Before you dismiss me as some pirate loving freak who has only played this game and therfore thinks its the best ever, hear me out.

I was givin this game as gift about 6 years ago and I play it to this day. Its quite simply the most fun I've ever had in an RPG, I've played all sorts of games and this is definitly the best overall.

There are several different factions you can join, English, French, Spanish, and Pirate. These mean different things obviously. You begin as English. English are at war with Spain so Spain is Hostile. French is neutral and Pirate is hostile to all. France is at war with spain though, but not allied with English. So turing to Spains Side would make you hostile to all.

Each faction has its own unique story as well. Four different games there, if thats what you want.

Sea Battles are amazing, want to slow the enemy down? Load your guns with Chain shot and aim for his sails, aim high thought, its range is less then solid shot or bombs. What to kill his crew? Load grapeshot and blast him! Now that he cant move and his crew is in ruin, board him! Attacked the ship and if you win, you gain control of his cargo and even his ship, only if you hired a first mate to captain it, of course.

Killing not for you? Start off buying coffee at highrock and sell it at dead island for twice the money. When the time is right, buy a tradeship and sail all over exploiting islands needs and whatnot.

The action, politics and quests availible on land I cant even begin to capture in words, so I wont try.

Want to stop Spainish harrasment of english ships? Attack a spanish fort and plunder their town, it will be weeks before its repaired.

Want to drive the cost of hard-wood down at Belfore? Raid a French Treasure fleet and make off with millions. Watch out though, they are guarded by 100 cannon floating monsters of ships called Man O' Wars.

Dont care about the story? Become and Pirate and do anything you want, I cant overstate how great this game is.

If you like RPGs and dont own this game, if you dont order it right now, you are either recovering from major trauma to the head or simply an idiot.

This game sounds very enjoyable. It would be nice if there were not so many system compatability issues. In fact, I never was able to get the game installed on my system, a system that does not contain any weird or off brand cards. My information technology team at work also attempted to help me load additional drivers, change system settings and basically reconfigure my machine, to no avail.

No matter how good the game could be, it is not worth the trouble to install and attempt to set up

Worst pirate game ever.

This game is the absolute worst Pirate game ever. It completely lacks the fun factor of Sid Meiers Pirates!, or the polish of any many of the top quality games. This is headed for the bargin bin soon.

It has typical Bethesda Softworks graphics bugs and other game crashing bugs. Ship control is horrid. Game play is non-existent. The interface is a cludge. The sound is good and the graphics are "ok". Brilliant in spots, and simply ugly in others. There are quite a few graphics bugs. Even with patch 1.06 (released 04/2001). No matter how well you pound an enemy ship, they will never strike. You must board (almost impossible). And then defeat the enemy captain in a duel. This duel is limited to a couple of crude keyboard strokes. And in the first 12+ I tried, I lost all 12+. Oh what fun. So I had the joy of reloading the start postion a dozen times and experimenting with several different There is absolutely no game balance. There is no way to scale down the difficulty level. In about 75% of the opening games, I was attacked by 3 spanish ships (you always start with the Spanish as your enemy). No matter how much of their sails you shoot out with chain shot, they remain always faster and more maneuverable then you. Your ship has 3 cannons facing rearward for when you flee. I used those liberally for hours (real time) and was in the end caught and killed. (repeatedly). This is a Simply STUPID way to begin the game. If you simply must own all sailing or pirate games get it. I tried to give it to a buddy I went to college with, and after trying it he gave back. Even free, it was over priced.

Fun but only when it actually works

I've been waiting for a Pirates game since the original Pirates from ten years ago. This one was fun and seemed to have some good potential. But that's only when you can get it to work. I have a machine that should run this game very smoothly and even with everything upgraded it freezes all the time and is more buggy than any other game I've played. And the patch 1.06 only caused more problems than it fixed. Also techincal support for it was basically non existant. I've also gone to the forums for the game and the general feeling is that they created the game and then went AWOL when the customers looked for help with the problems in it. I gave it two stars because it is pretty fun when you can get it to work.

Outstanding!

I got this game for Christmas 2001 and absolutely love it!

