People are being harsh with this game, imo. I loved Transformers as a kid and I looked forward to this game/ and movie. That said, neither is disappointing. No, this is NOT a Chronicles of Riddick, but my kids are having fun with it. Its probably more kid-oriented because the kids seem to like it more than me. The gameplay lacks a little bit. For instance, the cars are hard to control, etc. The graffix are great, though.
Bottomline, I give it 3-4 stars, but my kids would all probably give it 5 easy. Buy it if your kids like Transformers, maybe pass on it if you dont. Thats my 2 cents.

It is a fun game for both my boys. It would have been nice if it were two players though. But they do love the game.
Thumbs UP!

The game was for my children and they love it! Transformers is their favorite movie and the game has renewed their love for the genre.
Traveller's Tales must be stopped, no matter the cost.

Authors note: My three star review was based on first impression, after completing a large portion of the game I would like to be able to change my review to two stars, but their system will not allow it.
When I saw the first released footage of this game my jaw dropped. The visuals looked incredible; ultimately the final product lived up to that hype in the graphics department, but fell short everywhere else. The problem is, once you get past the visuals and the overall feel the game creates of being a giant robot able to Transform. Once you get past that the entertainment value drops quickly and then, well then the game deludes into a repetitive nightmare that will haunt gamers. When it's good, it's ok. When it's bad, it's a bore and it's a lot of repetition that often requires luck and not skill to complete.
As with so many movie titles before it Transformers is throw away big screen to game adaptation. The problem is with movie games like Chronicles of Riddick the bar has been set a lot higher. With this game once the "wow" factors wears off you get past the very entertaining aspect of: running, climbing, bashing, transforming (worth two or three hours of bliss) once you get past all that there is a very medicore, linear game that is often redundant and often more annoying that challenging. While there is no difficulty selection, I found the game to be about normal. It's not that it was too difficult in spots, it's that the challenging points were not overall very fun. In fact when there is no skill or puzel to solve (when you're ability to complete a mission is based 50% of luck) it's a very, very unpleasant gaming experience.
When you're a fan of specific characters and you're starved for a good TF game you have a choice to make. You make decide to play the game and just enjoy it with "fan blinders" and toss it up to another half-add movie game. Or you can be critical and compare it to the best games of its type around. If you go the later path, you will absolutely HATE this game. Transformers: The Game is essentially a third-person shooter (e.g. God of War) with absolutely zero: puzzle elements, weapon upgrades or compelling combos. It's missions not only lack depth, they lack any coherent store line. One would almost pass it off as another boring piece of movie tie-in "flare" aimed at kids, except most intelligent kids won't have the attention span to keep retrying the dual missions this presents.
For the Transformer fan determined to make it through the game (sense who knows when we'll get another) this will often be a excruciating journey, void of fun, void of anything you remember about the characters as a kid. You may be thinking "this guy probably hates everything" and that's not true. I've submitted a review of the novelization of the upcoming movie which this game is very loosely based on and the book did make me feel 8 years old again, the movie is going to be incredible. But this game will, in some ways rob you of your childhood memories (yes, it is that bad). As tempting as it may be to touch this title, I say stay far away from it.
Regarding the review title. Well, one group of individuals is responsible for this mess of a game (IGN.com called it "a mess" to great amusement, they are spot on). That group is an independant game shop in the UK called Traveller's Tales. They were the hired gun to create this game and they appear to be so ashamed of it they do not even list it on their official website (Google it).
How many poor movie games do we have to play before gamers say ENOUGH. Game publishers like to put as little money as possible into these type of games, because their assumption is that the movie brand will sell the game without the game needing to hold any weight.
If you're tired of spending sixty dollars on a game only to get it home to find a half-baked smoking pile of.... (you get the idea). If you're sick of it, now is the time to act. We have a major blockbuster film here (from all early reviews a very very good action movie) and another very lackluster game trying to pushed at us.
If you have purchased the Traveller's Tales version of the game (this includes the: Wii, PS3, PS2, XBox 360 and PC versions) and feel the same as I do, let's do something about it! Let's boycott Traveller's Tales by refusing to buy their upcoming Lego's Batman title. No doubt the Batman title will be a much better game than Transformers as Traveller's Tales has had it in development a bit longer and it's more along the lines of what they traditionally do. But we can't let them purposely put out a piece of garbage like Transformers: The Game and then expect us to forget about it and buy their other great titles.
The bottom line is, when you load the game up you're going to love it at first, when you realize how much more it could have been and take the fan blinders off you'll be left disappointed, possibly angry.
Great Potential but Poor Implementation

