I figured I had to throw my 2cents in..I've played DOD for over 2 years, and have devoted timeout just to drive to my bros and play. I've played SOF, BlackhawkDown, CS, and BF1942. Nothing compares to DOD. True, BF42 lets you drive a tank and a plane. If you wanna play Rambo, then buy BF42. If you wanna be a real soldier, crawling on your belly and calling for backup (through your mic, of course) then buy DOD. I've just built a new computer strictly to play DOD with, even though an old pc would work just fine. Low-lag, free servers, and a cool community for "noobies". If you wanna learn more before purchase, check out the dayofdefeatmod website. Listen to the guys talk about "Tactics", and you'll see just how fun this game is. Nothing reminds me of my old Army days like DOD. See you all on the servers!--Hawkeye

At 35 years old, I've played a lot of strategy, first person shooters, PS2 sports games, etc... and I've never found a game as addicting and immersive as Day of Defeat. For those of you who love WWII and video games, you must buy this. I would highly recommend Cable or DSL connection as well as a reasonably powerful pc and set of headsets. And you'll want to download the latest interface patch called STEAM, which greatly enhances the graphics, convenience, and stability of the game. And Day of Defeat offers the best squad level battles out there, bar none. Better than Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, and Battlefield 1942. The maps are much smaller and managable than in Battlefield 1942 and because of this, the battles are much more focused and intense. You will need to work with your team to capture objectives and this is why the game is so much fun. Do buy this game!!!
posibly the best WW II FPS game!

I only have a few things to say about this game because the other reviews have basicly covered everything. I just want to explain "WHY" DoD is a better "GAME" than Medal of Honor. I stress the word 'game' for a reason! I`ve been playing MOH and DoD for some time now and i`ve come to the conclusion that MOH is a alot of fun to play and very addictive and is probably more fun to play than DoD but DoD`s capture the flags mode is what makes it a better "game" than MOH. in DoD their is a tremendous amount of jockying for position on the map that goes on in this game. while MOH is a big time frag fest, DoD is more of a TACTICAL game and it simply shows us that fragging is not the only thing that can make a game fun!
capturing five flags located in different area`s of the map is the goal. its not how many kills you get like in MOH, its the team that captures all the flags wins. and you don`t move the flags, they stay in their position and when one team captures the flag, the flag itself changes color. this is what causes alot of jockying for position on the map and more importanly TEAMWORK! someone has to defend the flag while others go out and try to capture the other flags. like in a real battle, their is an attacker and a defender and its all about capturing land. DoD has this element of war down to a T. and some flags require more than one person on your team to capture it.
if MOH had DoD`s capture the flag mode it would be a MUCH MUCH better game! and I would still be interested in the series but DoD is simply a better "GAME" and in the end, i will only play the game that is more strategic, and thats DoD.
Hands down the finest comparative World War II videogame

In point of fact, what caught my eye about this game was the sound - particularly the weapons; the way they fire, the sound they have, etc., etc. It sounds far more realistic than, shall we say, Battlefield 1942, or Medal of Honor. If you've ever fired one, or at least seen one fired, you would know what I mean, and Day of Defeat captures it magnificently. The MG42 on the Axis, especially, I love how when you fire for too long, it overheats and you can see the steam.
Another facet was the gameplay.
The controls are great, and the mere style impressed me; how if you jump consistently, you run out of breath (same thing happens if you sprint for too long); the fact that it is completely opposite of Counter-Strike in the sense that you can't run faster with your knife unsheathed, because in truth, you still have all your other weapons intact, so running faster with just the knife on primary mode isn't very logical.
The graphics are exceptional, at least enough for my liking, but I'm not one who needs mind-boggling graphics in a game, to where it becomes ridiculous and too far-fetched. Day of Defeat has the perfect structures needed for a good map, and constant "war" atmosphere is known and appreciated. They help you get into the full moment, although that half belongs to the sound, also.
To sum up, if you're the kind of gamer interested in the actual battles fought in World War II, you'll probably find this game as fascinating as I did; however, you might find it dull and boring if you have no interest in war or history, and find games like Halo above superior.
Anyway, I hope this has helped you.
DO NOT BUY THIS GAME

First let me explain why I don't want you to buy this game. Day of Defeat is a wonderful gaming experience. The levels are well done and promote teamwork. Its a historically accurate, and fun game. However, it is a MOD for half-life. That means, if you own half life, you can download this game FOR FREE. You can buy Half-Life for 20 bucks, and get this game as well. Sure, it's nice to have a printed manual and box, but the retail version of this game is abhorrent. You will get disconnected for no reason, and I found myself unable to play Counter-Strike (another great mod for half life) at all. Terrible!
The answer is simple. If you want this game (which I would highly recommend at 5 stars), buy half-life and download it for free. you will also get the awesome half life single player game.
and to those who say that the game is dated: yes, it is. however it doesn't look like complete crap, and most computers will be able to run and enjoy it.

