I loved the 2k games for Dreamcast and NFL 2K5 was probably the last great football game. I thought All Pro Football 2K8 would usher in a return to greatness for the 2K series. However, after playing the game for roughly three hours, I see that my prediction was grossly incorrect. Let me break it down for you.
The graphics are atrocious. If you didn't know any better you'd swear you were playing an original Xbox game or even a playstation II game. There's clipping; players disappear under the field; the models are some of the worst I've seen on a next-gen console; the animations are recycled from 2K5... I could go on and on, but my main point is that I can't say one good thing about these graphics. Oh and the framerate also sucks.
The gameplay is average. If you liked 2K5, you'll probably like this game a lot because it's a carbon copy of 2K5 albeit without the NFL players. However, if you were expecting more on the 360, you'll be extremely disappointed. The pass plays, run players, and defenses are all EXACTLY the same from 2K5. Did the developers put ANY effort into this game? Defense is boring and offense is awkward. There's nothing like waiting 5+ seconds for your gold star quarterback to even be in position to make a pass. And don't even get me started about receivers stopping after they've completed their routes.
Online play is one area where the game shines, but does it really matter when everything else is so horrible? That's something you'll have to decide for yourself. As for me, my copy already went on eBay.
Value is nonexistent. Remember when this game was fun and used to cost $29.99 AND it had all the NFL players in it? Now it's $59.99 with no NFL players and the gameplay is the terrible.
Better luck next time, Visual Concepts.
Great football...

I'm a 2k football fan, and this version didn't disappoint me. Since 2k Sports was shut out of the NFL game a few years back, and I've played a few of the EA offerings in the meantime, the controls take quite awhile to get used to again. The amount of pre-snap adjustments one can make is daunting, but you'll get used to it.
The CPU plays a good game. I particularly like the motion and shifts the AI gives you on defense. The graphics...well, the animations are great! Putting in a more realistic looking field surface would have done wonders for this game.
I'm having a blast with this game. There's a lot to be said for handing off to Walter Payton, throwing to Jerry Rice from Johnny Unitas, clobbering the QB with Reggie White, etc. I recommend this game!

First off-
This Game is 100% better than anything EA/Tiburon/Madden has produced the past 3 years. Matter of fact, Madden should remove his credentials from EA.
Graphics are Killer, even on my TV which is not HiDef.
Game play is very realistic-
I struggled at 1st, but then realized this is not madden and I really can't throw a 100 yard bomb while running in circles. You need to play this game like Football and not an arcade game.
Player AI is tuff. You can't run the ball up the gut for 5 yards each time on FB fake left as you can in madden.
Create a player is cool, and very detailed. My fiancee was wondering how I uploaded my picture, of which I didn't.
The game does lack some depth, however I'm optimistic that this is sorta like a Beta 2k9 football and they will add onto it for furture releases.
I should point out, this is my 1st 2k football game.
That being said, I've been a madden die hard since the begining. As anyone who has been a Madden Fan, you know the disappointment from the past 3 years.
I was worried when 1st read EA got exclusive rights to produce NFL football games. My worries become truth when EA released a much scaled down versoin on the 360, then followed that up with another crappy release.
I thank the boys/gals in 2k for bypassing the NFL and Players Union and putting some creative thinking together to stay "in the game". A slogan of which EA should drop.
If you like football, and don't mind your team being called something other than vikings, packers etc, then this game is for you. Keep in mind, you can create all your NFL superstars on this game, as well as rename stadiums etc. I do hope 2K will add some depth to the game, such as Dynasty, Hall of Fame Games, etc for Future Release.
Bottom line. It felt like I was cheating on a girlfriend by crossing the line from Madden to 2k. However Now I'm on this side and seeing the light-
Dump EA until they offer a 120 bones I blew on Madden 360 games. There should be a law suit to be honest.

The Core game play of 2K8 is solid and fun, but there are a couple of areas that really keep this from being a great football game.
#1. Kicking - The kicking mechanic is almost broken. The concept behind it is interesting (use the right analog stick based on the foot movement of the kicker) but in practice it is way too hard. I practiced numerous times, and was never able to figure out exactly what the game was looking for to ensure a decent kick. I reread the instructions, used practice mode and kept playing the game, but I could never get it down. It became horribly frustrating, because it has a very real impact on the game (field position, missing extra points/field goals, kicking off out of bounds.) Maybe if the game offered anything to help lead you in the right direction this wouldn't be a problem, but it doesn't. Maybe this is just me (but after playing some games online I don't think that's the case) but the kicking game had a major negative impact on how enjoyable the game was.
#2 The passing mechanics were a little slow to respond sometimes. There have been multiple times when I've hit the pass button only to have the quarterback get stuck in a long passing animation, and then get sacked.
I gave this game three stars because the rest of the game play is handled great. I understand how some people could see the other game options limiting (no dynasty mode, limited number off all stars allowed on a team, etc.) but in terms of picking up and playing a game of football 2K8 is pretty fun.

