Much Better Than The Original...

I know, I know...how can I give a hunting game 5 stars? Usually I wouldn't...I've never liked hunting games. But if you have to choose only one, choose this one. Carnivores 2 is far superior to any other hunting game out there, and is much better than the original. Let's face it...no deer or duck is ever going to charge you and eat you for dinner like the raptor does. It's fun hunting and being the hunted...the AI is actually very repectable. So what's better about part 2? First of all, there is support for EAX and A3D,as well as Direct 3D and 3DFX Glide. It makes all the difference! Secondly, you have more choices in terms of weapons...now there is a handgun, double-barrel shotgun, and the others from the original. The new hunting environments are excellent, and are littered with random dinosaurs going about there business. I'm a fan of games like Half-Life, so a hunting sim would never appeal to me. But Carnivores 2 is worth the hard drive space...and let's face it...the price is right!
A real hunting challenge

I bought Carnivores and followed it up by buying Carnivores 2, and am waiting for Carnivores 3. What makes this hunting sim better than most is that unlike other hunting sims, in this one you're not gauranteed coming out alive. You have to be attentive. Play the wind the wrong way and your the hunted. Become careless on your approach, and the carnivore is on you before you can get of a shot. Walk in the woods without being alert, you're lunch. Challenge yourself in this game and you can feel the tension. It is easy to become bored if you're impatient. As a hunter I know full well that game just doesn't appear in front of you ready to be shot. You have to hunt. My average game can take fifteen minutes to one hour, depending on what I want to do. Play the game as it should be played by going for the biggest trophy herbivores or hunting the carnivores, and you'll enjoy the game alot more.

That's right pray if you will survive a hunt in this game. I have purchased several hunting games but i soon became board with stalking creatures that i knew i would eventually hunt down and kill. or throw the box across the room because i couldn't find it again. But this game has an edge. You never know if ur being stalked though the dense mist or if the creature your following dosent spring out from the next tree and end your days as a hunter. There is no hunting game in the world that could compare to the wonderfull environments, chilling sounds, and dino grahpics. Like I said before this game is scary. I have found myself many times stalking a stegasourus or something only to be jumped by a raptor. sometimes i get a shot of but its over. im dino lunch. But nothing to me is more scary then looking at a dino in my sights and then from behind be here slow but ever lounding thunps that shake the ground. You can guess what happens next. Also the game allows you some type of career where you earn points. In the first game u just unlocked weapons and maps. In this one they are all open but require to manage you points wisely for each hunt.NOTE POINTS DO NOT GET USED UP ONLY DISTRIBUTED IN EACH HUNT TO AREAS U WANT THEY COME BACK AT THE END. Again the environments are great! Look out for giant walls, radar stations, abondend villages, stonehenge, and o yeah the jaws of a T-Rex! Enjoy
Could have been better.

I would give Carnivores 2 a slightly lower quality rating than the original Carnivores. I can see now why original Carnivores is a better seller than Carnivores 2. The main problem with Carnivores 2 is that the dinosaurs are either too sensitive or too aggressive, more so than in Carnivores 1. The result of this is that either they can climb up steep cliffs giving the player hardly any protection places or else they run away too quickly at the slightest sight of the player. Luckily there's an edit file for modifying sensitivity in running away which helps improvement of play, but it doesn't do any good in lessening aggressiveness. Another fluke is the sun would glare in the eyes making it hard to see; Carnivores 1 didn't have this feature. The positive side of Carnivores 2 is that the 3D graphics are just as good as the original, and some cool new dinosaurs added. If you want to play this game successfully then just hunt the herbivores.
An overlooked gem...

Carnivores 2 requires a little patience and appreciation for suspense, but it repays those qualities with solid gameplay and substantial replay value. Even after you've bagged every dinosaur in the game, you'll want to find bigger and better examples for your trophy room. A variety of weapons and terrains helps keep things fresh, and a serviceable game engine makes tromping through the past a pleasant experience. The graphics are decent, and the sounds are even better. Overall, playing Carnivores 2 is akin to watching a really enjoyable "B" monster movie. A few lingering bugs detract slightly from the experience, but they're rather minor. Highly recommended to dinosaur fans that don't object to the hunting/shooting aspect of the game and to hunting fans that don't mind becoming the hunted!
Could be much better

I've played this game for hours on end, and it is always a mixed bag. What is REALLY, REALLY annoying is how, when you're in a safe position on a hill or something, and you sound the dinosaur call, the critters all run away, no matter how aggressive you have them set to be. The graphics are primitive in a lot of ways too, like when you can see a dinosaur right through a rock, or one is swimming and it looks like it's in the clouds. It's a decent game, but could have been much better with a little more effort.

Carnivores was great. The sense of adventure, tension and general fun made it possibly my favourite PC game. But Carnivores 2? I always hoped they'd make a sequel, but, even though looking back at it it is a very enjoyable experience, I can't help saying that it was missing something that the first game had.
Maybe it's the sense of fiction in the first game. Sometimes, a fictional, imaginary looking setting is quite bad for a shooter games, but in Carnivores 1, it really did work, with the sky blue lakes, massive ferns and vibrant ground. In Carnivores 2, the settings are more, well, boring- being four times as big as the locations in Carnivores, it's just a chore having to trudge all the way up the uninspired, unimaginative woodland for a potential kill- and yes, the areas are all pretty much woodland, except for the odd sand patch here and there. This is all made worse on my computer since the water goes all weird when I turn on run mode, and I can't find any patches to fix this problem. This is presumably since I have windows XP, and the game is intended for 95 or 98. Carnivores 1 works fine on it, though. Weird.
Er, anyway, enough of that whining, onto the main attraction of the game- the dinosaurs. If you want a short summary here it is-they're great. Best dinosaurs I've EVER seen on any game, and I'm not kidding there. They do get blocky when you go right up to them, but, let's face it, when it comes to the game you aren't gonna have time to look at them close up- they'll either run away if herbivorous, or mall you if carnivorous. And the AI is, er, okay, even though it is a bit on the simple side, but thinking about it real-life dinosaurs would be too dumb to think out any advanced stealth strategies anyway. They are all perfectly animated and coloured, and the audio for the dinosaurs- and infact the entire game- is just great. Each dinosaur has its own unique call, and, as the dino gets bigger, its call gets scarier. I just wanted to wimp out and hide behind a bush the first time I heard the ceratosaurus roar. The only problem with the dinosaurs in the game is that hunting them can get incredibly frustrating- you just want to kick something when a chasmosaurus is in your line of sight, you're just about to make the final shot, and... it catches wind of you and runs off. This goes for all the dinosaurs, including the carnivores (although they will of course charge if you get too close); infact, the only dino not liable to run off like a ninny when smelling you is the T-rex, the true hard man-er, dinosaur- of the game.
The weapons are average. I can't really saying anything more than that. They aren't bad, per se, but they aren't fabulous either. They are all of the shotgun, pistol, sniper rifle sort.
Right, so, what it all boils down to is: is this game worth getting if you've already got the original game. For me, all it's pros overrule the cons, so, yes, I do recommend it to anyone interested.
Fun, but a little bit difficult

Carnivores 2 is fun,but I can never seem to be able hunt the dinosaurs without a cheat code on. They are constantly running away. The graphics of the game are okay. The sound is great. The dinosaurs make pretty creative noises when you make calls to them. The controls are excellent. And if you don't like the default controls, you can customize them so thay are easier to handle. So overall I give this game four stars.
