No energy tanks, fancy gadgets, spike invulnerability when hit, and two less robot masters than most games in the series make this debut the bad kind of hard. The stages and bosses are EXTREMELY hard without the right equipment. The next one, Mega Man 2, is where greatness would first be reached.

The first in an incredible video game series

The original Mega Man, while rough around the edges, is still a classic in every way. I know many that didn't like it as much as, say, Mega Mans 2 or 4, but you have to realize that this game (with no passwords, energy tanks, rush, etc.) was made back in the day when Nintendo games kicked your [...] and forced you to love them. I still play this every now and then mainly because it's very challenging and still has some replay value to it. Mega Man 2 proved to be easier and was the one that made Mega Man a household name. Rough, hard, but still a great game. Besides, it began the series, so it should be given good credit!

Great start to the series

Today, there are so many Mega Man games (too many, in fact) that it's hard to remember that the first game was a bomb in America. Of course, we can thank Capcom's cover art for that. The game, while decidedly lacking in the "conviences" of later games (energy tanks, passwords, sliding, Rush, etc.), has a definite charm to it. The original six robot masters are hard (although rendered fairly easy thanks to the pause cheat), but most of their weapons are extremely powerful-especially Elec Man's dreaded Thunder Beam. The short Wily stages are also not as good as in future games, but the first of many Mega Man clones, plus the One-Eyed Rock Monster, make for a game that's certainly worthy of being called a classic.

The one that started it all

Mega Man(1987). Part one of a nine game series.

For the most part, NES action platform games were very entertaining, but often they lacked variety and ways to reward the player. Most games (with the exception of RPG and Adventure games) had you play as a character who is more or less the same at the end as they were when you started. In 1987, Capcom stepped in and came up with an interesting idea: "What if you could defeat a boss and steal their weapon to use for the rest of the game?" Thus, the Mega Man series was born. Here's the lowdown on the first legendary game:

PROS:

-While the story isn't exactly incredible, this being the first game, it is actually pulled off well. Two scientists, Dr. Light and Dr. Wily, created six mining robots which specialized in specific environments. However, Dr. Wily became jealous of Dr. Light's praise and so he reprogrammed these six robots to do his own evil bidding. Secretly, Dr. Light had created two household robots, Rock and Roll. Rock decides to have Dr. Light fit him with armor and a plasma gun in order to stop Dr. Wily and the six corrupted Mining bots, thus turning Rock into Mega Man.
-Even though there are only six bosses, they are each very unique and offer a variety of weapons. For instance, Cutman throws his scissors out in a boomerang-like fashion, while Gutsman picks up boulders and hurls them. Also, THE BOSSES ARE NICE AND TOUGH. Elecman is particularly nasty.
-Mega Man's controls are nice and simple. He may not have a lot of abilities in this game, but the "jump/run/shoot" set of controls are all he really needs here.
-POSSIBLY THE MOST DIFFICULT ENTRY IN THE SERIES. Yes, this game will really test your gaming abilities to the limit, as there are no E-tanks and passwords to be found here. I seem to notice that a lot of people complain about the lack of passwords. Please. Mega Man games are generally pretty short, so IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE PATIENCE TO SIT THROUGH AN ENTIRE MEGA MAN GAME, THEN YOU SHOULDN'T EVEN BOTHER PLAYING THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE. I never use passwords.
-GREAT VARIETY OF LEVEL DESIGNS AND ENEMIES TO FIGHT. The levels aren't too terribly long, but not brief either. Likewise, the enemies will definitely keep the player busy enough to make it challenging, but not too frustrating (except for maybe the final levels).
-The graphics are nice for the era, and there is very little if any slowdown present. The sprites of Mega Man and the bosses are all equal size, not like later entries in which the bosses dwarf the poor blue guy.
-This might be cheating, but I LIKE THE PAUSE CHEAT THAT YOU CAN USE TO HELP YOU WITH SOME BOSSES. I won't tell you how to use it. Find out yourselves.
-Though the sound effects are good, IT'S THE MUSIC THAT WILL REALLY CATCH YOUR ATTENTION. Most of the tunes are done well, my favorites being Iceman and Elecman's themes in particular.
There are no bad tunes to be found here.

CONS:

-Even though this is the first game, I THOUGHT THAT THE MAGNET BEAM GENERATOR ABILITY WAS LACKING. Whenever you're standing on one and it disappears, you not only fall, but you DIVE STRAIGHT DOWN AS FAST AS A BULLET! It's the only extra ability besides the boss weapons, and it seemed like a good idea, but not quite there in its execution.
-THERE ARE NO E-TANKS YET. This isn't that big of a deal because this makes the game more challenging, but there a few areas (the later levels in particular) in which you'll really wish you had them.
-SPIKES ARE THE DEVIL IN THIS GAME!! Not because they can kill you in one hit, but because they can kill you while you're recovering from an attack. It might make traversing levels harder, but I find this to be annoying. Thankfully, Capcom fixed this in the next game.
-Though the main character is in fact Mega Man, by looking at the box cover, you'd think otherwise.
-What's up with the point system? You go around collecting little orange and red balls throughout the levels which are supposed to increase your score at the end of each level, but THE POINTS NEVER EARN YOU LIVES OR ANYTHING. Thankfully, this is the only game to include points.

