A PlayStation Signature Classic

You know, at first when I first started the game and I was trying to learn it as much as possible (and being shot down a lot) I thought to myself that this thing is way too hard as you cannot save your progress at any time during the game. All you save are essentially the game info when you have completed it and the scores you racked up until all the continues have been used up. Speaking of which, you have 3 lives and 10 continues giving you a grand total of 30 lives. Now you see this and say "Oh, should be a piece o' cake"...not so fast.

The story goes that you are a daredevil of some sort who is from the moon. You're sent on a one man suicide mission to right whatever wrong is going on down on Earth. This is where not being able to save comes in. It's a suicide mission, meaning you essentially have one shot at it to take care of things, or else you start over. You are given three distinct ships in which to choose from that has different weapon styles associated with them. For firepower, you have a mix of a regular machine type gun that Squaresoft calls the manipulator and a host of other special weapons like the Vulcan machine gun, the cannon, or Riot, which is an electrical charge type of gun. When you are playing, shots come from everywhere. The deeper you go into the game, the more hectic it gets. If you play it on a PS1, you'll notice that when there is a lot going on in the game, the machine slows down the action on the screen. On a PS3, this problem is absolutely eliminated. At any rate, when the action picks up your reflexes and quick decision making skills will be put to the test. Especially when you fight the bosses.

Each stage has two bosses. A mini-boss and the real deal. At the onset, the bosses are not too tough, but as you go along Square makes things a little more challenging. Seriously, if you can beat this game the first time through, you are a video game pro. This thing gets hard, real hard from what I remember. It stinks when you get far into the game only to run out of continues and have to start over again. But I suppose this method forces you to bring your 'A' game because towards the end is where it gets hairy. Speaking of which, what would a classic video game be without a little bit of a twist to go with it?...play it, and you'll see what I am talking about. A video game classic not to be missed.

This is a fantastic game all around. from gameplay to graphics (at the time anyhow). Even one of the very best game soundtracks ive ever heard. i still play it to this day. this game has an unreal amount of unlockables, and hidden paths. Getting everything can be insanely challenging, but the standard player should be able to at least get all weapons on the normal planes. id recommend this game to people who like contra and those raiden or 1942 games. well worth the $45 dollars thats being charged for it now. i own a copy and i would NEVER sell it!

I've been playing this game for years. I bought it when it was sold for 20 bucks as a Playstation classic and i'm not the least suprised it's price has gone back up. This is probably the best game ever created. My only gripe is that i play this game with my Playstation 2, and as with all Playstation one games, you can't save the darn thing on PS2...or can you...?

A Shooter For Advanced Gamers!

I've owned this game just as long as I have owned a Playstation and this one ain't ever gonna be replaced. Einhander is one of your more advanced shooters, therefore is not really geared for much fun. In short it is quite a challenge. Honestly, if you are good at shooters, it would take you about 3-5 plays for each level to master each one of them. Upon that, the Boss at the end of each level are extremely difficult to conquer. There is no single way of defeating them. To get technical, there is more than one way to beat each leader and depending on how you do so, you achieve higher scores and obtain free men ( a 1up ).

I disagree with the editorial reviews as far as the graphics go. They describe the graphics as sub par. But I think they are amazing for the standard PS1 console. Squaresoft achieves a 2D/3D world in Einhander. The explosions and the all around graphics of the game are phenomenal. The character design of the end level Bosses and Leaders are surreal. This shooter lacks nothing. Its a challenge at first but after a few plays, this game becomes more fun and addicting. To keep this game spinning, the creators also included secret weapons and fighter ships you can obtain by taking on the extra challenge in difficulty settings and skill.

To get down to the nitty gritty. This isn't a title you would get for your 6 year old nephew or just anyone. This title definately would appeal to your more advanced gamer. And as far as replay value and quality gaming - this game still spins in my Playstation.

The Second Greatest Game Ever.

Why is "Einhander" the second greatest game ever made for any system? It has some of the best game-play, depth, sound FX, fun-factor, presentation and replay value. For more detail, please see my review of "F-Zero GX" where I compare and contrast these two amazing games with some other great console games.

You would honestly think that any game made by Square, in the era right after they relesed Final Fantasy Seven would have gotten more recognition than this game did, but unfortunately it did not, easily becoming an underground type sensation that few could argue, is not only one of the classic shoot-em-ups on the Playstation, but one of the best Side scrolling shooters of all time. Taking place in the all too distant future, we find ourselves jumping into the helm of three vastly different ships, which upon receiving different weapons, mount themselves on your ship in different ways depending upon which ship you have chosen. Each level is vastly different from the next, and each boss requires a methodical and increasing harder approach to defeat it, learning the patterns and timings of each boss is a must if you even want to get past the third level. With secrets galore and 2 unlockable ships (if memory serves me correct), the game is loaded to the rims with extras that will keep you glued to your tv for hours, wondering how in the hell this game is so addicting. Well in one sense the exceedingly difficult gameplay, drives you to want to see what the next level has to offer, while the actual process of figuring out the best route through each stage, while acquiring the best weapons to be used against each boss comes down to a science, and literally you have to become "One" with the controller, and basically let your senses take over, as this is probably right up there with Contra: Shattered Soldiers in terms of overall difficulty. But let me tell you the second you step foot into the final stage in the midst of an all out war against you, and only you, this game turns the world on you as you battle in space and fight off against one of the hugest RoboTech inspired bosses ever. Phenomenal music accompanies this blissful experience, as the pounding techno music even made me import the soundtrack from Japan, as I just could not get enough of the game and its music. It is unfortanate that the game never really made the waves it should have stateside, as I'm sure Square's reluctant to release a sequel, due to the games lackluster sales, but then again it just moves it right up there with Radiant Silvergun (probably THE best shooter of all time), in terms of one of those games you mention to someone, and there either like "What game?" or "Oh my friggin' God that game is so amazing." Praobably one of the best games you've never heard about or will get a chance to play, good luck finding it, and even greater luck trying to master it and beat it. Impeccable.

I'm 30 and miss the days of glory when arcade shooters ruled the world. This game seduces you with its kick butt graphics and outstanding game play. It is all you could every want from a shooter, except 2 player option, I would never sell my copy to anyone and will probably play this game when I'm 60. If you like Raiden, you will adore this game.

Einhander is the most impressive game in its class. Awesome graphics coupled with a fantastic array of weapons, arcade style handling, and outstanding, challenging objectives make it THE first choice for anyone interested in aerial combat.

The Einhander ship is a blue, jet-propelled weapons-handler that looks similar to a butterfly. The reason it's called Einhander? It has gunpods. "Einhander" in German means "one hand." In addition to its mounted machine gun, it has gunpods capable of taking on up to three special weapons. A few of these: Wasp, a compact and effective guided-missile launcher, Vulcan, a gatling gun capable of extreme rates of projectile discharge, and a devestating cannon.

This is a game you have to see for yourself. Unfortunately, I haven't seen it at any local video stores, but you can trust my words: This game is worth it. Buy it, borrow it, whatever. Give this game a try.

This game is beautiful!

I had played the demo of Einhander before I bought it, and was hooked from the start. The battles with the bosses are incredible, and when you're going through them the first time, they're rather unpredictable (even reading an FAQ didn't totally prepare me for what I was getting into!) I love the graphics and the music (I highly recommend hunting down the soundtrack, composed by Kenichiro Fukui.) I'm so glad I bought this game (wish it was still available so others can have the chance to play it) and I'm not giving up my copy for anything!
