTA3 for the playstation 2 and are looking forward to seeing new things in the PC Version, you will be greatly dissapointed.

The big craze about the PC Version was seeing Multiplayer mode incorporated so you can play with your friends on LAN or Internet -- However this is not possible in the official release. It appears they scraped the multiplayer feature in order to make their deadline.

There's talk about a later "addon" or seperate release that will focus more on Multiplayer of GTA3, but I haven't personally seen anything on this yet.

This game is the best game i have ever played. If you want to be a gangster or a thug then this game is for you. You can do 72 missions when you want to buy going to certain areas like you will get a breifing certain places like a telephone booth ect. But when you don't feel like doing a mission just walk around with a gun and just take the life of someone i will not ruin it all for you but i must say this game is so real, i mean you get to steal all kinds a cars like the Cheetah which is a stand in for a Ferrari. and you can go buy guns at the stores, or you can buy like a M-16 or a rocket launcher from the black market. The fun part about it is that when you are driving you can listen to radio stations, my personal favorite is Chatterbox. it is a talk show based channel, people will call in and say some funny stuff. A note to parents: I'm 15 years old, and if you feel that your child is mature enough to play this game by all means let them play but reasons not for them to play it is : LANGUAGE they will shout out things when your driving like "You can't drive worth a s**t" This came also includes VIOLENCE people get killed every second. But over all this game is good, Another note the title means The best game in the world for you not for your children.

Grand Theft Auto 3... A MUSTown game!

After seeing this game on the PS2 and playing the series' first two games, I knew I had to buy this game! The scale of the city and the immersion level are so high that you are completely taken in by Liberty City while you run around town stealing cars and completing missions. This is a game that you will really appreciate, as long as you are not concerned about violence, language, or adult themed situations. Rockstar Games has put everything into this game and it really shines!
Also, I must note that if you don't have a decent video card and overall system, either upgrade or forget about it... GTA3 is a very demanding game! It's worth the upgrade though, believe me!

I don't have to tell you how good this game is. Everybody already knows that. It's _amazing_. But aside from that, a lot of people seem to be having trouble with running the game itself. I have an AMD Athlon XP 1700 (1.48 GHZ) w/ 256 RAM, and a GeForce2 MX, and the game runs rock solid smooth on 1024 x 768 at 32-bit textures. Basically turn off all the... background and have at least the recommended stuff on the box, and you'll be fine. The people with slowdown probably don't take the extra precautions to keep all the resources focused on the game. I had to download a small update file right away, but it's not that big. The tighter aim control and the addition of a custom radio station might just make this superior to the PS2 version. It all depends on your hardware and preferences.