Overall, this is a great game even though there are a few rough spots here and there. Besides, it laid the official groundwork for the rest of the series, and EVERYONE HAS TO AT LEAST APPRECIATE THAT. It's not my favorite MM game, but it is certainly not bad at all. In fact, this was the last of the NES MM games I played. 4 stars overall. If you want a game which has a great old-school feel, but will not let you down on the challenge factor, then the first MM game is the right place to come to. Get equipped with bubble lead and go find a copy!

Before appearing in hundreds of sequels and spin-offs, Mega Man made his first appearance on the NES over 15 years ago. Coming out at a time where the platforming genre was booming due to the success of Super Mario Brothers, Mega Man had it's share of qualities that made it stand out from the rest. The graphics were colorful and detailed, the music was cool, and the gameplay was top notch. The game also gave the player a choice as to which stage they wanted to play. Each of the bosses had their own distinct world which included environments, enemies, and traps unique to that world. But what really made this game a standout from the genre was the ability to gain a boss's ability after defeating them. For instance, beating Cut Man would give you the ability to throw scissor-like boomerangs, while defeating Elec Man would give you the power to shoot electric beams in 3 different directions. The way you used your accquired powers also brought a strategic element to the game, for using a particular weapon against a boss could kill them with a few hits. For example, Fire Man was weak against the Ice Slasher and Guts Man could be defeated with a few hits from the Hyper Bomb. The storyline in the game is basically the same in later Mega Man sequels; stop Dr. Wily and his robots from taking over the world. Although this is the only Mega Man game to feature just 6 bosses instead of the standard 8, it is still a tough game to beat. In fact, it might be the hardest game in the series. There are no energy tanks to collect so you will have a hard time in some areas, especially Dr. Wily's castle. There is also no password feature so be prepared to beat this game in one sitting. And while the control is good for the most part, Mega Man has a tendency to slide just a little bit before coming to a stop, but it can be enough to throw you off balance at times. Overall a good beginning for the Mega Man series, but Mega Man II and III are much better games due to better graphics and sound, more bosses to face, and the inclusion of password features.

Different, yet good

This game differed from most of the other games (except number 2) in that it was a fighting style game, not a platformer. You could charge, but Rush was not in this game. The health monitor allowed you to take very little hits, but the bosses had no invicibility period (BIG flaw). Although this would have made the game harder, that would just have made it challenging to the point of absolute impossibility. There are 3 characters in this game: megaman, who you probably know about; Bass, a Wily robot gone rogue; and Protoman, the HIGHLY underused and incredibly cool prototype.

Childhood memories

I was in the 6th grade when I first played Megaman (in 1988). This one was different from most games of the time for two reasons: A) You could pick which stage to go to! and B)you were able to obtain your opponent's weapons! Those two factors more than any others are what made megaman a winner.

The premise:

Dr. Wright's partner (in the other games he's known as Dr. Light) Dr. Wily goes mad, steals the industrial robots they created together, attempts to reprogram "Rock" who resists programming and left behind to be found by Dr. Wright. "Rock" volunteers to be transformed from (I think he was a butler or something) into a fighting robot: Megaman, thus Megaman begins his very, very, very, very, very loooooooooooooooong journey to bring Dr. Wily to justice.

Game play:

For its time, the original megaman had superb game play. The ability to selct which stage you wanted to tackle, the ability to use the vanquished robot masters weapons and indeed, the ability to go back to the stage you defeated and defeat the robot master again all contributed to the superb game play of megaman. These factors actually make it superior to megaman 2 and 3 where you cannot return to any previosuly beaten stage. Even in subsequen megamans where you can return to beaten stages, you cannot refight the vanquished robot masters.

Also, you can pause this one with the select button, which is something of a trick because you can defeat difficult enemies by pausing and unpausing repeatedly. Unfortunately, when you go to the subscreen, or unpause when you're on a latter, megaman lets go (well, he doesn't just let go, he shoots down a couple of rungs).

Another thing pertaining to gameplay that's different about this one is the scoreboard. You collect points for defeating enemies. The amount of points set for defeating robot masters is generated randomly, while the price on Dr. Wily's head is set squarely at 200000 points. It's a nice touch that's lost on the later games.

Pluses:
-First Megaman game.
-Good play control.
-The special weapons are cool.
-The music is good.

Minuses:
-No save or password feature.
-Replay value limited.
-Megaman likes to fall off of latters in this one (for example, when unpausing the game or selecting a special weapon from the subscreen).
-Graphics by todays standards are not so good (but at the time were tops).

