slow start

popped in the game, nausiating text at first, but the story progressed and got interesting, which in turn didnt just make this a beat-em-up colossal robot game. you get to run around as one of the 3 main characters you choose and use grenades too. and being careful as you fight huge monsters with your huge robot was a plus too, since the city you fight away the monsters in will grant you money. despite the looong texts, and how each city was a complete ghost town even when the monsters werent present, its a good game. worth playing, you have to get through the slow start, it gets pretty good. id play the sequel.

R.A.D. is a very revolutionary game (and everyone knows those are rare nowadays) It is a Mech game with some really cool twists, You don't ride in your mech/robot...
you actually control it by remote control, your always looking for a better perspective to view the action.
you can get on top of buildings or stand in the street and risk getting clipped by a car. the perspective in this game is totally amazing, everything feels giagantic! The buildings loom huge over your puny little man, the giant fighting machines are so large that you can't even see the top of the foot if you are on the ground! Enix actually made me feel like I was in a city that was being torn apart by these monstrous mechs. You play the son of a bankrupt corporate head, you've inherited a large corporation in debt and a little secret... your father spent all his funds on building a large robot to combat the alien invasion he imagined was imminent. well, the joke isn't on your pop, because the aliens just showed up! and they are HUGE!
This game also utilizes an awesome unique control system,
the shoulder buttons R1,R2,L1,L2 operate the legs, the analog sticks contol the arms, the digital D-pad controls torso rotation and pitch. the triangle, square, circle & X buttons operate various weapons and modes of the robot.
you hit select to change control between the human and the robot. There is only two porblems with this game (minor ones) the voice actors are quite possibly the worst... ever.

and there are a few unskipable cut-scenes. I have ABSOLUTELY no doubt that this game will be a rare, sought after classic one day. Robot Alchemic Drive already has a cult following, and I'm a proud member, Enix reminded my of why I love games with this one.
You can choose from 1 of 3 mechs

1. Vavel: is a hand to hand fighter primarily and is the most balanced of the three.

2. Gllang: a heavy mech that uses cannons turns into a tank and is the strongest of the three.

3. Laguiole: a light mech that uses beam weapons and can turn into a jet and is the fastest and most agile of the three.

Many people complain about the voice acting in this game, I however actually enjoy the terrible voice acting, because It reminds me of early anime.

As the official reviewer and several others have pointed out, the biggest drawback of this game is the unavoidable and stupid storyline. You can't skip it no matter how many times you lose and re-start a level, and it adds nothing at all to the gaming experience. You'll actually find yourself wanting to snuff some of the people you're supposed to be saving just because they are so whiny and annoying. (Hello, Nanao, I'm talking to you!) The dialogue is inane and the characters unlikeable. Worst of all, you get interrupted for no useful reason when you are in the middle of the fight. The enemy robot keeps on fighting you during the interruption and sometimes you lose your battle as a result.

Now, if you can stand all that, you will find yourself with an absolutely AWESOME game at its core. The robots are great, stomping around the city with them is so much fun it's worth putting up with the bad parts.

I expect the next version of this game will eliminate the useless "hero" (your choice of several kids, each of whom does nothing to make it more fun or challenging, really just gets in the way) and correct the problems of not being able to disregard the storyline--actually they should just eliminate the storyline and let you fight your robots.

When you're playing two-player it's a lot more fun to just trash the city together before you get down to fighting each other.

Underground Rock'em Sock'em Robots Fun

For those who enjoyed the carnage in Godzilla films or would like to use a remote controlled giant robot. I found the concept of this game unique but unfortunately the graphics and game play does not tap into its true potential. You control one of three giant robots and battle within a city against another giant and that's really it. You play the perspective of the person with the robot controller so you must continually move to roof tops or on the robot itself. The controls are very mechanical, the shoulder buttons control foot movements and the sticks move your arms. As my review suggests fighting looks like Rock'em Sock'em Robots, so don't expect Zone of Enders quality action. Depending on what robot you use you can perform special moves, employ ordinance and/or change into a vehicle. As basic as this game is I expected some detailed work on the robots, moves, or destruction but was disappointed in all three areas. I find the overall game play more humorous than actually entertaining.

Giant Robo Madness! Banzai!

This game has a wonderful of sense of scale as you control your Meganite (whether you choose bipedal, rolling fortress, or flyer type), defending Japan against the evil Volgara aliens. Who are they? What do they want? Who cares? Battles are exactly what they should be for giant robots: loud, noisy, and just sluggish enough to still be exciting with no shortage of crumbling buildings. The viewpoint for the battle being fixed to your tiny human character adds an unusual bit of strategy, ie- finding somewhere safe to stand while the buildings are crashing down around you! Using the sticks to swing your Meganites' arms is a great gimmick, too. Throwing an uppercut or blocking a swing is intuitive and very satisfying. The cityscapes are very large.. you'll never run out of room during a battle, and crowds of screaming people run every which way. The versus mode is good fun, too.

Minus 1 star for the worst voice acting I've ever heard. (really- it's dreadful- should have left it in japanese w/subtitles, Enix!) The story is flat as a pancake, too. But with so much fighting to do, you won't care.

Smashing Goodness

One of the main things about the game's shipping I wish had been done was that it was shipped in the package without a jewel case. However, the game's smashing and crashing robots more than make up for whatever complaints I have against shipping.

The voice acting stinks but that's not why I like it; who wouldn't like to be a giant sized robot, destroying a city: among those cities would be Tokyo itself.

All in all, this was a good game to play.
