I bought this game when searching for Baldur's Gate 2 to tide me over, but it turned out to be much more than that. This is by far the best game I have ever played or seen. The story is immersive and interesting and the landscaping is extraordinary! It literaly creates a world for you to explore and discover.
One cool feature is how you can actually tell exactly what weapon you're using when it is equiped. That made it really neat. The weapon designs are so awsome too!
This is the best game I have ever played and I highly recommend it!
Amazing Game!

I played the beginning of this game with no idea of the wonders hidden in it. I was amazed at the detail, the perfection, of the landscapes, for one. Also, this is one of the only games with such an extensive conversational and personality ability in all of the characters I have ever seen. I highly recommend it, because it stays refreshing and challenging all the way through, and never stops amazing me with the size and complexity of the world it takes place in. Although it's quite complicated to control your character, you get the hang of it after half an hour or so. Buy Gothic: you won't be disappointed.
I want to like this game, but the controls are killing me

Graphically this game is similar to "Morrowind" and in many respects, I would presume if you like "Morrowind" but want a story and purpose to your RPG this might work for you. It's certainly not a bad game, but it's trying.
The issue in "Gothic" is the incredibly bad impute control system. Although the Keyboard buttons are "editable" all controls on this game require two buttons simultaneously. Now, I ask, did the people that designed the game actually ever try to play it???
Here's the thing, do you want to pick something up, pres "f" hold then "w". Do you want to fight? Press "left" then either "q,w,e,a,s, or d" Yes, swinging your sword must be done by moving your character which will quite often result in you running headfirst into the enemy and dying.
I just died because I couldn't figure out which two buttons allowed me to climb "down" a ladder. Talk about frustrating!!! All I want is a simpler interface to make this a good, solid game.
As it is, "Gothic" is a nice-looking, good-sounding, expansive RPG in which your choices matter and you have lots of quest to complete, but there's no AutoSave and the controls are not customizable enough. That sucks, it had potential.
Excellent game - with some flaws

Gothic is an incredible game, hands down. It is an exceptional RPG with a good story line and mix between action and adventure. I only hesitate to give the game 5 stars for a few distinct reasons. First, the game claims 100+ hours of gameplay. It took me 25 the first time and I explored EVERYTHING. So, I figured out how the developers managed to come up with 100 hours: the loading times. This game takes FOREVER to load. I decided to time it eventually when I got so sick of waiting, it was over 5 minutes of loading time. The min system specs are way too low, I played with a system above recommended and had those problems. Another complaint people have had is the control scheme, but it really isn't that bad, I actually found it easy to use. Lastly, the game claims to be non-linear, but the only truly non-linear aspect is the first of 6 chapters in the game, which is choosing which camp to join. After that, the game is the same no matter how you approach it. The ending was too easy, but I think getting there was the exciting part.
Without mentioning these above items, Gothic is beyond entertaining. You truly can explore *anywhere* on the map, just be prepared to get killed from tougher monsters there. The quests are great, and there are a few side quests to try for the experienced player (i.e. chromanin). I enjoyed coming back to the old camp at the end of the game as a templar from the Brotherhood and slaughtering Gomez and all the guards, with fireballs and storm clouds flying everywhere. I recommend this game to anyone, it is a ton of fun.

I've owned the game for a little over a month and I dream about it! I can't believe how incredible this game is. It has amazing graphics and phenominal quests. It never lags, because it is so non-linear. You can do whatever you want, from going out and finishing quests to running around the forest killing innocent animals. This game ROCKS!
Should be in the bargain bin

The look and feel of Gothic give you the impression it is not a new release but 5 years old. The structures are blocky and the character movement is stiff. The game is controlled entirely through the keyboard. There's no graphical interface to click on with the mouse, the only thing the mouse is used for is for looking around. Playing a video game through the keyboard is as much fun as configuring your CMOS. The 18 page instruction booklet (weigh your Baldur's Gate 2 manual against that) gives one the impression there isn't much to the game. I only made it through 20 minutes of Gothic before uninstalling it. Save yourself 20 minutes and skip this game.

I was amazed by the graphics, game play, storyline and the AI of the characters in the game. I am steadfastly looking for a new game of this same caliber. I spent several nights up battling my way through the game unable to walk away from the computer.
One of the best games I've ever played

I think that this is one of the best games I've ever played, because the game has everything that a game needs.
The only thing you have to get used to is the controls but after you master them its just FUN FUN FUN!

I just bought this game and I am extremely disappointed. The box recommends a Pentium III with 600Mhz and I am running a Pentium III with 800 Mhz along with all the other requirements, so I was completely prepared to run this game. I have installed many games on my computer and have never had a problem. But I installed it 3 times and could not get it to run right once. I therefore am going to return this game tomorrow.

"I'm looking for some swampweed" Is the only grown up thing you can do here. The nakedness and sexual content is removed(for owr "Tender and "impressionable" american eyes). This has some violence but no blood.(a "child" needs to see the ugly side not to do it) Atari is stupid. However there are edits you can do to "remove" the "undergarments of women" or some such. "You didn't hear it here". That said. It is still fun. You CAN do drugs as in part II and you can peddle them(in fact you have to to get dough at first). You are a prisoner, so why in heck(other word) not! Thier is a serious bug when you near the magic dome(feild) you will not die, the game will crash and it will blotch it up permantly(as in re install). If you don't wish to waste time on this game(as in story continuety) don't. Part II has good ref to this and playing this is not nessasary to fully understand the II story line.
