This game is awesome if you have a good gfx card

I am sorry but I have to laugh at all these negative reviews and just say that they all must have crappy gfx cards.

I have all settings maxed out and the game is very nice and smooth. I even have under the minimum requirement cpu but my gfx card is decent even though it is a few years old now. If you don't have a good gfx card this game is very slow/buggy like on my brother's computer. He has to have it set to the lowest gfx settings and it still crawls and is near unplayable. This however is not the case at all if you have a good gfx card.

My system is outdated but is still barely good enough to run this game at high settings. I have an AMD 64 3000 with 1 gig memory and a Nvidia 7800 gfx card but my card is an AGP card so it is way slower than a PCI Express 7800 card.

For all you negative posters, it is time to upgrade your card and I would have to say most of your view points are an issue of your gfx card not being fast enough and not with this awesome game. When I first bought Oblivion I could not play it at all, totally unplayable with my crappy gfx card so I upgraded my card and was able to play just fine. I suggest you do the same for this game if you are having problems.

This is by far the best game I have played and blows Oblivion out of the water in every catagory. My character is level 35 and I have explored about 60% of the game content at this point. I have never played a game that made me feel like I was in the world as much as this game does. I have never once got stuck in the world or on terrian or seen any of the bugs that others with crappy gfx cards have reported.

The only bugs I have ran into is a display bug on a potion that says it increases endurance when it really increases life force and I do sometimes have to save/quit the game and reboot my machine because the screen will bog down (probably a slow memory leak) but other than that minor problem which I am sure will be patched soon, this game is near perfect and the most fun I have ever had in RPG games. I have played near everyone since Ultima 3 on the Amiga computer as well.

Bottomline is that if you have a good gfx card this game is the best ever, if not it will be very hard to play it if at all.

Incredible story with incredible gameplay

I played Gothic 2 a couple of years ago the whole way through. The gameplay was great, and made me want more right away. When Gothic 3 came out, I was more than excited. The game is not only great to play and addicting in a sense, but also easy to pick up on. One of my friends was able to start his own new game without ever playing and pick up on the controls and feel for the game almost right away.

The game is easy to warm up to, and with great features like graphics, voice acting, and a classic storyline, Gothic 3 should definitely be an addition to your library if you're an RPG fan. I have played many games like World of Warcraft, Neverwinter Nights 1/2, Guild Wars, Oblivion, the Final Fantasies and such, and Gothic stills can hold its own in many areas. The fact that it is so free roaming and that the environment and outcome of the game responds to everything you do is incredible. Simply killing one wrong person in the game can alter the storyline. The ability to free roam and quest without being pulled along through very restricted areas, like in Guild Wars, is one of the number one drawing factors for myself.

Gothic 3 has many great features that I might not even have discovered yet. I am about 1/2 of the way or so into the game now, and I'm learning new things about it everytime I start it up. Gothic 3 is simply unique and I guess you're just going to have to try it for yourself. Good luck, and have fun!

Really great game!

I rarely write reviews, but I think the average reviews here on Gothic 3 are wrong. I've been playing computer games constantly for 25 years, and my favorite genre is RPG games.

I think Gothic 3 is the BEST game I've ever played! It has awesome graphics. I'm often asking my wife to come to see something in the game. I can't remember another game where I was doing that. The critter AI is very good. The quests are interesting. The sense of interacting with a complex world is better than any game I've ever played.

The complaints that animal monsters are too hard--that's not correct. I'm a middle aged guy with slow reflexes, and I'm not good at most real time or "twitchy" games, and I haven't had any problem with the combat. Now that I'm almost finished the game, and have become a powerful archmage, I never need to worry about melee combat.

The magic system in this game is interesting. Mages are much stronger than fighters and rangers, after they get the Mana Regeneration skill (that requires 250 Ancient Knowledge, which is easily available if you concentrate on it for awhile).

I haven't played Gothic 1 yet, and I didn't like Gothic 2 very much. I stopped about half the way through because I got frustrated over it being too hard. But Gothic 3 is wonderful!

Before Gothic 3, my favorite RPG was Morrowind (and my favorites before that were Wizardry 8, Might & Magic 6 and 7, and Ultima 3, 4, and 5).

I liked Morrowind so much (one of the few games I've played all the way through several times) that I was REALLY excited about the prospect of Oblivion. But I didn't like Oblivion very much. Somehow it seems bland and generic. I also thought it was too easy (this may be related to the fact that I figured out early that if you make a 100 percent Chameleon suit, you are invincible; I got to where I was slaughtering the worst monsters in the game with no armor and no weapon except fists, and after a point that was Too Boring For Words).

Gothic 3 is MUCH better!

You need a high-end machine to play Gothic 3. That's too bad. I think they weren't very accurate on the recommended specs. I have a fairly recent high-end rig with 2GB of RAM and an NVIDIA 7800. With the game's 1.09 patch installed, I find that it runs well most of the time. Saves and reloads are slow, but I can live with it because the game is so incredibly interesting. There are occasional hard crashes on load. The game is not as technically smooth as Oblivion. But it works well most of the time, and the gameplay is WELL worth the technical aggravations.

There are many negative comments written below regarding game performance. Many even claimed to have downloaded new drivers and still had poor game play (or they could not even get the game to function). Nobody mentioned that they downloaded the official patch which fixes many bugs.

