Once Again S.O.E. Drops the Ball

When you play a game do you like to explore the lands fight mobs and complete quest or do you like to stair at the screen and do nothing but wait?

DOF has many quest mobs with spawn times over 2 hours, a few take more then a day to spawn.

If you like to just camp Quest mobs for hours on end this is your game! If not you might want to pass on DOF.

Sony has done a complete about-face from the changes made this summer designed to win over more casual players - the game is now definitely geared to the hardcore, ie. players who sink large amounts of time in a virtual world. If you have any real life commitments - do yourself a favor and waste no money on this game-turned-job. If you're a parent paying for your child's subscription - seriously reconsider funding this habbit.

Beautiful Designed!!!! Memories of EQ 1!!!

DoF is definately a top notch expansion to EQ II. It's has good and bad parts too as stated previously though. It is a zone for 40th plus characters (but not just expansion for hard core gamers as previously stated) and I am not going to say that it is easy to get there but me and my wife took awhile to get our characters above that level...but I will say if you want faster xp to level grab a partner....most ppl who complain about slow xp are soloing ALL the time...why did you buy a MULTIPLAYER game then if you want to solo....lol...The elements of DoF are definately worth getting to 40th though....beautiful graphics and sounds....desert that has sand blowing....music is beautiful too..overall added up 60th level....more quests, and even more beautifully designed creatures.

Let's clear this up!

I agree with the others on this board, this is a game for hard core gamers and not a very friendly solo experience. I thought "multiplayer" meant there was a lot of players online playing, but I was not aware it dictated how you had to play the game. It would appear that it is okay for a solo'er to invest in, and play, a multiplayer game. How they choose to play is thier business. A true solo'er should not invest in this game, you'll just get frustrated. Grouping is the way to go, but good luck getting into a group. I like the idea of hired henchmen. This would make this game unbeatable. But until then, Guild Wars is the way to go for a solo'er.

Cut and Paste game development

It was a very big disappointment for 30$. For the cost of nearly a full game you'd expect a bit more in the ways of new content rather than stuff that obviously was just cut & pasted from old content.

"New" armor looks exactly the same as what you arleady had (except they changed the color tint...omg wow). Spell and combat animations are still the same. So you look exactly the same as you did before both in armor and when you fight...fantastic.

Oh yeah, and when you get level 60, do you get anything special as a reward? Nope, no new spells. Not even a "for fun" spell like at level 40 and 50. All you get is a trivial update to old spell(s). Also, DO NOT believe what you see in the trailer. I assure you 100% that you will be disappointed if you do, because none of that pizazz (ie the monk spin kicks or the assassin's flaming arrows) are in the actual game.

This is a very disappointing expansion. There's nothing really new for you to do whether you group or solo. You grind and gain levels, except in a different zone...wow. Tradeable loots are on the decline as well (a lot more stuff has a no-trade flag now), so it will be harder to find upgrades without raiding as time goes on; a disappointment for those that don't enjoy raids. Also sucks if you do raid occasionally but the stuff you need doesn't drop the one time you're present.

Spells are the same, armor looks the same...for 30$ you'd expect so much more than a "cut and paste" expansion.Save your 30 bucks. If you must spend it...spend it on a game made by developers who can actually turn out a product that at least shows that SOME effort was put into it.

To use the Auction system to sell goods to other players, you must leave your computer online running the game, while your character stands in one spot and does nothing. Sounds good? You can't leave you computer running 24/7 or you are on dial up and might need to get a call when you're not playing, that's just too bad. "If you don't like this system quit!" "We don't want to hear any more on this. This thread is closed! If you post another thread on this topic, you will be suspended from posting on the EQ2 forums!"

