Great Games.

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 11 / 11

This has 6 classic games: Asteroids, Centipede, Missile Command, Tempest, Super Breakout, and Pong. I especially enjoyed pong. This is a great value, since versions of each of the games are sold by themselves for $20.

Can I have another quarter? Can I have another quarter?

If, after you sink into these 6 classic Atari arcade games, you start to smell pizza or hear other voices, don't panic. It's just your mind bringing back memories of when you first played them. THAT'S how good these recreations are.

Compared to today's 3D arcade first-person shooters, these games might seem primitive but they can claim something that modern games can't: anyone and everyone played them. The controls were simple, usually consisting of a single knob or joystick and a couple buttons. You dropped in a quarter and you played.

When you went to the bowling alley or pizza parlor, you saw senior citizens standing shoulder to shoulder with teens at the PONG game. A father and daughter might be huddled in front of Tempest. A child barely tall enough to reach the trackball and buttons on Missile Command has already finished 12 levels. A grandmother has just been introduced to Asteroids and now, there's no tearing her away. A small crowd is gathering around the Super Breakout game because someone has just cleared a third wall of bricks on the first ball. And a weekend lawn warrior is exacting revenge on his leaf-munching adversaries in Centipede.

Those games live again, as does a feeling for what it was like to have lived back then, in Atari Arcade Hits. In addition to the exact recreations of 6 of Atari's landmark arcade games, the CD ROM includes a wealth of extra material including photos, promotional materials and over a half hour of Atari founder Nolan Bushnell reminiscing about the times. That segment was actually taped at the former Andy Capp's Saloon where the world was introduced to the first coin-operated PONG.

NOTE: Games requiring a knob or "paddle" controller are best played with a good quality trackball like the Logitech Marble Mouse Trackball, which I've reviewed elsewhere on Amazon.com

Great value on price. You get what you pay for.

Great Value on item price wise, but you get what you pay for. This item contains several of the original games from Atari 2600. They are nothing compared to recent revised versions of various classics. I wouldn't pay more than 12 dollars for this item.

I can't say enough about this set of Atari games. I actually found these more fun than games made today. The quality of this PC version is identical to the old coin-op. The only thing missing is the line of quarters stacked on the machine if you're old enough to remember that. I found the minimum system requirements to be less than adequate for authentic quality game play. A 400mhz with 128megs RAM will give you perfect results. There is a customization menu where you can make the games easier or harder depending on you, or your kids, skill level. There is a set of video interviews of Nolan Bushnell, the brains and bucks behind Atari, which provides insight to how it all got started. His presentation really takes you back to the glory days of coin-op. You can't miss with this set of games. I'd be willing to pay twice the price to have this much fun.

Skip this and get the Millennium Edition instead

I will admit I don't have the millennium edition of this collection, but I bought an earlier version (1999 to be exact), and these games work just as good as they do in the arcade; Microsoft's Arcade (made in 1993) seems cardboard compared to this. If you're thinking about buying THIS collection, you're gonna feel ripped off compared to the millennium edition (or Atari's Greatest Hits 1 and 2). Great games, but I would still recommend you try Volume 2 out. (Crystal Castles, Millipede, and Warlords to name a few.) You may remember them back from the 1980s.

Loads of fun!

You'll have hours of fun laughing at how out of date these golden oldie Atari games now appear. Remember when we were SO intrigued by them? I'm happy to say these games are still fun to play.

Missle Command had me rolling on the floor! Pong is a nonstop laugh riot! The music on Asteroids is what does it for me most though.

Everything is in it's original form. You'll be so glad you have these games to play once again. They will bring you back to a time when technology had not yet gone out of control. They'll make you marvel at how far we have come!

Atari Arcade Hits #1 is definitely worth the ten bucks! PLAYER BEWARE: They may make you feel old.

A journey back in time

I purchased this game set about a year ago. I was amazed how the graphics looked just like they did when I was a teenager. The designers even included a console look with one and two player buttons so it gives the look of the original arcade machines. The sounds are original as well. It brings back memories of the early years before I was old enough to drive. I would walk several miles to the local quick stop to play these games in their arcade. These games remind me of a time when things were much simplier. I hope to find my all time favorite game Donkey Kong Jr. I recommend this collection for anyone who wants to take a trip down memory lane.

When I first played the games on this CD-ROM, I thought I had travelled through a time warp back into the arcades of the early 80's! It's great to be able to play your favorite arcade games that you once played years ago (I think I'm telling my age!). I got lots of enjoyment out of it.
