Great multiplayer, so so offline play

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 3 / 3

The online play is fantastic, you participate in an online war that changes whether you're online or not. Partake in missions to turn the tide in your favor, or just to earn some credits for that brand new part.
This is made from the same people as Armored Core and you will notice a large influence from that game, though it is all land based so no flying around and shooting newbs who don't know how to look up yet. (If they released an armored core game in this same format I would give my left nu...kidney for it by the way.)

Single player is almost just a preliminary stage to the online play, which I feel the game was designed for almost exclusively with the offline play being an afterthought. I know that isn't the case, but it's the best way to describe it. You basically pick your class of mech and do the missions they require of you. The better your score, which ranges from D, C, B, A, and S I believe, then the better your reward. If you get an A or S you generally receive an extra part as well.

Online is where you see how extremely fun the game is. I feel it's balanced as no one type of mech is undefeatable, although obviously the veteran players will have much improved versions over your weaponry I still found I was able to get a good amount of kills in and not feel useless or anything. If you really want to make people regret picking on the new guy use heat weapons as most people build their defense against shell weapons, etc.
Strategy is important as there is no radar in this game to detect the enemy, only sonar. If you move you can be detected, like some mech warrior games. If you sneak up behind someone and shoot their weak parts you can literally bring them to their knees in less then half the time it takes to bring them down from their normally heavily armored frontside.
Each part has durability and you can blow up the opponents weapons or just go straight for his core and end it all quite early with some well placed shots from a sniper rifle/cannon.
The variety in weaponry is fantastic, allowing for all sorts of combinations, good and bad.
-You can choose from parrying blades, shotguns, rifles, sniper rifles, machine guns, cannons, missiles, rockets, flame throwers, mines, howitzers, and more!
Like to get up close and personal? You can do it! You can do it all night long!
Like to reach out and touch somebody? We have the perfect assortment of sniper rifles just for you!
Want to shoot someone on the other side of the globe? Use the howitzer for that unexpected bundle of love from a secret admirer!
The best thing is you can mix and match any and all weapons you so desire, weight permitting that is. -Based on the legs you choose amongst other things.

Synopsis: If you're looking for a solid multiplayer mech game with the same customization as Armored Core, even down to the emblems (you can actually place them anywhere you want in this) then read no further.
If you're just an average gamer that isn't really into sci fi or big robots, then it's still going to be a blast shooting highly destructive weapons at big chunks of metal. The special effects are great, with very nice looking explosions and even debris from the ground, like dirt and scrap metal flying up from the big howitzers' explosions.

For the mech fans: 10/10
For the average gamer: 8/10

I thought this game would be a blast to play because the concept is so good. As it turns out, I really don't like the game. Having to build a mech from scratch is pretty cool until you find out that it takes forever to get enough online "currency" to build a mech halfway powerful enough to take more than 2 hits from the mechs long time players have built. If you play Halo 2, just imagine being a level 10 and getting into a rumble match with 7 other level 30's and you have an idea of what it is like to play for the first time on Live. That, of course, is if you can even find a game. You know, a lot can be said for Halo 2's matchmaking. There is always a match to be had and you usually find a match fast against people your own skill level. This just isn't going to happen in Hounds. I mean it took me forever just to figure out how to get a mech until I found the section on buying a complete mech. Then, the one I purchased just got hammered by every other mech on the field. This is only a game for someone with the patience to play through the entire campaign before they play online and build up enough money to buy a great mech. Make sure you rent this game before you buy. I'm soooo glad I rented this thing.

