Shameless plagarism - I LOVE IT!

As with other reviews, it'd be easy to begin with gameplay comparisons to GTA, as there's no doubt THQ programmers 'borrowed' many elements from Rockstar's staple franchise... But so what? Many development houses learn from their peers and try to improve on its awesomeness - or just try to match it. If comparisons to GTA must be made, aside from stock GTA gameplay elements, it's probably most akin to GTA San Andreas. Specifically the gang turf block wars section where you fight gangs on the street or complete missions to convert blocks of the city to your colors.

Saints Row is all about respect. You perform minor missions (called activities) such as escorting hookers or creating carnage on a big scale and this gives you respect - get enough respect and a main mission will open up. Complete a main mission and the block is yours - earning you cash every week. The storyline is usual fodder for these sorts of games - rival gangs are in your turf and you have to defeat them - by destroying their music HQ, stealing their drugs etc.

In graphics are considerably improved over the GTA franchise. Stunning view distances, burning vehicles create haze, water looks incredible, and the architecture is almost on par with PGR3 in places. The cut scenes especially show the engine off - with depth of field blurring and nice sfx. Sonically things are equally good - no complaints.

So I'm about 9% in (around 7 hours) and loving it. I like to drive around and check out the scenery - do what I want when I want and Saints Row let's me. (Sadly I keep driving around looking for unique jumps!). So yes - it's a GTA type game. It's great fun and looks 1,000 times better than its inspiration.

Had rockstar released a GTA game for the 360 I would probably not rate this game as high - but for now it's well worth your money and should tide you over until GTA4 comes out. Go get it bro!

great game

how can i explain what makes it a little better the GTA... well imagine any thing that annoyed you in GTA or any problem that needed fixing and you will find it in this game, for one thing its easier then GTA, so many things you discover that are new even if you had it for a while, i have a feeling this game will disapear and fall in sales when GTA for PS3 comes out but hey thats not for a long long time, yes more delays from Sony

what i love about this game is when the cops come to your hood and you entire gang starts shooting at them, also unlike GTA when the cops arrest you and you come out you still have your wepons!!!!

I thought the xbox-360 would offer alot more

I was going to wait for the PS3 to be my next generation system, but I took a chance on this game and bought the xbox-360. The major problem this game has is the overwhelming amount of glitches. You would think that high definition gaming would counteract these horrible miscues but that is definitely not the case. Overall the game looks and plays better than GTA, but I ve only had it for a month and I cant play it any more because all sorts of things just continually appear and dissapear before my eyes and I cant deal with that. I hope GTA4 fixes these bugs when it is released in October 2007.

GTA Clone - but still good

To some this games game play in a nutshell, it's basically Grand Theft Auto. What Havok and THQ have done is build on top of the GTA formula. First of all they have put in a very in depth character customization, which makes it feel a little more like it could be you in the game, or at least a difference from your buddy's game. The vehicle customization is pretty good as well. What I like most about the vehicle customization is you save your vehicles in your home base, so if you even blow it up or leave it you can always get it back with all the modifications you've done. Another nice touch made was you can have your gang members with you at pretty much any given time. It's cool having your crew there just to roll with you while you wreak havoc on the city, or if you need the extra firepower in a mission. Visually the game is very pleasing with a good variety of environments and vehicles to select from, unfortunately there's no bikes. Gameplay feel, honestly it feels pretty much identical to GTA tight controls with good old fashion open ended game play, and well I don't really have any complaints with that. We're all waiting for the next Grand Theft Auto to come out, this will satisfy the hunger for most GTA fans until Rock Star comes out with their version. Definitely recommend picking this one up.

This is alike to Grand Theft Auto but a lot better. This is a MUST HAVE for all mature gamers. This is one of my favorite games.

The game if fun, sometime it's just the right thing to drive around and see how many stars you can get so that the cops come looking for you like it's cool. You can end up with a rocket launcher and a heck of a nice assult riffle as well. Plus their vehicles are pretty cool as well, I've got them all in my garage.

I think I've found and kept all the various vehicles in the garage, got to collect them all. The new clothing options that are out now for download are rather good as well. It's nice to be able to mix things up all over the game.

Graphics: They are pretty good but I think they could have made somethings a little better, but then again this game was put out not all that long ago so maybe the next version will have much better improved graphics for us to be able to enjoy the game all the more. reguardless there is nothing like HD gaming on this type of game. Blowing stuff up, steeling cars, shooting up the block, running people over and so on.

Weapons: There is a nice selection of weapons to be had from grenades, pipe bombs, hand guns, rifles, assult weapons, clubs, knives and so much more.

A great way to get your frustrations out from work, driving, the not so bright people you have to deal with in the stores and so on.

Carnage Fun!!

Very fun game, very similar to the GTA Series, even better in certain areas. Although lacking air and sea vehicles and no motorcycles, but the variety of vehicles and missions makes up for it.

Some nice game play features in this game - like store hold up, reviving dead team members.
But story line missions seems shorter than gta games.

A fun way to kill some time.

You can't deny that Saint's Row carries many similarities to the GTA series. This may be a good game for you if you really must have something to play while waiting for the release of the next GTA game. Some things like flight, motorcycles, bicycles, and boats will be missed by some fans of the GTA series, but many things like drive-by shooting, and steering AI for NPCs has seen some improvements over ever popular GTA.

I'm sorry to compare the two games so much, but it almost seems like the best way to review this, is to compare it to the games that it is obviously trying to emulate. The creators themselves even said that they wanted their game to look better, play better, and sound better, and generally be even more fun than Rockstar's hit series. You'll want to check this out, and look for Saints Row 2, hopefully later in 2008!

a.k.a. GTA: Glitch City

Saints Row is an online-enabled Grand Theft Auto, with a "hardcore gansta" body kit.

For the most part, it's a decent game. There's definitely some quality gameplay inside this box. I especially enjoy the highly customisable character appearance.

A few gameplay innovations address some of the complaints GTA received, and there were also some interesting new mingames but I didn't find anything truly revolutionary to warrant all the hype this game received.

In fact, for every innovation that added to this game there seemed to be a glitch that detracted. My favourite, the "Where did my car go?" glitch, causes your vehicle to disappear for no apparent reason. When this happens, your character comes to an abrupt halt, stuck in mid air. I could find no way to begin moving again or exit the "missing" vehicle. This particular glitch repeated itself every time I attempted one particular mission, rendering the game completely unplayable from that point forward.

Even though there were some fun minigames, I found the "Respect" system caused them to become quite repetitive. In order to progress with the story you need "respect". In order to get respect, you must complete side job after side job ad infinitum. While fun the first few times, they get old fast. Good concept, poor execution.

Still, for its faults there are enough enjoyable qualities to make this game worth playing- just not enough to live up to the hype.

Pros:
-Beautiful scenery
-Highly customisable character
-Celebrity voice overs

Cons:
-Glitches/bugs
-Rep...rep...repetitive
-Too much distance/driving between every point A and point B