Conclusions:

A good game. Probably worth a look if you're curious about where it started. The rock monster (of which incarnations are found in Megaman 3, 8 and X5) is extremely difficult in this installment. They didn't go over the top with this one. Later with all of the skull castles and castles in general got to be too much. In this one you battle your way through 'monsteropolis'. Better than megaman 2.

The beginning of the Mega Man legacy

Just as 1987 was drawing to a close, the first Mega Man game, for the classic eight-bit Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), arrived in stores. Although the game wasn't too well-known at first, it quickly grew in popularity and would eventually become the Capcom game that would spawn more sequels than any other. How does the first entry in this now legendary series measure up? Read on and find out.

PROS:
-THESE WERE SOME OF THE FINEST GRAPHICS ON THE NES. Glitching and slow-down, two huge problems on the NES, are kept to a minimum here. Even late NES games suffered from these problems a very good deal, but the Mega Man series hasn't ever really had to worry about them.
-YOU CHOOSE THE ORDER IN WHICH YOU WISH TO DO THE STAGES. Sure, we take this for granted nowadays, but back in the day, this feature was revolutionary. This can devise players to come up with their own strategies for victory.
-WHEN YOU DEFEAT A ROBOT LEADER, YOU GET HIS WEAPON! Once again, this is another feature that we now tend to take for granted, but back then it was spectacular. Every Robot Leader is vulnerable to the attack of another Robot Leader, so finding the right order to play through the stages in is a challenge in its own right.
-IT'S THE MOST CHALLENGING GAME IN THE SERIES. In a number of ways, this game will challenge gamers more than any other entry in the franchise will. It won't be long before you agree that this is a tough game. But if you WANT a challenge, you can't go wrong!
-IT'S THE ONLY MEGA MAN GAME YOU CAN PAUSE WITHOUT BRINGING UP A SUBSCREEN MENU! This may not sound like something very special, but if you want to get good screenshots, you won't take this feature for granted!

CONS:
-THE GAME LACKS MANY THINGS THAT MAKES LATER GAMES GREAT. For example, the slide, Mega Buster charging, Rush, Eddy/Flip Top, Beat, and Proto Man aren't here. Likewise, there are no passwords! This means you must start the game over every time you play it. And, of course, there are no energy tanks, and when you're hit and temporarily invulnerable, you are NOT immune to spikes in this game! Of course, if you're looking for a good challenge, you may actually LIKE the game because of the lack of these features.
-WHAT'S THE DEAL WITH THE POINTS? This is the only traditional-style Mega Man game that keeps score, but the points aren't good for anything. They don't get you extra lives, new items, or anything at all! If you're gonna include a point system in a game, include it for a reason!
-THE ONLY SPECIAL ITEM OTHER THAN THE ROBOT LEADER WEAPONS IS THE MAGNET BEAM, WHICH ISN'T TOO COOL. The Magnet Beam is a device you can use to create platforms. However, this was executed poorly. If a platform disappears from beneath you, you don't just fall - you dive downward at the speed of light! Also, you need the item to complete the first area of the final stage, but you don't actually get it from a Robot Leader (it's hidden in a stage), so if you get to Wily's place and make it to the area where you need it and don't have it, you're screwed. You'll have to kill yourself, find it, and come back.
-THE STORYLINE IS SEVERELY LACKING. You're not going to get ANY of the story unless you read the instruction manual. And honestly, when it comes to these older games, who bothers reading them? Even after you beat the game, you don't really get much of a "conclusion" story.
-WHILE GLITCHES IN THIS GAME ARE FEW AND FAR BETWEEN, THERE IS ONE THAT CAN HURT YOU. If you pause the game, Mega Man "faint warps", which causes him to fall off of ladders. This gets really annoying, especially on long ladder climbs. However, there is actually a way to use this glitch to your advantage - but I'm not going to reveal that here - visit a fan site if you want that info.

OVERALL:
Overall this was a good first entry in a now classic video game series. Sure, it was still a bit rough around the edges, but for the most part it was a good game, through and through. However, it's NOT one of the better games in the series. If you're an NES owner, I recommend starting with Mega Man 2 or 3 - they're a bit more "beginner friendly." But if you want to be challenged and you're a fan of the series, don't hesitate to pick this one up!

The game when it all started

This Game is great, and I honestley dont understand why some dont like it(to each their own I guess). Yes is difficult, but thats why its so good. In this game there is no E box, no passwords and you have to take all the men all over again when u turn it off but the game is so fun to play that it doesnt matter to me.

The Graphic isnt that good either compares to the 2. one but still much better then other games in that time(Super Mario 1 for example nuff said LOL)

I belive all Mega Man games from 1-4 deserves 5 stars, back in the days Mega Man was the only thing I thought about (In 91). After Mega Man 4 I think it seriously went down the hill.

Fave part is Dr.Willys world which is fun and difficult at the same time. Interesting is in the 3. level u are fighting against yourself ! Its difficult to master, I actually only did it 2 or 3 times since I bought it(and later lost, then downloaded emulators on my computer for it). Last time I went through the game was in his year and it was just as fun as back in the day.