I have to say that Chromehounds is an awesome game. It rocks some places, but it could use some touching up.
When I rented this game, I thought that it would be really complex, but it really isn't too hard. The building system is confusing at first, but you get the hang of it after 10 or so minutes.
I have heard many complaints about the mechs being slow, but I really don't see the problem. If we did make mechs in real life, then the wouldn't be going 70 mph, they'd be going more like 35. So basically, slow is realistic.
It doesn't take too much time to become a pro. What will really make you good is your skill at being in the garage. I've seen an ace take on a noob, and the noob won, because he was creative and efficiante(sorry for spelling) at making HOUNDs.
I really like the graphics. The terrain could deffinatly use some work, though. It looks flat and isn't detailed. The hounds are really detailed, and the explosions are very good looking.
The singleplayer is not worth a tenth of the price. It only helps you to get the hang of the different types of mechs.
Xbox Live is really good. It is comprised of 3 nations warring for the region. Of course, there is also free battles. One of the nations, however is extremelly overpowered.
All in all, this game is awesome, but if you don't have Xbox Live Gold then don't even bother renting it.

Outstanding Mech Game!

I'm not a HUGE fan of the Mech genre, but I do dig it. I've played 3-4 mech games over the years from pc to xbox. This has got to be the top of the line. The graphic and physics are superb. The single player a bit short, but very educational and it takes you through the entire gambit of all the different general types and roles of mechs as used in the game. Honestly, it really is just a glorified trainer for online play and if you don't have a Gold membership online the game is pretty pointless. I can't imagine having a 360 and not having a gold account though.

The real strong suit of the game is online play. While there are an apparently infinite number of pop-up messages and alerts with information I really didn't find useful, once you get through those you're golden. You can be a single player and do match-ups or you can join a squad. That's where the game really shines. Develop and use squad tactics with all the different types of mechs that you can build.

The amount of customization you can do is really amazing. It's really a game in itself. It's easy to use and fairly intuitive and supports folks who just want to slap something together quickly or folks who want to watch and compare stats on various pieces of gear.

There are currently somewhere over 300 unique parts each with a unique size, weight, attachment option, durability, heat generation, etc. Each of these parts can be placed in a dizzying array of orientations. Weapons often have multiple types of ammunition available with options to carry extra ammo at the expense of weight. Chassey units (wheel, biped, tacks, etc) all have weight limits, top speeds, rotation speed, etc. while cockpits have a set number of devices you can attach, internal power supply, various degrees of armor, etc. Cockpits also support 3 types of modification chips that let you trade off statistics between tying together multiple weapons in a single trigger pull, top speed and acceleration boosts, aim and cockpit stabilization, etc.

To really get a feel for the game you have to pay attention to the details on the parts, but for the beginner it's easy enough to just build and shoot. You can even spend your mech $ earned in battles to buy pre-configured mechs. You can also spend your money (which honestly comes flowing in pretty easily and is almost always in abundant supply) on upgraded parts or even enter a lottery for experimental parts that are given away daily.

You have control down to the paint jobs, camouflage patters and a nice selection of customizable decals to polish off your masterpiece.

Once you have your mech put together you can select from a number of ongoing battles to drop into with your squad and match up either against the computer or human opponents. Eventually you'll learn to pick your map and battlefield situations to best suit your mech's capabilities. Then you work out a battle plan with your squad members.

Graphics are superb as you would expect with the 360. Of course it's not perfect, but pretty darn good where it counts. Online play is amazing as far as mech games are concerned. It's not as fast paced and nerve twitching as say Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, but it's 110% cool as far as mech games go. IMHO there's a LOT more strategy involved in Chromehounds as opposed to something like GRAW.

Oh, to the DarkDan who commented that he couldn't find the menu options he was looking for in the middle of a mission, he's right, you can't access some options in the middle of a mission but if you hold down the BACK button on the controller for 3 seconds your mech will self-destruct and end the mission so you can exit the game.

So so game

Chromehounds is fine if you really like the mech genre. I'm finding out that I may not really like the mech genre, and this game is helping me solidify that. I've also played Mech Warrior, and I am getting basically the same thing with Chromehounds. Shooting things and blowing them up is fun, of course. However, the environments aren't that interesting. I think the thing about mech games is that they are all one dimensional. You move your mech around and shoot stuff. That's it. I am so tempted to get Armored Core 4, but I am holding back. I so want to love this genre, but I can't. Darn!

The truth about ChromeHounds

ChromeHounds is primarily an XBox Live game. If you do not have XBox Live (gold), do not buy this game. The single player is short, not overly exciting, and is mainly just used as a tutorial and stat-building module for Live play. If you have XBL, read on...

