I am a big fan of Rune, I was very disapointed to find it doesn't play on windows xp. I bought another version on amazon that advertised XP compatability, it wasn't.
Different is good

First off, you MUST get the update patch for this game (go to the companies website.) If you do not you may be unfortunate enough to experience a glitch that prevents a door from opening and thus keeps you from advancing in the game. This is why I did not give the game 5 stars.
The best thing about this game is that it is different. GOD did a very good job with using the power behind the Unreal: Tournament engine to create a game that encorporates massive, well planned levels with realistic gameplay, and an excellent storyline. The gameplay at first is odd for the simple fact that most of us are used to FPS style gameplay. But playing in third person quickly becomes intuitive (if you have played games such as Vampire: the Eternal Struggle, the camera and movement are fairly similar).
Even the easy setting on this game can be VERY difficult at times. You must develop your own strategy for each enemy type and incorporate you knowledge about how each weapon (there are FIFTEEN of them, five of each: swords, axes, and hammers/maces) behaves, and they do behave differently. Hacking and slashing with the absolutely massive Dwarven Battle Sword (odd name for a big sword huh?), or caving in the chest (not really) of a heavily armored opponent with the frighteningly heavy Dwarven Work Hammer (another odd name) requires much practice. As these are both two-handed weapons, you cannot carry a shield, putting you at a significant disadvantage. Strategy, quickness, and yes luck are essential.
To add a kind of quirky quirk to the game, the designers allow you to throw your weapon. Although I hardly ever used it for attacking enemies (they will pick up your weapon sometimes, and that is NOT good), this addition allowed them to create truly multi dimensional levels because you must sometime throw something at an object out of reach to smash it and create a passage to another section of the level (this may sound odd but you will see what I mean as you begin playing.)
The rune (not the game title) powers are all very useful, and each weapon has it's own power. Most of them involve impressive graphical displays, and usually result in the utter distruction of most enemies involved, note that there are defensive powers.
There a few other fun tid bits hidden in the game. You can make combination attacks, don't just press the mouse button as fast as possible, try different timings of pressing and also move while attacking, you may be surprised. Other additions include 'going berserk', plants moving when you hit them, being able to 'hide' in trees, a HIGHLY interactive environment, your character turning into a ..... I'll let you discover this one, and the gruesom ability to lob your opponents arms, legs, and even heads at people.
As far as system requirements go, I don't know how accurate the posted ones are for the simple fact that I played it on a PIII 700, with 128MB or RAM, and a fairly good video card. The game ran just fine on my system, so I don't know how well it runs on slower systmes, or faster systems for that matter.
Not a bad use of one's gaming time.

Rune has a lot of good points: The story, the visuals and the hacking and slashing. However, I must point out that the amount "switch-hunting" and "key searching" in this game is a bit too much.
Anyway, are'nt game developers getting tired of that old plot device? You spend a great deal of time in this game getting lost while hunting for a switch, which made me very sleepy. Why not move the story along using something else that is more fitting to the game?
For example, put the key to the locked door on a chain around a monster's neck. If a switch must be used to raise a gate, don't hide it so it takes all night to find it! Put the darned thing in plain sight surrounded by a bunch of Ogres or trolls or whatever monster is appropriate. See? Now the game is more fun already...

Rune is a lot of fun. It is different than many of the shooter games that are out there because of its style of combat. Also the view is in 3rd person perspective. Some gamers may not enjoy this viewpoint, but Human Head, the team that programmed this game, did a tremendous job with it.
The eye candy, or graphics, in Rune is stunning. Probably the best that I've ever seen. A word(s) of warning though: all of the action takes place in relatively tight quarters. Whether it be in the Viking version of Hell, or the Dwarf city, the environments are always really close. Fortunately the textures are really beautiful, and the level layouts are spectacular. Rune is different, fun, and fairly long. It is worth adding to your gaming collection in my opinion.

(...) I can tell you is that this game was completely addicting to me. The graphics were superb. The action/combat scenarios were thrilling. If you are the least bit into Nordic mythology and Viking lore, you won't go wrong with this game. Enjoy!

Rune is an great third person action adventure game. You play Ragnar a viking warrior bought back to life after he along with his father and many other warriors were killed by Conrack. The god Odin bought Ragner back to life to kill Conrack who worships the evil god Loki and stop his evil plans. I played Rune on the Direct3D video mode and it runs very smooth. It is a very beautifull game, the most beautifull single player adventure gameplay since unreal. The graphics are fantastic, The texures are very detailed and they look real, Real looking rock textures, Reflective ice surfaces, Waters that ripples, It is built on the Unreal Tournament engine. Rune's gameplay is very good, It remindes me of Heretic II. It is a very long game with more than 40 large levels. The levels are not very hard to get through but very fun. The third person camera for the game is a very good choice and the view is flawless. The weapons are also very good, all of them close combat weapons like swords, mace, axe ect, They can be made very powerfull when charged with rune power. You could also pick up a severed limb or head of the enemy you defeated and fight using that as a weapon, Really cool. And to restore health your charecter eats lizards (yuck!), leg of meat ect. The only flaw is that the game is quite linear, even the end boss is not hard. Besides that Rune is a very good action adventure game. If you like Rune get Heretic II even though it does not have great graphics compared to new games you will surely like it.

This is one of the worst games that I have played this year. I read all the previews, saw the pretty pictures, and got interested. Unfortunately, the final product is such a disappointment. I am so sick of switches or "puzzles" as you run around and jump around to look for the next exit point. I also don't want to spend my time leaping from one platform to another. Where's the fun? This is not the Olympics. In a word, lame. And the perspective makes it that more difficult. A 3D game should not have platform jumping as a major gameplay feature. In addition, the game AI is weak and unchallenging. There are instances wherein the enemy just "sits" there and you hack away, without any effort or fun. There's a online multiplayer portion to the game but I didn't purchase the game for that reason. Anyhow, as strictly a single-player experience, I'm giving the game a generous 2 out of 5.
Awesome!

Awesome single player experience and the multi-player is really cool. Nothing like going mano et mano in battle.

I had such hopes for this game. I enjoyed the demo very much, so I ran out and bought it. Bad idea. Next time, I'll learn to read some reviews from magazines first.
What sounds cooler than a viking warrior stomping around, eating live animals, and cutting the heads off his victims? Switch hunting, at least according to Gathering of Developers. I spent the vast majority of my time in Rune stumbling about a dark corridor searching for a switch or a wall to break, or just getting lost. I think it would have boosted the realism of this game if Ragnar randomly shouted out "Where the hell am I?" I was looking for joyful swordfighting fun, but spent most of my time hacking up spiders and those annoying undead ghouls who keep popping back to life. There were brief moments of mindless carnage, which I loved, but these were far outweighed by boredom.
Now I hate multiplayer in general, but I must admit that Rune's multiplayer is refreshing and entertaining for a while. Unfortunatly, there is absolutely no variety. Just strafe, rush in, swing weapon, hope you don't die.
In short, Rune could have been so much more than it was.
