This is a very excellent game. When I first played it was very hard so I put in some game genie cheats. But I was determined to beat it the traditional way. But any way, you own a farm and you have it for 2 years and then your parents come and it is the end of the game. You basicly just buy crops or animals and make money and make a family and much more. A must buy.

Wow..., a good game, basically. You play as some guy on a farm, and can grow plants livestock, pretty much everything however you want. there's a long line of HARVEST MOON games stretching to the gamecube, but a word of advice: dont buy the PS2 and GCN versions, there horibble.
The original classic.

When I first found this, I had absolutely no idea that this game would be so good. All I really wanted was just a little break from Squaresoft RPGs, but what I got was the first game in a whole new awesome series.
By now, everyone knows what Harvest Moon is all about: You have a certain number of years to run a successful ranch by farming crops, raising animals, and selling various kinds of produce. You upgrade your tools into stronger and more efficient ones, and you visit town to buy things or talk to people.
Now, I've played the PSX version, Harvest Moon: Back to Nature as well. Although that one is excellent (and, from what I hear, better than the N64 version), I have to agree with the other reviewer, Bart: This game just has a classic "feel" about it that the others can't quite match. Maybe it's the style, or maybe it's just because it was the original and the first one I played. I don't know.
Anyway though, if you can still find this game in any capacity, get it. And then, after you've seen what it's like, grab the Playstation and Game Boy versions. They may not be exactly the same or inspire that same feeling, but you certainly won't be disappointed either.
The addicting game

The Game-10/10 Harvest moon, a farming simulation game, is a very unique game with a good story line to back it up. Being 110% original, this game contains more secrets and things to explore than any other game I have played. With the exception of being a highly difficult game, this makes playing all the more addicting. As you are playing, there are goals you feel you must meet, but only if you are a serious player. Natsume has created a flawless entertainment game;yet, the company is often misunderstood. All the people I have ley play this game feel they must go out and buy one of their own; what can I say, I would do the same thing.
Difficulty-10/10 Although some people think this game is for kids, I am sure a kid would never be able to fathom the world of harvest moon. The game requires a large quantity of work and effort to attain the simplist of things, such as photos for your album and falling in love with another character. Aside from eing difficult, the game will force you into eing responsible foe animals and your social life. Secrets, photos, and being friends with every person in the game requires patience and skill.
Music/Sound-10/10 Harvest Moon has different toons for each of the four seasons you play within the year. To my suprise, these repeting songs don't seem to become annoying because you are so focused on the game. As well as good sounds, the game contains many songs for festivals and events. An example of a well done sound effect is when you are nearing the end of a horse race and the crowd begins to cheer, or even the church bells that ring when you are getting married. These are all classic toons that help the game be original.
Secrets-10/10 This game totals over 100 secrets that are not facile to achieve. To acquire every power berry, requires great skill and curiosity to explore. I have played over 200 hours on this game and I never cease to discover something I have never seen before, such as a social event or more secrets. Anyone who thinks they have found all there is to find should think twice before making that statement final.
Overall-10/10 Harvest Moon is the second best game I have ever played because it prooves to be so difficult;yet, the Star Ocean series requires more effort and skill because the bosses are etherial and just about impossible to beat. Because Harvest Moon uses all the old fashioned farming tools and storylines, this is a game worth playing forever. Pricing at $40 to $50 in your local gamecrazy prooves that it is a rare antique that is hard to find. This game will never get boring due to all that is has to offer, and I asvise others to play this game to find out for themselves.
Excelant Game, you have to play it!

This may only be the first in a great series but this game has that feeling none of the other harvest moon games have. In my opinion I like this Harvest moon game the best.It may not have sheep or all those festivals and events but the gameplay has that touch others dont. There are so many different things to do and get that i never got the same complete ending twice. I strongly advise you to try this game!
One of the best games I've ever played!

When I got this game, I really didn't know what it was, but after playing it for about 15 minutes, I was hooked! This game might be old, but it's VERY addictive. No matter how good the graphics are in a game, the most important factor is the overall gameplay. And Harvest Moon's gameplay is AWSOME!
Thus, a classic has been born.

Harvest Moon- an underestimated RPG:
Harvest Moon opens a whole other door in RPG gaming world. Instead of a violent stat/level RPG, this game is a peaceful role play of a farmer's life. It may not sound great at first, but this classic is as addicting as Tetris and Pacman (just a lot more fun!).
Graphics: (4/5) Considering this is an old school game, the graphics are pretty darn good. I love all of the detailed farm matter, such as the indented rocks with signature Japenese anime marks on them. And with the weeds, every little stem and leaf is visible in great detail and color. I love the brightness of the game, it just puts me in a pretty good mood. The only problem with the graphics is the people. The farmer looks pretty cool. But aside from that, the people are stick thin and dont have much of a face. Yet since this is an old school game, I give a ton of credit for the graphics.
Story (3/5) This is probably the game's worst point. The only part of story is this 15 second cutscene with barely any dialogue at the start. Basically, the farmer's parents see how much can be accomplished within 2 and a half years... and drive off in their car to the airport to go to ditch their kid and go to Disney World (just kidding about that part.) So meh, the storyline is ok.
Controls (5/5) Well, what more can I say. The controls are easy and simple to use. Every button has a use... so that's the scoop. Since I played this game so long ago, I appologize for not having a list of the controls (my memory only goes back so far...)
Gameplay (5/5) This is what lead to other Harvest Moon games... the amazing and unique style of gameplay. Farming may not sound so great, right? But in this game, there are TONS AND TONS of options of what to do. Because time stops at 6 o'clock, the possibilities are ENDLESS.
To start, getting your house upgraded is really cool. I love how new furniture is added to the living space, and the ultra house is so big, nice, and spacious! Also, without upgrades the house would be plain and boring for the 2 1/2 year gamespan. Even though there are only two upgrades in this game, Natsume thought outside of the box with Harvest Moon 64's 5+ upgrades.
Next, after the fields have been weeded and have been cleared, comes crops and grass. Planting crops is the main money making system for this game. Each bag of crops covers a 3 by 3 space, making nine crops in total. That is how you make the big profits. With an entire field of crops, planting will make your farmer turn from rags to riches in a matter of days. When that income is yours, try planting some grass (again, in a 3 by 3 space.)The grass makes fodder (food) for your animals, so once enough fodder is gained, raising livestock would be another responsibility.
Ok, once the grass has been sickled into fodder, its time to purchase the animals. There are two kinds of animals to raise (aside from the horse and dog which require nothing)- cows and chickens. The barn in this game is extremely big, holding up to 12 cows. With that much livestock, a $1300+ profit can be made everyday. Next come chickens. Chickens are very easy to take care of and lay an egg each day if you feed them. Chickens are also affordable, as you can breed your own flock with just one. Do this by placing an egg in the incubator and wait one full week.
Finally comes marriage. I believe there are four girls that you can marry in this game. Simply give them gifts (eggs, storebought gifts, etc.) every day and eventually their heart level will raise. Once it is at a certain level, you can propose using the blue feather. Once married, farm life will change. If you have played other HM games, you'll notice you can only have one kid. But in this, you can have up to three children.
Overall (4.5/5) Overall this is a great game that is enjoyable for all ages. From farming to raising cattle, this game has been a blast for every gamer who has tried it. Since this game is extremely rare and expensive, finding it at a yardsale of fleamarket would be the best and cheapest way. Of course if you wanted it now, get a used one off of this site.
one of the best games ever
