Build a Better Rome

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 3 / 3

This game is almost like Age of Empires and SimCity put together. You are a governor of a province and start as a citizen and work your way up to caesar. Many people say this game is hard. It isn't. I have never once failed a mission, but I have suffered the consequences of disobeying Caesar and the Gods. Each province you have different resources and things you can build. The houses your people live in are influenced by a couple things: Water, Food, Security, Desirability, Goods, and Services. Your houses start as tents and work their way up to Grand Palaces. Overall this is a game that no gamer can be without.

fun game, more playing options than demo

I've played the Caesar series since #1 and enjoyed them all. Unlike the other reviewers, I have to say I thought this edition was a little easier. One minor, picky complaint is that they don't use the latin based names for the two kinds of schools as they did in Caesar II. You can choose a course emphasizing military defense or development. I chose mostly defense because it was more fun to watch the barbarians. Game has more than what is just in its demo.

I bought Caesar III soon after I found the demo on a computer at home. I've been hooked ever since. Through difficult adaptation, I have advanced through many ranks. It's a lot of un if you want to distract yourself from life for a few hours at a time. I highly recommend Caesar III to anyone with an analytical immagination.

The only bad part about it is the fact that it takes up all of your free time. So I have a clock by my computer to let me know when my time for the day is up. That is the only bad part about the game. So I still very hightly recommend this game to anyone up for a challenge.

Still a great game after all these years

It may not have the graphics of a Half-Life 2, but where this one wins is in its addictive gameplay. As you're building your city, you'll build different buildings to feed, house and entertain them. The interactions of the properties of the buildings along with the desires of your citizens creates a complex system that you'll need to tweak and balance in order to prosper. This complexity is part of what makes the game great--each building is affected by its neighbors, and you won't want to quit playing until you get the right balance of doctors, markets, and theaters in each of your neighborhoods. It isn't easy, especially as you get to the higher levels, but the combination of challenge and addictive play keeps me coming back.

Caesar III is, in a word, mediocre. When I bought the game I was expecting a graphically rich and advanced game ala "Pharaoh," "Zeus," or even "Caesar II." What I got was what looked like a glorified demo of a really really good game. The designers of Caesar III started out with a great thought and made some thoughtful improvments to Caesar II such as the addition of a senate house for each town and a governor's house, palace, and villa for residing in. They also added 5 separate gods you must appease and keep happy (that's the hard part, don't neglect them). I think the best improvement they made over its predecessor was that there is no separate "city" and "province" map (Caesar II owners will know what I mean and share in my frustration over this) that made the game almost impossible to win (I never won one, I always went broke.)

So Caesar III's designers made some improvements, but they also did a few things I'm not happy with. The game has a dark and despressing ambience that can only keep me playing for about an hour (which translates to about 10 minutes, city-building time, lol). It's also difficult to make money which has made me become dependant on the money cheat (go to impressionsgames.com for details). It's difficult to keep your people fed even when you make the best use out of the usually limited farming area. My last gripe is that you have to keep building prafectures and those architects post all the time that cost money and manpower. It's a good game, don't get me wrong, it could just be a little better, no wait, A LOT better. I didn't get what I was expecting, I didn't even get an instruction book. My suggestion: buy Caesar II if they still make it and enjoy that.

Awesome Game, But Way Too Addicting!

This game is very similar to the SimCity games, but set in the Roman Empire. I used to own SimCity 2000, and loved it, but Caesar 3 is even better. The only problem with it (and SimCity too) is that it is too addicting. I can easily find myself playing for 5 hours at a time, while most video games bore me in less than 30 minutes. Of all the video games I've ever played, Caesar 3 is my favorite!

A fun game

This is a very historic game. You can actualy get real cities and after you get done with a few goals its on to the next level but dont get me wrong this is a tuff game. I get discouragedged and feel like beating the crap out of my computer sometimes. If your good enough you can actually get to be caesar. I have never goten to be caesar, hey but nobody's perfect except for God right.

get hooked!

This is one game I never tire of. It's challenging and engrossing. There aren't tons of puzzles to work out, it is fairly straightforward on gameplay. This game works for so many age groups and will get those who soon tire of complicated puzzle games on the road to fun!

No Weaknesses

This game is very good. Many people say this game is alot like Sim City, but its not. This game is much better than Sim City, the fact that the buildings you make are ten times better is just one of the difference. Second is, Caesar III has more objectives that are alos better, and keep the game going longer and longer.

good game

Graphics are very real looking, the sound is alright. There are many things that you can select to build your very own Rome. It is one of my personal favorite games. It is worth your time and money.