Waited for this title eagerly for years. Unfortunately, it came out to be the biggest game disappointment of the year. I have been a fan of the series since the days of Dreamcast NFL 2K and I have bought and enjoyed every single installment. This is the exception. If you have 2K5 don't even bother to buy this one. 2K5 is way better. I gave it 1 star just because there is no option for Zero stars. I guess we are stuck with mediocre Madden whether we want it or not.
Way to drop the ball 2K sports!!!

My friend in I played this gamelast night. Gameplay was incredibly dissapointing with both of us struggling to get Joe Montana and Randall Cunningham to throw and accurate pass over 20 yards. The superstars are not that great compared to generic players on the field (which their are a lot of) and the game play is choppy. Graphically it could stand improvement as the player's look "placed" on the field and not part of the environment. Finally, the different game play modes are incredibly limited. We made it through half of a game, turned it off and I am off to Gameforce to sell it back today. This game would've been a ripoff at the old 2K prices.
Football Maniac-Better than Madden

First of all let me state that I am a football maniac. I have watched pro football passionately since the early 70s.
When I got this game I was expecting it to be very interesting.
What I got was a game that absolutely Rocks !!!!
This game allows you to pit the best players of all time. But wait there is so much more.
Consider these juicy tidbits
-Walter Paytons scissor kick move
-Barry Sanders patented spin moves
-Roger Craigs High stepping running
So much customization to make the game totally immersive. Especially if you have been a fan for years.
The one thing this game has over Madden is that it is ageless. It will never be outdated since it is historical in nature.
The graphics are wonderful and so is the action.
Imagine watching Jerry Rice (arguably the best in his prime) being covered by Michael Haynes (arguably the best in his prime).
If you are a Cowboy or niner fan this is a must have. They are both represented very well.
I actually drafted a team with Randy White, Too Tall Jones and Harvey Martin and man did they bring the heat on the QB.
The are only 2 things that are very slight negatives. One, everyone is chewing gum. Two, the taunting is a little bit on the corny side.
Online fun galore

Here is what separates this game from Madden, and at least for me made it more enjoyable:
1) Gameplay/physics are much more realistic - You can't just drop back 20 yards and launch an 80 yard bomb. You need to settle your QB in the pocket, and set your feet. Guys running will run at various speeds, and you can't instantaneously stop from a full sprint. Just like in real life, the player will chop step three or four times to bring his body under control. The animation of the players is very well done. Little nuances like this make this game stand heads and shoulders above Madden.
2) All Pro Draft - This system of tiered stars makes the game more interesting because you really have to plan your team makeup. You really have to consider your strengths and weaknesses, and that of your opponents (especially online) when crafting a team. The added abilities that each player has and how they are implemented also brings a lot of variety to the game.
3) Online play - This is wear all Pro Football 2k8 shines. Online play is very challenging, and the online community is huge. The lack of an NFL license is negated because there are so many online leagues to choose from. You still get the experience of playing a 16 game season against other teams, and you always get everyones best. There are no excuses liek "He's playing with the Patriots, there team is always going to be better". Everyone makes their own team to suits there tastes. You also have a player rating system that will take care of singling people out who cheat or do cheesy things online. It works out very well.
4) Menus - No fluff, which I like. Easy to navigate, no load time and they are all easily accessible.
5) Playbook - very well done, with more plays that you ever will need.
6) Tackling system - it takes a bit of getting used to, but once you do, the tackling system using the right stick is a great tool. I must say I like it a lot. It gives you more options in different situations for coralling a pesky runningback or receiver.
7)Cost - At $29.99 (it's probably even lower now), you can't beat this for value.
If you are looking for a challenging football game, and playing against your friends or online is what you enjoy, then definitely check this game out.

