What do you get when you combine flawless real-time strategy, gorgeous graphics, a wonderfully intuitive interface, perfect balances, and insanely addictive gameplay? Well, my friends- The answer is simple- Homeworld: Cataclysm. The strategical depth of this game is so intense, that the experience is far more than the sum of it's parts. 17 Single Player missions force you to use different tactics in every mission. You can't just waltz in and blow everything up. You MUST use the proper mix of ships to ensure victory. The Multiplayer is practically a game on it's own. I've spent many hours playing online day and night. I've even joined a clan to maximize my playing pleasure. :-)

Please, buy this game if your between the ages of -infinty to infinity. Trust me. You won't regret it.

Well, somehow they managed to make a follow-up that is not as good as the first.

Please note that the people who made this sequal are NOT the people who made the original, even though Sierra handles the production.

Pay attention to the negative reviews this game has received, many fans of the original feel a bit betrayed by this one.

Yes, there are some tweaks that are good: waypoints for movement, you can make vessels fly around in circles, some different ships.

However this game does NOT have the magnificent ambience of the original, the voice overs are sickeningly American-accented, it simply does not have anywhere near the class and atmosphere of the first.

Don't get me wrong, it is a good game and if you are starving for more Homeworld then go for it, but don't expect the beauty of the original.

If you do not have Homeworld, GET HOMEWORLD. It's better to enjoy the original first. You won't lose anything by playing that one first. Then play a demo of this one, and if you can stomach it, go for it.

Sierra, get your act together and make some cheap original Homeworld mission packs, thanks, that would be well appreciated.

I didn't think it was possible!

After playing (and aboslutely falling in love with!) Homeworld, I was as excited as a young child on Christmass day when I heard that Homeworld Cataclysm was comming out. When it came out I immediately picked up a copy. I must say that what I thought was impossible was done very well. The day before I started playing I would have sworn it would be impossible to top Homeworld. The game was just TOO MUCH FUN and was just written TOO WELL to be beatable! Oh baby was I wrong! This game is just so much fun! Not only is there more than 2 sides now, there's FOUR! Beast, Kushan, Taidain Rebels, and Taidain Imperials. Plus the Bentusi are back, and you learn more about them! This game is just TOO FUN TO LET PASS! If you have not played Homeworld yet, I seriously recomend that you get Homeworld AND Cataclysm, and beat Homeworld first. Then you have a better idea on how things work in Cataclysm. But either way, if you like RealTime Strategies, this game is an absolute MUST HAVE!

a great follow up

Homeworld Cataclysm is simply just a great game. This game will please both veterans of the original homeworld as well as the newbies. Barking Dog Studios added a lot of new features like being able to give orders from the sensor manager and added many new units, yet dispite some major changes to the game, the simple controls are all very familiar to the original. With all the new units and features, the game has a whole new feel to it. There is also is an extensive manual to help out some of the new players (and old). This game definitely deserves five stars. I'm not going to get much sleep for a while 'cause of this game.

I enjoyed this game but it is not homeworld. The story behind this game was terrific and would keep you playing for hours. As far as game play it was easy to gather hordes of resource and ships are cheap. Having a limit on my fleet through Source Units is a good idea but does take some getting used to, But I could not figure out why I never had to refuel any of my ships? Cataclysm is worth the money and I will keep playing it but I still have the first Homeworld within easy reach. By the way Cataclysm is XP compatible.

I played the first Homeworld. It was pretty good. The plot wasn't very creative but very well done. The interface was easy to use (once you got the hang of it). There was only one problem with it. The early mission were way too easy and the later missions were way too hard. Cataclysm, which picks up where homeworld left off, does much better. The plot concept is kind of lame (brave crew of the Kuun-Lan mining vessel vs. the ancient "Beast" which is bent on galactic domination), but it was done so well that It doesn't matter. The mothership can move, which is a nice improvement. The graphics are at least a bit better. The plot moves faster. I actually liked the Support unit system. In the original, they stopped your fleet from getting too big by limiting the resources you could get, the problem with that being that if they manage to take out your fleet, you lose, whereas now you can build more ships (resources are definatly not a problem!). I liked cataclysm more then homeworld, and anyone who says that it "lacks the charm of the original" can pout.

Great Strategy Game

Although Cataclysm seems to have flopped in comparison to the original 'Homerworld', I still had to go out and get it despite all the negative reviews I read about it. This is in truth partly because I found the first game so fasinating. However, I do not regret getting cataclysm at all. Infact I think that in many ways Cataclysm even manages to surpass its predecessor. For example, battle is now much more manageable due to the limited number of ships you can have at any one time (But you won't need that many if you play your cards right). Shortcut keys have been made to conveniently control features previously difficult to alter in the original homeworld. In addition features have been added to give greater detail to the whole game (eg- the ship overlay feature). The graphics are as good as ever they were. But what really caught my attention in this release was the storyline. Cataclysm is definitely a fitting title. The story is set 15 years after the arrival of the exiles to their homeworld. You start out as a lowly mining vessel somewhere on the outer fringe of the Higgara solar system. On one of your mining voyages you come accross the entity known as "The Beast". An entity that threatens to devour the known universe if left unchecked. From then on the story develops and your ship is slowly transformed from a mining vessel to the universe's super weapon and last hope for survival.
I usually rely heavily on reviews whenever purchasing games or books but in this case I feel that reviewers have done cataclysm a great disservice. It 'deserves' a five star review. I don't consider myself much of a gamer, I only go out and get a game if its (in my opinion) really really good. So if you loved playing games like starcraft, warcarft, the diablo series, shogun and mech commander then you should definitely give this game a chance.
For me this was 9 dollars well spent

This is perhaps the most incredible game I've ever played. Taking off of the original Homeworld, Homeworld: Cataclysm (or HW:C) improves on the original in many ways.

The best new feature is completely different sides -- unlike Homeworld, HW:C has two utterly different races, with different strategies, units, and more. Others include leeches (my favorite) -- small ships that "leech" the enemy ship's hull, infection beams, and more.

If you liked Homeworld, or any other strategy game, you'll LOVE HW:C. Look forwards to seeing you online!

Wow! Usaually sequels are not as good as the prequel, but Homeworld: Cataclysm is like nothing I've ever seen. New, better ships, awesome technologies, and a gripping storyline that equals if not surpasses Homeworld's. This product I highly recommend to fans of Homeworld, Command and Conquer, and and other RTS game, because you haven't played RTS until you've played it in 3D!! A must own.