Transformers The Game might seem like a perfect fusion of action-movie sci-fi fun with a Grand Theft Auto free-roam map style. Unfortunately, the game really needed a few more months in development before it could be called finished.
First, the good. The transformation sequences are really cool, as you leap from being a large fighting robot and land as a fast sports car. There are of course a number of different vehicles to choose from, depending on which character you are. You don't get to choose the character, though. You choose a side, good or bad, and then as the storyline progresses you play through as a variety of characters. The mission tree is very linear, and each stage has its own main character and goals.
The cut scenes are relatively short and help to move the story along. You can of course skip them if you want to launch right into destructive mayhem.
You would think with a "town" to explore that there'd be a lot to do and see. And in fact they do have the traditional hidden items for you to gather up from back alleys and such. However, the game is always driving you hard to go to the next spot and start the next mission. When you do, you have very short time limits to get a certain task done - destroy all of the ZZZZs, fight all of the YYYYs, move from point A to B. Sometimes the missions are a combination - move from A to B, destroy a bunch of ZZZZs, move from B to C, destroy a bunch of ZZZZs, and so on.
This is where the game gets extremely frustrating. Missions go on for long periods of time, with repetitive inane tasks, and if you get stuck on one part of the task, you go all the way back to the beginning. That wouldn't be bad if the game controls were responsive and the gameplay itself was sensical. However, the driving controls are just awful. Everyone I've shown the game to agrees on this. So you're trying to run blockades and get from A to B in .2 seconds, and the car slides a little - so you run into an immovable sign. Never mind that you were just pushing aside cop cars and military tanks as if they were fleas. This sign just won't let you past, the car won't reverse properly, and your time limit runs out. Restart.
There are all sorts of corners that you should be able to fit through, that your vehicle gets inexplicably stuck on. You have a great array of guns, but the enemies seem to need to get light poles thrown at them before their shields go down. Half the time you are pointed right at the enemy, but somehow the targetting reticule isn't quite there and your gigantic bus you're throwing misses them. Other times, you simply cannot target them - your robot locks into position either 90 degrees left or right of where you want to throw.
Once you finish a given mission, the "mission start spot" remains on the world map so that you can go back and replay it if you wish. However, many of these mission start spots are in key intersections in the street network - so when you're racing along trying to get to another mission, it jams you up and asks you to accept or decline the previous mission before you can continue. On the other hand, several times when you're trying to get to a green target spot, and clearly go through the green spot, the game doesn't recognize it until you back up, turn around and go into it again.
These issues are bad enough for adult gamers who often have built up great skill in driving and camera-work games but I imagine the target audience here is the younger set, the kids who actually play with Transformers. Parents who are buying this game for those younger kids are going to have to deal with the frustration of kids who repeatedly keep trying a mission, only to fail because - while cops have a street barricaded - traffic inexplicably keeps driving right through the barricade and getting in your way.
A great idea, and some of the cut scenes and transformations really are quite neat. However, gameplay needed to be tuned for another few months before it was ready for prime time.
Less then meets the eye

First I will give the pros and cons of this game.
Pros:
- Charactor design is very good. Looks like characters from the movie.
- Interaction with the envirnment. Being able to pick up and throw objects and the distruction of an urban city makes it feel like you are in a true transformers world.
- The voice overs are decent and not over done or cheesy. Real voices from the film is always a plus.
- Range of playable characters is a big plus too. The lack of characters on the transformers game on the ps2 a few years back really plagued that game.
- The story line keeps the game going. Some movie to game have a real boring story line when trying to adapt a film script to a video game. Transformers does a nice job keeping the flow going.
Cons:
- Controls are difficult, especially while transformed. Driving is just plain frustrating. Alot of botton mashing while fighting other robots.
- Lack of detail for the surrounding environment. I still find it strange that after a year and half of the 360 on the market game developers still do not use the full power of this console.
- Way too many cut scenes. This does slow down the action of the game.
- Repetitive game play. No strategy what so ever. Like I said, alot of botton mashing.
- Not much room for free roam. The setting is just to small for this game.
- I dont understand the purpose of having weapons when every robot has an energy shield. The only way to defeat a ememy is either throwing objects or melee. This does not make much sense.
I did give this game 3 stars because it does have good aspects to it, but it is not worth $59.99. I would wait for this bad boy to drop in price before purchase.
Pretty good game

This game is no Halo but if your a transformers fan or a fan of these games I would play it, some of the action sequences are pretty challenging and fun and the graphics are gorgeous. Good sound and CGI animation as well.
not really more than meets the eye...

This game is okay. That pretty much sums it up. It's definitely not more than meets the eye. Sure, it has fantastic graphics, and just about everything in the environments can be picked up, blown up, or smashed, but the gameplay is VERY repetetive, and the controls are often very jumpy. The Decepticons have some of the cooler robots, but they also get a bit repetetive. It's definitely fun to play for a short while, but not over extended periods of time. Rent this one and save your money for the MUCH more worthwhile Transformers film.

The movie is a 5 stars hands down with two thumbs up... no question bout it.
The game has potential it's true, cool graphics, but the cut scenes look like made to get over with fast and even silly comparing the sequence and concept to the movie... and the missions, very repetitive and annoying sometimes... Big trans fan trust me.. but they could've made it perfect instead of almost.