I am running a very below-par system for this "resource hog": I have an AMD 3000+ 2.0GHz, 1.5gb ram, and a GeForce FX 5500 256mb graphics card. This graphics card is NOT known to be a good gaming card. When I first installed Gothic 3, I patched it immediately, yet my system would crash and go to a blue-screen immediately. So what did I do? Nope, didn't go and bash the game immediately. I updated my drivers, defraged my computer (for the hell of it, too much red), and searched the many posts online regarding my blue-screen error. They all pointed towards new drivers. With all that said and done, I tried to play the game again and what do you know, it plays... and plays... and plays... and I have never had a single crash or error in the game since. Although, at that point, it was horribly slow. I chose to overclock my graphics card (upped my memory clock by 25% and my 3D clock by an additional 45MHz).

I can only run the game on low settings (and it is still a little slow when new scenery is loading) but it has not impeded at all on the game play. I am over twenty hours into the game and loving it. Gothic 3 has really grown on me. In fact, it has occupied the majority of my past two days.

I highly recommend that anybody who owns or buys this game check for the most recent patch at [...] If I can run this game on my graphics card, after some mild tweaking and updating, then you most likely can as well. Just try. People all too quickly give in to the majority position (for example, bashing a game with the same comments). While I agree that the release of Gothic 3 should have been postponed, that is besides the matter when reviewing a game. To me, the content and gameplay is most important.

In comparison to Gothic 2, Gothic 3 has eliminated character classes and allows you to freely decide the future of your virtual world. In my experience thus far, I have posed as a mercenary for the Orcs and gained much respect for them, while actually being a member of the rebels. It's not like other games where when you "sign up" you are immediately chunked into that group, with all AI responding with regards to your label. Gothic 3 is much more dynamic and looks to be a fantistic playing experience.

Worthy addition to the Gothic series - great game!

Gothic 3 follows in the steps of its predecessors, providing an intricate and engaging plot in a huge game world, interesting quests, and distinctive NPCs and monsters. I haven't experienced the performance problems of other reviewers - the graphics are gorgeous and the game runs flawlessly on my system (Athlon FX-55, Radeon X800, 2 GB RAM). I don't particularly like the changes in the combat system for Gothic 3, but it's not so bad that it decreases from the game's enjoyment. I prefer playing as a mage anyway, and the magic system is improved over its predecessors. Overall, I'd say that Gothic 3 provides a more enjoyable role-playing experience than Oblivion. Don't listen to the negative reviewers; if you loved the first two Gothic games, and you've got a system decent enough to run it, you'll love Gothic 3 too.

Gothic 3

AWESOME!!!!! There are minimal bugs with the right system. Graphics are great and the music is symphony sweet. It would be hard to top Gothic 1 and 2 (+ Night of the Raven), but this edition at least equals them and the differences are refreshing and challenging. I will play this game for a long time, many times.

Massive Game, Massive Fun

This game is a lot better than most folks think. I would have rated this a 4 overall but too many folks didn't give the game a chance. The game does slow a bit when you have been on it for a couple of hours. Just turn it off and re-load your game. Other than that, I haven't seen all of the bugs people complain about and my system is old (1.9 gHz, Athlon 64, 1 meg RAM with a Radeon 800 GTO). You do have to be patient with the game. Gothic 3 is so immense, it takes a long time to develop your character, get the best weapons and armor, etc. But that is exactly what I want in a game! I have now played this game two solid months without getting bored. My character can still die around the next corner even at level 53! This game does take skill and you have to approach each situation different. I love it. Compared to Gothic 2 Gold, Morrowind, and Oblivion, it does lack a little but those are the best 3 role playing games ever developed. Give it a break folks. Have some fun with Gothic 3.

I've always loved the gothic series and now they've done a great job with the next one. It runs a little slow on my computer so I would recommened a really fast computer with a good graphics card. I haven't had any crash's in the game yet so that is even better. The huge world you have to roam around in will keep you busy for a long time, and there is always lots of fighting! Being able to chose from multiple paths to follow throughout the game is also another plus. Over all the game is great if you like games like Oblivion.

.ini modification essential

This is an incredible game that cannot be played without doing your due dilligence and finding out exactly how to modify the Gothic 3 .ini file to suit your particular system. I spent at least 3 hours searching various sites and putting together a document that identified instructions for modifying the values of various configuration elements found in my Gothic 3 .ini file. Once I got it right, the game ran without a hiccup, and I was even able to get rid of the flashing light problem that plagues many people. I have a very mediocre system (Athlon XP 2200, 1.5 GB SDRAM, X800 256MB ATI card, 7200 RPM 150 MB HD, etc.), and out of the box, the game wouldn't even run at 800x600 with all the settings on low. I now run it at 1024x768 with most settings on medium and even a few on high, but mainly the .ini variations are where it's at. It's really unfortunate that the developers didn't do their homework and configure the game properly for the average machine like mine out of the box, and then allow folks to increase settings upward from there. With the settings I have, the game looks great, actually coming close to rivaling Oblivion on my system (which by the way, suffers from a similar problem, i.e. needing configuration adjustments, just not quite to the same extent).

In closing, if you buy this game now for 20 bucks, and are intelligent/experienced enough to go through the various sites that will guide you to the proper .ini settings, you'll get one heck of a great game at an incredible price.

Good luck!

Well let me start by saying that yes this game has some bugs, i wont lie about that. But that doesnt make this game any less enjoyable. i have played all the way threw it over 5 times and have only had problems a few times. And i must say that some of these bugs actually helped me threw out the game. So dont go by other peoples review and thought about this game, buy it and then see what you think about it yourself.
