Rogue Spear: Black Thorn

I downloaded and played the demo and...

This game is and look's better than Rogue Spear's expansion pack (Urban Operations) even though you DON'T need Rogue Spear to play this game. There will be 9 new single player missions with a new story and with 6 new training/multiplayer maps. There's only two in Rogue Spear, City Street Large and Double Kill House. There's also 10 new guns added to single player and multiplayer, including a new M-16 rifle (M60 Machine Gun) etc.
And i'm also pretty sure, this game will include all the old guns from Rogue Spear. Some new equipment and gadgets include land mines, trip mines, and even mine detectors.... Looks like there's another "frag type" of weapon! But what's confusing, is on the box it's rated MATURE, but everything says RP (Rating Pending). In multiplayer, the "Lone Wolf" feature has been added, but i'm not sure how it works. If your a Rainbow Six and/or a Rogue Spear fan, you got to get this.. I know I will.

Newest Rogue Spear!

Woohoo! Finally - new maps, new weapons!

While Black Thorn is still the Rogue Spear enging (made in like 1999 or something) it's still the only game out there that's realistic. Now we've got new maps and new guns.

Also, now that my computer's caught up to modern technology, Black Thorn runs like a dream in high, high resolution on my PC. I can see a lots more stuff I didn't see before.

The new maps are pretty cool - they have a whole African village with buildings and alleys and streets, a cruise ship that's just huge, a hospital (that's really tough to beat in single player) and jungle map.

It has a couple of low points - the M60 is way too accurate for balance. It might be really accurate in real life, but it's like a laser beam of death in this game. Also, they added a pistol with 30 rounds of ammunition in a magazine - that's really tough in the lone wolf multiplayer mode.

But - it was only like ..., and if you don't have Rogue Spear, you can run Black Thorn al by itself, so if you've never played the Clacny games before, you can give this one a try.

Second Rate and Amateurish

Unlike Rogue Spear and Urban Operations, which were developed by the very talented people at Red Storm Entertainment, Black Thorn was developed by a team of UbiSoft employees in their Montreal office who were trained by people from RSE, but who obviously lack their talent. The level design, modelling, and particularly the texturing were second-rate and amateurish, and doesn't compare to the quality of RSE's work on the previous installments in the Rainbow Six/Rogue Spear series.

If you are a fan of Red Storm Entertainment's work then it might be worth buying for the bonus CD (American version only) that contains a feature on the making of Ghost Recon, but don't expect Black Thorn to be on par with Red Storm Entertainment's previous work in Rogue Spear or Urban Operations, or even Covert Operations for that matter. If it weren't for the bonus CD about Ghost Recon, I would have returned it and asked for my money back, it's that bad.

Contrary to the rave reviews that UbiSoft employees have been posting around the net posing as fans and customers, Black Thorn is by far the worst in the series - hardly "the best" as they have been claiming.

Excellent Gameplay

I just picked up a copy of "Black Thorn" and am already into the third mission of the Single Player Mode. I thought that the setup interfaces ran a bit smoother than the previous Rogue Spear games. The new weapons are cool. The new maps look and feel even cooler! As far as AI goes, I am playing in "Elite" mode and am a little disappointed with the AI's ability to come at me. Sometimes I will enter a room and the "Tango" will kinda stand there, allowing me to "pop" a cap in him before he reacts. Would be nice to have a fairly agressive opponent in the Single Player mode. But I bet the Multiple Player can remedy that fairly quickly for me. So buy and check it out!

PLEASE DO NOT BELIEVE THE JIBBERISH POSTED ABOVE

This game doesn't compare to another others in the series. I am not sure if amateurs are now boxing their products commercially but this game is second rate. The level are way too easy and there were a couple times.

Repeat after me: "I promise I will never ever waste my time on products that are poorly developed and passed off with regarding their customer's intelligence"

Not as good as I expected, but still satisfying.

When I first heard about "Black Thorn" I'll admit I was pretty excited, especially after hearing so many good predictions. Buying the game when it came out was on the top of my list, and sure enough that is what I did. Well now I'm sure you are just dying to know my opinion aren't you? :O) I'll begin with the negative points, first off the single player missions are not incredibly challenging despite a few brain teasing moments. It took me less than a week to knock off all of it's nine missions, if I had more time to myself it might of been a lot shorter. Also, it's thirty dollar price tag is a little steep, even if it is a stand alone mission pack. On the plus side of things, the nine missions this game provides are in some very impressive environments both size wise and graphical wise. Not only that, most of these missions prove themselves to have a high replayablity factor in both normal and special (terrorist hunt, lone wolf etc.) modes. Some new weapons have been introduced for all you single player lovers out there, including the impressive 7.62mm SSG3000 SR Sniper Rifle and the 5.7mm P90 SMG sub machine gun which is a personal favorite of mine. Multi-player fans will love some of the new weapons that have been added just for them such as the 5.56mm M82 AR assault rifle and the impressive 9mm SPP Pistol. The storyline is not so bad itself either and was pretty well thought out, but don't worry I won't give it away. So while this game is a little pricey, any Rainbow fan can't be without this overall impressive mission pack.

It's no Urban Ops...

After waiting an awfully long time for Black Thorn to come out, I have to say I'm pretty disappointed. It looks like this was slapped together over a long weekend. Many of the levels just combine textures from Rogue Spear and Urban Ops. Plus, the attention to detail that made UO and RS so cool is missing (for example, signs in Italy are written in English). Also, the game itself is pretty easy. On Vet level of difficulty, I finished all nine of the new missions in three hours, forty-five minutes. Finally, for those who know their weapons, see how many mistakes you can spot. I've lost count.

For Rogue Spear fans, it's worth buying; but honestly Ubi Soft, we deserve better.

More of the same, nuthin' new really. A few new weapons, no new unis, 9 new maps. Really, the Rogue Spear franchise has grown tired and this is a last gasp effort to pull in some green before Ghost Recon leaves Rogue Spear in the dust.

OK, and then what?

I am a seasoned RS (Rainbow Six/ Rogue Spear) player. I have bought every game in the series. Including this one. I didn't even download the Demo because I was expecting it to be brilliant. I must say, I Love ther RS series. (...) I could have made similar maps (the only real thing that changed) myself. Basically, if you know and love the RS series, wait until the price drops to get the maps. If this is your first introduction into the RS series. BUY IT NOW, then go buy the older ones if you liked it.

Boring...

This game continues with the great graphics that Red Storm has been consitant with, HOWEVER, I managed to finish this game in about 2 hours. The only challenge was the many "beat the clock" type scenarios.

BUT, if you never played any of the Rainbow Six collection, this is a must to get you started.

Get it and start wacking TANGO's left and right!
