Carnivores- original dino game

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 0 / 1
Date: June 25, 2006

Despite being a bit on the simple side compared to some other hunting games, Carnivores is a pure original and still goes as an unmatched classic.
The storyline to Carnivores is not exactly pure genius, but what's the point in making up a complicated plot and then not using it in the game? Apparently, starship FMM UV-32 landed on planet full of dangerous dinosaurs, and the crew realised that they could profit by allowing experienced hunters access to the big game of prehistory. Fair enough.
Now. The game itself. Well, if you're not one for dinosaurs clawing at your throat or bad weapon sound effects, then give this one a miss. But even so, I think many buyers will be surprised by this game's addictiveness and basically fun. It's great to try running away from an angry T-rx, even when you know you're not gonna escape it. And it's even good to get a little frustrated after missing a rare dinosaur, it's just the essence of the game.
The gameplay is okay. The menu has four options: 'hunt,' 'options,' 'credits' and of course 'quit.' Oh yes, and there's the trophy room, where you can browse your kills by going right up to their stuffed forms. Quite rewarding, actually. In carnivores, there ae no set missions- you can hunt what you want where you want; there's no specific limit of kills in a single hunt. I suppose you do have to earn points to hunt bigger, more dangerous dinosaurs, weapons, and locales. These come under three categories: novice, advanced, and expert.
The dinosaurs are all right, and look great when you first see them. But as you study them more, you may begin to realise some major flaws, such as the fact that you can see right into the mouth of the stegosarus when facing it head-on. But they're not bad. Not bad at all. And they all move smoothly and realistically, except possibly the stegosaurus, which waddles along like a constipated pig when it trys to flee. And the sounds aren't all convincing. You'll laugh when hearing the Triceratops 'call,' and the T-rex footsteps sound a bit too metallic. But there's nothing genuinely wrong with them and I reckon they pass.
The weapons are terrible! Okay, maybe that was a bit harsh, but seriously, there's only three of them, and I dont like any of them. The shotgun doesn't reload, the crossbow is unrealistic, and the sniper rifle sounds like someone rubbing bits of sandpaper together. Awful.
I love the locations, however. There's only five of them, but they are all completely different. The woods of Turan Choks is a brilliant beginners map, but possibly the best is the final map, the Great Lake. I also love the way they've created an atmosphere in each different area. The Jungls of Gravitsappa are buzzing with activity and hve a somewhat jolly feel, but the Pyramids of Shmu Hadron are quiet, and sort of tense. It's very enjoyable in each one, generally.
So, what do I rate Carnivores in general? Well, to be honest, I've given it a five. This clever game incorporates good hunting enjoyment, prehistoric creatures, and massive maps to generally bring home one terrific game- er, apart from the weapons aspect.

Dont get me wrong i like a lot of hunting games but this 1 captures it in a ceratin way. Now u the hunter must watch ur back. Stalk and be stalked through dense fogs and mountains terain in search for the dinasour of a life time or the jaws of a T-REX. this game has awsome 3D ENVIRONMENTS. great sound and the animal AI is pretty good. I'd recomend this to anyone. But id wait for Carnivores 2. it should have all this game has and more.

Easily the best of all the PC hunting games that have been released since the smash-hit DEER HUNTER, CARNIVORES is top notch, even for a "value title." Excellent, 3D-accelerated graphics combine with atmospheric stereo sound to create a taut and suspenseful first-person hunting experience. The animal AI is sophisticated enough to give even the most jaded PC hunter a jump or two (or more) and, overall, gameplay is better here than in similar games at twice the price.

If there are any flaws, they have to do with the game's depth. A small selection of firearms and equipment, combined with the game's focus solely on the "stalk and kill" variety of scenarios, guarantees CARNIVORES' shine will dim quickly, which is unfortunate, as multiplayer or "capture the flag" modes would have added months to the game's lifespan.

Still, there's no better value for the price. Dinosaurs, high-powered weapons and the chance of being a T-Rex snack makes for big fun, whether the hunting game genre is your thing, or not.

Despite my high ratings for the game, Carnivores, I would like to say what I think would have made the game more fun. For one thing, the carnivores of the game: Allosaurus, Velociraptor, and Tyrannosaurus Rex, only attack you, the hunter. What they should do, along with attacking you, is attack and kill other dinosaur species in the game. Many a time did the idea of shooting one of the non-huntable dinosaurs come to mind, so that I could lure one of the carnivores to my location. Another thing I was hoping for, was interaction between the species, but to no avail. The game is still fun, and I give it *****.