As far as XBL games go, ChromeHounds is one of, if not the, best the service has ever had gracing it's servers. On the surface, the game looks like a new version of MechAssault. However, that is where the similarities end.

ChromeHounds has three main online modes: 1) Single Player, 2)Free Missions, and 3)Persistent world warfare.
The Single Player online games are more like mini-missions. They aren't all that fun, but you do earn money to buy new Hound parts. The Free Mission and Persistent war modes is where CH really shines (the war ends when one country dominates the other two, then the server resets and the war starts all over again).

The online slug fest is one of the most enjoyable experiences you will have playing a game online. Essentially, you build a Hound, alter it to the conditions of the battle field, and duke it out agains your opponent. Similar to MechAssault, but with all the things that held MechAssault back - build your own custom mech, set the conditions of the battlefield, incrdible realism (especially for beign a mech game). I could write all day about the features and merits of online play, but the best thing for you to do would be to get a copy and see for yourself.

The only rough area with the online mode is that the menu system of the lobby could be tuned a little better. Still, it is a minor irritation.

Good game

To start out, I was pretty excited to get this game and couldn't wait to play. At first the environment and the build up was getting me ready to play. It has a great storyline, although it would be cooler if it were a little closer with real geography than fake areas. The game has great ideas, and its a blast to play. The one thing you got to remember is there is never really a perfect game. Several people have ideas on what would make the game better. The one thing we got to hope is that they come out with a expansion or downloads to make the game eventually a even better game.
The controls were very easy, but at times you have brain farts in the heat of battle and instead of switching weapons you drop the map down. The good thing is that everything is quick so even the slightest mistakes you can regain control in seconds. The multiple selections of everything from cannons to mine detectors there are endless variations of hounds. There are little problems but they are easily fixable. For an example there was a level that three hounds were getting in front of each other shooting the one in front killing each other (dumb AI). But I gave a little nudge to the guy in front and pushed him over and everything was fine.
I haven't played too much online yet, I am doing what was recommended and play story mode first and gain as much parts and then compete against the others.
To sum it up, the game is fun if you have the creativity and like to blow things up.

XBox Gold Makes This Game Golden

Yes you probably seen by now that single player isnt that fun. This is true, but its meant to basically get you familiarized with how to play the real game, multiplayer on xbox live. This game is VERY ADDICTIVE if you have xbox live. Im only giving it 4 stars overall though since they should have improved gameplay for folks that do not have live. But if you have xbox live GET THIS GAME!!!

Not worth $59

This game started with a great concept but was simply badly made. Yes you can make a mech pretty much however you want, but the time it takes to earn the supplies to create one is never worth it, and the mech you could make will never add up to the basic ones you get for missions. The missions are pretty lame, and the fights are boring. When you destroy an enemy it simply "poofs" into a cloud a flame, no debris or wreckage or anything that makes destruction fun! The weapons really aren't interesting and there is a very limited selection of them. On top of that the aiming system is clunky and prevents any kind of fast-paced combat. Those who gave this game a good review must really be hard-up and desperate for a mech game, because otherwise I don't know how they could bare to waste more than an hour of their life on this game!

A one player game for tiger woods fans!

This will be short and to the point. Although the online playing of this game is action packed and faster paced, the one player non-online playing is great. If you are a fan of tiger woods golf games this is a nice relaxing slow alternative. This is not a bad thing either. Many of us older gamers want something slow and easy to play while rocking in our rocking chairs, and when I get bored of golf, I play this. The graphics are outstanding and the gameplay is relatively simple. The game goes along at a nice slow pace until BLAM! Shots fired! Then theres a battle and then its nice and slow again. When you get bored of walking around and shooting at absolutely nothing just to see the cool explosion effect, it's time to upgrade your mech. Not much to it, if you build a better rat trap the rats will beat a path to your door. Anyway, once your mech is all built up in one player, go ahead and get online for the faster paced group missions and rock it out. Very enjoyable.