Here is a typical discussion that SOE will not allow, this thread was locked

After 6 months most players quit, they finally changed the auction system

If you are thinking of coming from "The World Of Warcraft"

If you are thinking of coming from "The World Of Warcraft" some things you should know

1 You can't solo your way to 60 you need a group or it will take you a year to get there

2 You can't have a lot of characters. You only get 4 unless you want to pay $7 more per/month then you get 6.

3 The high end content has a poor time to reward ratio. For many quests you will need to get a full raid to kill a mob that will only spawn once a week, this mob will not always drop the item, and only one person in the raid will get the quest item. FUN SOE style. Some mid level quests require you to get an item that has a drop rate of less than 00.1%

4 Update are not part of your monthly fee. When they unlock a zone or instant you need to pay another $10 access it. It would be like paying more to get access to Warsong or Zul'Gurub.

5 Zoning. To go from one zone to another you must wait for the next zone to load typically 1 to 2 minutes. If Iron Forge was Qeynos you would need to zone 4 time to run across the city.

6 The Great Gear looks the same as the Junk Gear

In short if you are sick of WOW and looking for something new you will probably not like EQ2. Guild Wars is a much better game to take a brake too. Also Guild Wars is between $15 and $25 a month cheaper to play then EQ2.

Countering Lies

I play EQ2 and want to counter some of the lies by previous reviewers.

You can sell while offline, you don't need to be logged into the game to sell. If you stay logged in then people can come to you and not pay the 20% broker fee, giving those merchants an advantage in big transactions. But the person stating that you MUST stay logged in is 100% wrong.

I pay the basic fee and get more than four characters. If you pay the extra fee you do get more characters but you also get many features like being able to talk with guildies while you're not logged in and free access to the mini-expansions. The statement that you only get 4 characters is 100% wrong.

At no time in this game has SOE charged $10 for content. The basic subscription covers a lot of updates, all received for free. As of this writing, Live Update 18 has been in place for a while. SOE occasionally introduces "mini-expansions" called Adventure Packs that they charge a few bucks for, or that you get for free if you subscribe to the bigger plan (see above). If I remember right, one Adv Pack was $5 and the other was $7. Whether they're worth the price is a matter of opinion. The statement that you must pay extra for updates is 100% wrong.

Zone times really depend on your PC. It's not a seemless process like it is in many games, by the same token you always have somewhere to run to for safety. Zoning for me generally takes 15 seconds for a smaller zone, 30 seconds for a larger one. Only someone with a very slow PC will see the 1-2 minutes the original poster stated and if you have that slow a PC, you really won't enjoy raid level content until you upgrade.

The game can be played solo but it will take you quite a while to reach the level cap if you do. The best way is a mix of solo and grouping. Some classes solo better than others (caster and hybrid fighter classes mostly) and some are more designed for grouping (pure fighter and healers mostly). There's a variety of styles supported but soloing to 60 will take longer than some other games do. A good group can really get you moving and I don't have much problem getting groups unless I'm in during a light population time.

I've been playing EQ2 since launch. I bought the expansion the day of release. I also pay the extra fees, so I get the extra character slots, for a total of 10. A regular subcription gives players 6 slots. Everything Smash said in his review, entitled Countering Lies, is 100% true. I'm not sure what information the other reviewers are basing their reviews on, but they're not only wrong, but lying. Anyone who did a little research on the SOE website, would see for themselves. Don't believe the lies.

EQ2 - the truth

EQ2 is one of the more difficult mmorpgs to master, but is also pretty easy to play. If you want to master advanced EQ2 tactics, you can, but you don't have to.

EQ2 has a great community. The people there are generally more friendly than in any other mmorpg I have played (I've played almost all of them). I think this is exactly because it is more challenging to master than other games.

The bottom two reviews in this thread are ridiculous, just plain wrong. For example, Guild Wars doesn't charge a monthly fee - I love some aspects of GW by the way but you do get what you pay for. You don't have to be online to sell in EQ2. Zones are not a big deal. Expansion packs are not like paying for the two zones listed - they are like paying for two new zones that didn't exist before, something WoW players have not had the chance to experience.. It's like buying a D&D module. Since WoW doesn't ever add much to the game, there really isn't anything to compare it to there.