I have most World War 2 PC games, and I've had Day of Defeat for about a year. Each update to it made it slightly better, and im glad to see it go retail and recieve the attention it deserves.
The thing I like about it most and what is the most impressing about DoD, as opposed to a game such as Battlefield 1942 or Medal of Honor, is Valve's perspective on the atmosphere of these World War 2 battles and scenarios. The game achieves realism more than any other, and the sound effects, visuals and overall feeling are possibly the best for World War 2.
With the new DoD, there is now a map to look at, which will help since I tend to get lost in most of its levels. There are alot more weapons, and the restoration of each different player class being assigned to a general task (For ex. the demolition man may have to blast a hole in a wall in order to create an alternate route to enemy headquarters).
Voice communication is also optional in DoD, so you can talk to other plays on your team via a microphone, about team strategy or just to chat. Besides Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat is the most sucessful Half-Life MOD, and now retail game, and has drawn the attention of many players. I advise the purchase of DoD if you have any interests in World War 2 or are looking for a solid, modern warfare, First-person shooter.
Infinitely better than CS, but...

Day of Defeat is very similar to CS. Not in terms of gameplay mechanics, community, and visuals, but in the path they followed.
Anybody playing the game must undoubtedly know that it was originally a mere modification (that's a real understatement) before it went retail. Because of this, it had a smaller community that would allow them to make additions and changes that would otherwise be very risky. Counter-Strike was also originally like this. Sadly, now that anybody can get their hands on it, it has suffered from being turned into something "n00b" friendly. While this is a blessing to any newcomer, it gives DoD some serious hits.
The tension that existed in the "mod" is no longer there. I used to feel that I was an actual soldier in the trenches, but now I feel like I'm just a spectator. I don't recall soldiers having radars that could pick up grenades, rendering the explosives completely useless. I also don't recall them being able to see their teammates names flashing above their heads. Originally, you needed to be careful about who you shot. With the friendly fire almost always on, you needed to ask yourself "Are my teammates in that room? Is that guy in the shadows a friendly? Should I shoot or not?". Now it's just a blind rushing run of shooting anything without a name tag. Also, the ability to pick up any dropped weapon, while more realistic, allows for some pretty cheap tactics such as the ability to mix-and-match your own weapons loadout without any of the inbalances. *Sigh* I do miss DoD being a beta.
But it's not all clouds and rain. Weapons function realistically and the game has so many features that CS should be put to shame and think twice about calling itself a "realistic shooter". The sound effects and the visuals have taken major overhauls since the previous beta and it's simply amazing. I do not joke at all when I say that the game goes head-to-head (and sometimes wins) against games such as Medal of Honor. This is an amazing achievement when you consider that this is all being done on a modified Quake 1 engine.
However, my conclusion is the same as the one I gave for CS. It WAS an excellent mod. It IS NOW a pretty good mod. But in terms of a retail product, it's average. A better idea would be to buy Half-Life and download it along with Counter-Strike and almost any other awesome mod you can find. That way you pay for an excellent SP experience but get an potentially limitless amount of FREE MP games. Also, with Half-Life 2 hitting shelves in September (and the game is looking to be the best ever), you better catch up on the original story so you're as ready as you can be for the second installment.
Better than Ever.

I've been playing Day of Defeat since beta 1.0 and I must say that I am truly impressed with the changes the game has undergone over the last several years. The retail release is the culmination of several years of hard work, as well as beta testing by an "army" of faithful DoD followers (myself included). New maps, new player models, new weapons, and a shiny new polish have once again breathed life into the Half-Life engine. (which was first released in 1998!)
For those of you who can't quite get into Counter-Strike or Team Fortress Classic then try this game out, once you get the hang of it you will not be disappointed!

I've been playing this game on and off (and now on again) since its inception, and it has only gotten better - compare it to ANY of the HL mods out there and you'll know why it qualified (and rightly so) for retail publication. DoD encourages team-play, mic-communication, teamwork in general. Check out Monk's House when you have the chance, DoD'ers...
One of the best online game experiences

From the start DOD encourages team based play. Yes, it uses the old half life engine, which isn't that bad, come on!! but enables players with older PC's to run it at higher resolutions so enabling easier targeting of enemies. While the scenery may be graphically dated, the actual game physics are spot on. The sound of bullets whizzing past, hitting different surfaces and the tracer fire eminating from some distant location is completely mesmerising. Seeing your team mates being struck down by enemy gunfire, their helmets spinning off and their bodies slowly falling into a crumpled heap is a sight to behold.
What DOD delivers is solid, team based, gameplay that anyone with a broadband connection can easily enjoy. The maps aren't big but this keeps the fighting tight and tense. I've played Battlefield 1942, yeah, visually, it's great but there is a real sense of being lost in some vast battlefield with bullets hitting you from nowhere. In DOD, there are so many occasions when you and your team mates are stuck in a corner with grenades and machine gun fire forcing you back. One of you has to make a decision and the result can either be an immense failure where all of you are massacred in a whirlwind of blood and bullets or sublime victory where you all charge the enemy and they flee before your onslaught. Again, I will repeat, DOD really makes players work as a team, more than any other online game I have played. Medal of Honour for example, a fine game, still has the stupid Quake 3 idiots running around shooting all and sundry. It has 'Free for all' maps for goodness sake! These just encourage pointless 'shoot to score' mentality and I feel is holding the online gaming scene back.
Ignore the Counter Strike cynics, Valve know what they are doing and DOD delivers big time!
