Welcome to street fighter in 3-D, Great concept right? On the plus side the game is done fairly well, balanced, decent animation & graphics.New characters are nowhere near as memoriable as the older Street Fighters, many are just flat out ripoffs... (Pullim is basically Cammy but black & dressed like a genie)1/2 the cast plays like Ryu. 1/2! Allen, Akuma, Sakura, Ken, Evil Ryu, Kairi,Shin Akuma... Enough is enough. Still it is worth a rent if you like Street Fighter.

This installment of Street Fighter i believe to be one of the best.
What makes it special is the ability to perform long combos that start with simple moves. In the beginning this may seem difficult but the game provides a fun and addictive practice mode that walks you through these combos with each character.
Whats so nice about this practice mode is that it saves your progress and unlocks the best characters in the game. Once Evil Ryu and Super M.Bison are unlocked you would have done enough challenges to be proficient with every character and be able to smash computer and opponent alike.
This is just a fun and great all around set up For the street fighter series.
Lopsided character list, average gameplay.

One of the weakest entries ever developed for the legendary Street Fighter series, EX 3D isn't actually really 3D -- though camera angles change (which is one of the most annoying features of 3D anyway), you can't move sideways (towards/away from player). Moves are sluggish and slow, paling drastically in comparison with the smooth split-second response of Street Fighter III (somehow this excellent game still shies from home systems, years after its release). Most grievously, there are so many similar characters in the "uppercut brothers" tradition that it becomes very tedious: Kiiri, Allen, Ken, Ryu, Akuma -- points off for lack of creativity.
Graphics are okay and the new characters, especially Blair and C. Jack, can be fun to learn and play. But I'd say this game is much less inviting, so that even I, a longtime player of the SF series, find very little incentive to go back to it, playing it only sporadically as a novelty.
Not the best SF game i've played...

When I first rented it, I thought it would kick butt like Alpha 3. Boy was i wrong. Not only do the graphics stink, But they've introduced a NEW Ryu clone, Allen. Allen sounds like Elmer Fudd, and has no personality. Buy or rent? Rent first, then IF you like it, buy.
A fighting game that makes you think just as much as chess

That's right you heard it folks. I've been playing this game on and off for years since it's arcade appearance, and I beat this game down in the arcade. I have to say it's the most entertaining 3d fighter out there (street fighter alpha 3 is it's equal but in different ways). This game makes you form strategies that have to be decided upon and changed within a split second. Although it being a slower paced game than other SF, the extra time allots you space to form countermeasures against your foe. Like I said before, this game is more like intense chess than a fighting game. The controls are customizable and intuitive. You don't want a novel to tell you how to play a game and this beats the rest with replayability up the ying yang. Due to unfortunate circumstances I'm about to buy another copy, (for the third time mind you). You want a great fighting game that doesn't lose its touch, this is it.
Praise for Capcom^_^

Street Fighter EX Plus Alpha is an update of the original arcade game, Street Fighter EX, which had weaker graphics, fewer characters, and of course no extras, being an arcade game. The arcade version of this game shared the same problem, but the PS version is probably one of the more addictive fighting games I've played. At first glance the game is simple and reasonably easy to defeat on normal difficulty level. The plot thickens, though, when the practice mode (where I finally learned how to do a screwdriver) is taken into account, along with the multitude of characters and hidden bosses. Admittedly, some of the new characters are pretty lame, but they all have distinct fighting techniques, timing and drawbacks. And of course, some of them are wicked cool (Doctrine Dark and Garuda come to mind). For the record, this game probably has the best rendition of M. Bison I've ever seen (he appears and sounds just the right mix of powerful and disdainful. His kick throw is still one of my favorite impossible video game throw techniques=)). Then, there's the music; I've spent many hours just listening to the inspired soundtrack. Synthesizer-dominated or not, something about it just made it stand out from the crowd (Guile's music is probably my favorite). That's not even getting into the Meteor combos, combo chaining, throw system (with specific characters), and the missions used in the training mode to teach basic and advanced Street Fighter skills. The only sore point is the graphics. This game is old, old, old! I think it came out in the late 90s, and there have since been two graphically superior sequels. Somehow, the gameplay was never the same. Ex2 took the combo thing a little too far, and three...well, let's just say that game is not my cup of tea. This is a great older game, if you can withstand the graphics, but I suspect I won't mind them too much.Props to Arika for trying something different! Especially now that Capcom has canceled the 3d Capcom Fighting All Stars...and I was so looking forward to see what they would do with Strider! Cheers...=)

When the first Street Fighter 2 was released on Super Nintendo almost 10 years ago, my roommate and I played it about 8 or 9 hours per day for close to a month! Street Fighter Alpha EX has the SAME charm and excitement as that first release--simple to learn (even beginning gamers can get the hang of it quickly) but complex enough to keep your interest for months. I've always liked the style of movement in the Street Fighter series and this version (although recreated in a 3D environment) keeps the same "feel." Graphically, it looks very much like the original except 3D. The programmers did an excellent job of rendering characters and backgrounds that hold the original's vibe. The only negative thing I could say about the game is that the 3D rendering engine is a little bit behind the times when compared to some of the most recent 3D fighting games... And I wish that there was a straight forward method to selecting the background (arena) without using cheats. Overall, it is probably the funnest fighting game I've bought this year (1999). Hats off to Capcom for updating a classic without ruining it!
A great addition to the SF library

This version of SF never got the same treatment as the other ones. Possibly because of its very mediocre sequels. This uses the 3D formula and was pretty good for its time. It also uses the Alpha power bar concept for super moves. The controls are the basic SF format and they're pretty fluid.
Old characters have returned with the addition of some new ones. Akuma & Evil Ryu are also playable. The stages are pretty good with some good music to them. There's also a practice mode and thats pretty well done.
This is one of the great SF titles out there. I don't think it really compares to the Alpha series. Still its worth owning. Especially if your a SF fan.