Back in the days of Sid Meier's Pirates!Gold I couldn't stop playing that game. Now this one has got me hooked. The best description for this game that I can think of is "Sid Meier's with better graphics". For example:

SAILING
The sailing is downright awesome. the programmers integrated wind and storms really well. There are times when the weather's clear and the wind is strong and other times when the fog is pea-soup thick and there's barely a wind at all (fustrating, but very realistic!) The game offers a first person perspective from the deck of the ship and a thrid-person perspective from and angle, including a zoom feature. when on deck you can travel to different points on the ship although I was disappointed that one couldn't go into the captains cabin nor climb into the crow's nest. But sailing was wonderful, crashing waves and all!

Navigation is by a seperate map screen, which means sailing from the first-person perspective from island to island is impossible. (Well, maybe... I haven't had the patience to try.)

COMBAT
Very nice! The ship's cannon are conenttrated on the sides but each ship has a handful of guns mounted on the stern to ward off chasers. A nice touch. There are four types of shot: ball, grape, keppels, and bombs. Ball shot are cheap and do some damage. Keppels tear apart sails and rigging, grape kill crew mmebers, and bombs are expensive but much more devastating than ball (a definite must for attacking forts!)

The swordfighting is similar to Sid Meier's Pirates! in that health is proportional to the number of crew on either side. Overall, the sword-fighing moel is very pretty and very nice.

IN TOWN
Walking from store to store can be frustrating, but interacting with the people definitely adds depth to the adventure. You'll walk the streets asking yourself "now where in blazes is that so-and-so?" The town's details are very well done and the quests will keep you glued to your screen.

Your nationality is readily apparent from the flag on your ship and the town's reactions to your approach. Feel free to change at will, provided you're willing to pay the price...

OVERALL
A very flexible, open-ended RPG. There are linear elements to the game, but there are several plotlines to explore should you exhaust the one you find yourself in. Your in-game choices are many and all are a lot of fun. If you liked Pirates!Gold, then this is the game for you. I highly recommend it.

This game is excellent!

The key to playing this game, and having alot of fun, is to increase your boarding skill, and hire a first mate as soon as possible. Sail from HighRock to the NE tip of Grand Avilia, board light merchants, defeat the captain, then assign your first mate to the conquered ship. Sail back to HighRock, with the additional ship; then, sell the goods on it, and the ship itself. Do this a few times, and you'll have plenty of money to hire a boatswain, carpenter, gunner, etc., (thereby increasing all your skills quickly) and you will have a really nice time playing the game.

One of the Best!

Don't be scared off by some of the bad reviews. Although I'm not
a pirate gamer, I certainly enjoyed this game. First the Cons,
It's true that tutorials are badly needed in this game and the fighting mode is easy to learn but you die easy too. The game is very difficult at first but you really get engrossed in the game and story lines after a while! Also before you do anything after installing, go to their website and download the patch or you'll go crazy! Pros, This game has one of the best music I've heard in long while! It really fits the mood of the game. Make sure that you have a very good graphics card, cause on a GeForce this game rocks!! Very good graphics during the sea battles make this game very addictive all around!Attacking a fort can be very challenging, so be prepared with a heavy warship or be blasted to Davy Jones Locker! Definately worth the money...P.S. For those of you interested in a corrected version, Sea DogsII is coming out this summer! They say it's got lots of extras!

Yarrr, these dogs know their sea adventures!

The graphics are great. The sound is pretty good (though I wish all the conversation were recorded instead of in text). The battles are complex and challenging without being stupid-hard. The storylines you can follow are meaningful and have a nice depth.

My only real beef with it is that I wish they'd used a real map of the Caribbean.

Beautiful Sailing

Very good grafics and playable interface make this a fun game. Based on a non-linear storyline, Sea Dogs offers the fun of exploring with enough action for the "Sid Meyer Pirates" fan.

The beauty of the sails and translucent water is best with an advanced grafics card. Without it you may not see any sails and the ladies in town are sans their lower half.

You may play as a pirate or merchant or both. Lots of fun without the cheats. Looking forward to Sea Dogs II.

I think this is one of the best rgp/pirates games i have ever played. The rich 3d graphics make you feel like you are a true sea dog. Plenty of action, and you can pick a country to fight for, french, english, or spainish. Or fight for yourself as a pirate.Take over ships you board,or storm into a port after you destroy it. I love to plunder and there is plenty of that in this game. Dont wait for Seadogs 2 buy this one. I have played Seadogs 2 and it wasnt as good as the first one.......