Let me start by saying, I am not a Madden Fanboy and go back to 2K football on my beloved Dreamcast. 2K5 football was the best football game ever made, so I had very high hoped for this game bringing me similar joy for my 360. I'm just going to give you all the basics on my review, because I don't feel like giving a thesis style review any longer. The game created on the premise of playing with All-Pro football players, along with either computer generated players, or your own creations. That being said, there are simply too few "legends" and many of them had modest NFL careers. With so many retired or dead former NFL players, why is Brian Bosworth and others like him in the game? So the former great roster isn't that deep, but the names of Rice, Marino, Star, Unitus, Sanders, and Earl Campbell are nice to play with. There are many former greats, but too many not so greats take up too much on the legends of the game rosters. Lets get to the meat: graphics and gameplay.
Graphics are nothing more than my Xbox version in HD. There is a little more detail, but it is nothing like Madden 07. Not even close and this is very disappointing that I'm just playing a 2k5 type game on the 360. Don't get me wrong, everything looks nice but its not next gen at all. Same old 2k5 engine, same voice over and its very very disappointing from the eye candy standpoint.
Gameplay: This game seems so much slow than Madden 07 even on all-pro settings. You have the typical formations from 2k5 with similar controls for both passing and running. Nothing really new here, except certain legends has the skill to steal a signal, so you can blitz or change the play accordingly. Then there is kicking interface to deal with. This is just plain horrible 2K! Maybe kicking and punting is too easy on Madden and on 2K5, but this Mike Tyson....LUDICROUS!!! There is no direction bar or power up bar...its all about timing. YOu simply hold the right stick back and then push it forward to kick as you approach the ball. Easy enough you say? I'll make a 41 yard field goal, but then miss several 25 yard ones. You'll literally kick the ball all over the place, unless you get your timing down. Then your right stick better be centered and not slightly off because it will effect the kick...so frustrating.
The only....only I say...redeeming quality of this game is the team creation mode, and thats it! You can create your team from a list of chosen cities and given team logos. You can then change the colors anyway you want. You can create rosters to your liking and play with them online! I have created 3 teams, and one of them is loaded with Harry Potter created players, another one from my HS football teammates, and the last one is my family members. This is the reason for buying this game, and this is what makes it fun. You can constantly change your rosters to your liking so you aren't stuck with typical preset Madden roster.
In all, 2k really dropped the ball with this game. Its like when I went to see T3 a decade after seeing T2. There was such a huge letdown, though it was still a good movie. This game is that way to me. Its better than NFL Fever for the Xbox, but way less than Madden 07 for the 360. 2K was on the right track with this game, but the $60 price tag isn't justified. I hope they make a new version next year, with updated graphics engine, new announcers, and a better playbook. Thats another thing..the playbooks are basically the same for all teams. This is a good game, but don't buy it new or right now. Wait a few weeks or buy it new. I'm stunned to see 40 copies selling used on Amazon at the time of my review. Oops...i did write alot of mess here, but at least it wasn't in thesis form. The game is good..not great and doesn't justify the Sixty dollar price tag. Buy it used or wait for a sale.
OK, but not quite the "Madden-killer" many were expecting

I have to admit that this game didn't exactly blow me away, but it's still good fun. After you boot the game up, you immediately have to create a team. I am a Cowboys fan from back in the day, so naturally I chose Aikman, Emmitt Smith, and Darryl "The Moose" Johnston. Unfortunately they didn't put Michael Irvin in the game, so I chose Alvin Harper as my WR. I just played an exhibition game to warm up.
The controls are practically identical to 2K5, but they added a few new moves and animations (like the reach tackle) that open things up a bit. The game plays a little more sluggish than 2K5, but it still feels realistic. I have seen some nasty hits and some great gang tackles. I also have noticed a couple of weird animations and glitches (for example, on one play my RB crashed to the ground about 1/2 second before the LB tackled him).
The graphics are just okay. I'll just say that is looks slightly upgraded from 2K5, but not a huge jump. I would definitely say Madden looks better. The customization is great. You have to choose a team name (more selections would have been nice) and stick with their assigned team logo, but then you can customize the entire uniform, including colors for helmets, jerseys, shoes, gloves, elbow pads, etc, etc. My team (Dallas Cougars) definitely looks like the Cowboys.
Another thing to note is that the star players do not necessarily dominate the field. I made some good runs and catches with my generic players. The star players do have some cool animations and abilities, though.
Overall, this is not a huge improvement over 2K5, so some fans might be disappointed. But, this is a good alternative to Madden or NFL-licensed football games. You just have to approach this with an open mind. If you love football and don't really care about playing as current NFL stars, then you'll like this game. The on-field gameplay is solid enough to keep football fans coming back for more. I'll probably hold onto this one just for the nostalgic appeal.
